That problem is the gem that Christian Scott is going to throw tonight

What may not be a problem is Hunter Brown. In his last 21.1 innings he has walked 15 batters and the Astros have lost the last for that he has started

The pitching matchups this weekend are

8/28 Hunter Brown 3-3 3.51 1.33 vs Christian Scott 4-3 3.73 1.32

8/29 Christian Javier 1-4 6.47 1.66 vs Nolan McLean 9-8 3.21 1.14

8/30 Brian Pecko 0-0 7.88 1.88 vs Zack Thornton 3-4 3.88 1.15

Yordan Alvarez is the big power threat with 36 homers .319 36 91 1.044

The Astros beat the Yanks 5-1 yesterday. On any given day the Astros may or may not be in playoff position. That's the current state of the American League 

After firing the GM and assuming the role himself the owner Crane has had hired Brent Strom as a pitching consultant for the balance of the season

Veteran 1B Christian Walker has slumped to the tune of 6 hits in his last 50 at bats. Naturally his bat woke up last night with a homer in the Bronx. Hopefully this doesn't wake him up to do damage this weekend

Even Jose Altuve is effectively an average hitter right now: 705 OPS / 98 OPS+ after averaging 839 / 113 over the five full post-Covid seasons. Maybe it's just a down year or maybe the start of the big decline which certainly wouldn't be surprising seeing as how he turned 36 a few months back.

He got what was effectively an Astro-for-life contract a few years back*. He's there for big money next season then at a reduced rate for both 2028 & '29. Then I guess if he wants to seek a new deal on the cusp of turning 40 when he'll be a FA in the winter of '29-'30 then go for it dude.

 

 

* Note to Met fans: THIS is what a retired number player should look like. Not half-careers with a team, not quarter careers, not 'made a few AS teams'

Jose Altuve has had a terrific career, but I would disagree that this is the "start" of the decline, but with is numbers gradually decreasing each year since 2022, I would say his decline has not only been at work for four years, but has been almost elegant in its slope.

Also, he gives me the icks because I can't see him without thinking of the facepalming cracks the president made when he had the Astros to The White House.

They are playing - so power outage for the coverage but power working for the stadium itself.

 

TOP 1st: Jeremy Pena - GO 4-3; Yordan Alvarez - GO 4-3; Isaac Paredes - BB; Jose Altuve - Single (1st & 2nd); Daulton Varsho - GO/FC (6-4)

Lots of foul balls so far in the inning so lots of pitches (24 is the final count)

Just luck.  The Mets and Yankees very rarely play at home at the same time, so an opponent getting to play both back-to-back is rare.

Do you actually think a majority of Mets fans are in favor of the rash of number retirements lately?  That sure seemed to be an ownership-driven decision.

The Mets have seen several relay throws against them this season bizarrely thrown into some absolute nowhere region between third and home.

I'm starting to think the Mets have deployed some sort of disorienting device against relaying opposition infielders.

Sheebus.  If this is their defense, the Mets have to exploit it and put pressure on them all weekend.

I have no idea if there's a majority for it or not. Certainly there are a number of fans who like all the # retirements (and want more) including some here.

Met runners/coaches have picked a couple of good spots to run and been rewarded with bad awful throws. One produced a run, another could have set up a run until the GiDP monster showed up. Both runners c/should have been out but were easily safe.
