Wasn't pretty, but we'll take it.

God, I hate this ghost runner bullshit.

That game went a nearly full 3-1/2 hours (3:27). Even for an 11 inning game that's a long one in this new era.

Of course in the old days they would have been starting extras at about the 3:27 mark.

ghost runner bullshit.

Wasn't this peddled originally as temporary? And now they've made it permanent?

Or was it introduced as "Now and forevermore you're stuck with this insultingly dumb shit"? I forget.

For this team to somehow scuffle around this badly and still have a 3-3 road trip to start the year, well, that's a minor miracle.

It was peddled as temporary but I suspect that, within the walls of their Park Avenue offices, it was always intended to be permanent.

Covid just gave them an excuse to introduce it for the short 2020 season.

In '21 they declared it to be still 'necessary' because the virus might re-surge and there were still travel restrictions.

Then in '22 they had a shortened spring training due to labor negotiations so of course they had to use it again.

By '23 they sort of off-handedly said it was permanent because 'The Fans Love It'!

Thanks for the weird history lesson. This is some kind of three card monte scam. They have no plausible rationale for keeping it at this point just some general notion of 'popularity' that runs contrary to every fan I know.

I record games and fast forward through commercials so I had to rewind when I saw Soto standing on second-- WTF he just made the last out!!

Even with the 'Three Batter' rule eliminating LOOGYs and other one batter and fly relievers, teams still find themselves with (at least) eight man bullpens and even then have to resort to frequent rotations to and from AAA just to maintain a healthy and not-overworked crew from week to week. And those frequent rotations got capped last year so those up-and-down movements are harder now.

So I suspect the clown-car extra inning rule is all about pitching and was an action driven by GMs*. Covid gave them the opening to implement it and claims of 'fan approval' gave them the cover to keep it. With almost all EI games being settled by the 10th or 11th (and I think you can count on one hand the number of games that have gone past 12 innings under this rule) it looks like there's about 20 innings/year on average that no longer have to be pitched. That's a workload for around half a reliever.

I think the wear on pitchers arms is a secondary concern to the desire to not have to keep the ballpark operating and the power on indefinitely for the odd marathon game.

This. Owners have secretly hated extra innings since time immemorial. They've already gotten most of your money by the sixth or seventh inning and getting your money is what they mostly care about. That's what business is: getting as much of your money while giving you as little as possible in return. There's only so many hot dogs a body can eat, even if the game goes into extras. And extra innings means keeping the lights on longer and paying workers overtime. It's about the money and everything else is a distraction. What wear and tear on pitchers? Today, it's a minor miracle when a starter takes the mound for the sixth inning.
