metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2025 Posted February 13, 2025 he's not entirely wrong...according to fangraphs' depth charts feature, the mets are projected to have the 2nd best WAR from their batters in the majors at 33.3 WAR, behind only the Os at 33.4. The dodgers are projected for 33.0 WAR in 3rd, while the yankees (31.7) and braves (31.4) round out the top five. granted that includes defense. if we look instead to the projected standings page, the mets are projected to score 4.73 runs per game, good for third, behind the dodgers at 4.90 and the braves at 4.86. the yankees (4.68) and phillies (4.65) round out this particular top five. here, though, the projections include any park effects, as well as projected opponent strength.so, it's certainly not an unreasonable proclamation. especially if you think, as i do, that pete is going to have a terrific year and exceed his projections.

Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2025 Posted February 13, 2025 Alonso already underperformed in a walk year so I'm not sure why this year would be any better with him a year older.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2025 Posted February 13, 2025 Alvarez had a rough season also but of course I agree with him!!
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2025 Posted February 13, 2025 Hey Frankie ... how 'bout a bit less yapping, some more hitting, and maybe calm down a bit on the tattoos and designer eye black!Hit first, style later. Mm'Kay?
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2025 Posted February 14, 2025 It looks like Francisco Alvarez drastically changed his swing over the winter. He's incorporated a much bigger stride. Video and Mendy's comments here:https://nypost.com/video/francisco-alvarez-improves-rhythm-with-renovated-swing/https://nypost.com/video/francisco-alvarez-improves-rhythm-with-renovated-swing/If you read between the lines, it kinda sounds like Mendy thinks that the swing is not there yet. Praising him for his work ethic I guess, but not really sold on what he's seeing.
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2025 Posted February 14, 2025 If Alvarez hits like Bench or Piazza in '25, then yeah, he's 100% correct.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 14, 2025 Posted February 14, 2025 My impression of Álvarez' swing is that he swings so hard that he burns himself out. He can't be stopped for a month, but then his arms grow tired and his bat speed and control goes down and he's invisible for two months more.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2025 Posted February 14, 2025 (edited) Alvarez has so many issues in his swing. I can't find a clip from last year. But he not only opened up too early, he set up open and never took a stride, meaning he was already starting out wide open. Another issue is his head movement. You can see it in this clip below. The best hitters never move their head position throughout their swing. You can see Alvarez starts his head at a certain level, then drops it a bit during his takeback, then drops it even further when the ball approaches. It's hard enough to hit a baseball when your head is quiet. When the ball is moving, and the head is moving, it's impossible to stay consistent.Compare this to this clip of Robinson Cano. Just incredible how consistent he is.https://x.com/notgaetti/status/1884341605500330036https://x.com/notgaetti/status/1884341605500330036 Edited February 14, 2025 by Guest
