metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Didn't really care for him if I'm honest, always had a ready excuse
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 I think the thing that will linger with me the most is his Game 1 start against the Padres.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Gave up homers like crazy, probably losing his stuff but hadn't adjusted yet.On the good side he was intense and engaged. I do believe he wanted very much to win here.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 I thought he was real interesting in that most of his stuff was gone, but he still was able to get ahead on precision and adjustments and overall pitchability, and he was always willing to talk about the adjustments he was making, the adjustments that he was failing to make, and the new stuff he was trying. In that sense, he was sort of a more accountable version of Tom Glavine. Pedro Martinez at least still had an elite change by the time he got to the Mets, but with a lot of star veteran pitchers, all they show up with is their head, and that can make them more interesting, if less exciting.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 We liked watching him pitch here in Syracuse last summer on his rehab start, that was pretty cool. It was a bit presumptuous of him to be pissed about the Robertson trade - given his own inabilities to be a consistent ace at the top of this rotation. I did like watching him be pissed off as a Met, though.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 He was getting paid $43M a season to not give back the leads he gave back against Atlanta and San Diego in his last two starts last year. And this year he was simply mediocre. A big splash that got nobody wet.

Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 I really liked having him just because I'm a fan of Max Scherzer. What a pitcher. I was a bit disappointed in 2022, because he missed so much of the season, and this year because he was too inconsistent, but in the aggregate he was actually quite solid. 20-9, 3.02 with nearly 300 Ks in about 250 innings with the Mets. Who am I to complain? For a year-and-a-half, we had the legend Max Scherzer. Pretty cool.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 I liked watching him trying to adjust to the pitch clockNot a good Mets career here
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 The picture of intensity. Was pretty good in 2022, though he seemed to run out of gas down the stretch. Very inconsistent in 2023. Depending more on guile and sheer determination, rather than great stuff, at this point in his career.
dances_w_vowels Verified Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Here's a Max song. I have had fun doing this, don't mind me.Well that's no good, the Mets are bad,the Trade Deadline will make you sad So Max is gone, yeah Max is gone.'Cause there's not much left to say aboutThe money spent but there's no doubtingMax is gone, yeah Max is gone. When the Mets never seemto be livin up to your dreamsHe's traded to the AL West Max Scherzer's gone to Texas and for who?Who-oo-oo-ooIt takes more wins to get it right, And those are the facts of life.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Had a great 2022 for us but instead of accepting the outcome - and his part in it - in 2023 he played the "get me out of here" card and couldn't resist a blame-the-mets interview on the way out. He could have gone out as a fondly remembered piece of a 100 win team. instead he goes out remembered as Mike Hampton II.
