Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 The Harry Chiti thing likely wasn't prearranged.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 I think that's the question. Is it allowed to designate the PTBNL in the way suggested above? It may or may not be.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 I don't know what the answer is, but I don't think it should matter. You could make that trade if it wasn't prearranged, but not if it was prearranged? Why not? What's the worry?
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 I would guess JV would have to waive his no-trade clause twice. It's a pretty fun idea, very close to a soccer-style loan.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 I think a guy that is signed (and knows he's signed, and the public knows he's signed) to one team for this year and another team for next year, would be a worrisome precedent that I imagine MLB wouldn't allow, considering the conflicts of interest that you can foresee and the conflicts of interest that you can't foresee. If such a deal exists and the PtBNL isn't made public could change that concern, but given enough time, the identity of Ps-tbNL tend to almost always leak (if the teams have settled on a figure).
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 Are you saying that a Chiti type deal should be permitted, but not if it's prearranged? Or that even a Chiti type deal should be banned? I'm good with the second one, but not the first. If teams could do a Chiti, they should also be able to do a prearranged Chiti. Who wants to get into litigating intent and all of that?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 I'm not sure what should be permitted. I just think MLB wouldn't want it and I suspect they have some regulation about it. I assume that when a PtBNL deal is made, the terms are reported to MLB and they know whether it's a specific player or a selection from a pool of players that will be made later. I don't know, though. The Chiti deal, I imagine, wasn't pre-planned as it worked out, but instead came about when the actual plan fell through. The player that the Indians were aiming at had gotten hurt or arrested, and the league had to sign off on the return. But obviously, it was a very different time. But we can ask Dom Chiti if he can provide any insight.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 The name Harry Chiti always makes me hungry. 🤔
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 For chili or for Cheetos?Or for chili infused with Cheetos?
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 I know! It's something like that!
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 I got the impression that the Chiti trade wasn't really a trade at all but rather a loan that got called a trade when the NY press got a hold of it. Mets did lots if " conditional" transactions back then
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 IIRC, the PTBNL was implemented for two reasons:1) If the player you received played well, you gave up a better player, and vice versa.2) You couldn't trade a player while they were on the DL (now IL), so the name was released when the player returned from injury. But the true "loan" idea is interesting, sneaky enough that if this was football, Bill Belichick would ty it.The Chiti deal was a curiosity at the time and will forever be the answer to a trivia question.Later

stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 All this talk is reminding me of being in Boston the day David Cone was traded to Toronto for Jeff Kent and a PTBNL.Ryan Thompson wasn't selected until after the rosters expanded on September first, so the host on WEEI was speculating as who the Jays were sending the Mets way. One suggestion, by the host himself not a caller, was that Cone could be sent back to New York after the Blue Jays finished their season! Never mind the Jays wound up being World Champions that October, so talk about playing a long game to complete a transaction! But that was ignorantly not realizing Cone was a free agent to be heading into the 1993 season! Hence why the Mets moved him to a contender in a quintessential rental deal! The Mets were clearly not going to be in the Cone sweepstakes that offseason, so better get some MLB ready talent for him, but the point was more that even if the rules allowed for it, or a loophole was big enough to do it. There really wasn't any point to make Cone the PTBNL if he was going to hit the free agent market anyway.

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 So I looked this up. Mets purchase Chili from Cleveland in April for $25K. They send him to Jacksonville (a Cleveland farm club) in June when they add Gene Woodling. Stan Issacs writes about it months later. No PTBNL till then that I sawhttps://www.beta.mbtn.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/chiti.jpg>
