Honestly, good for San Diego. You want to see other teams spending to win, too.

I do wonder how much the thought of Cohen lurking in the background gave the Padres an extra sense of urgency to get something done ahead of time.

Sure, except for the part about committing to eleven years to a soon to be (July) 31 y/o. And this for a guy who wasn't keen about running stuff out when he was 26. "Not really my thing".

He's a terrific player but 'losing' him doesn't bother me at all.

Happy to see him sign in Sam Diego. If Cohen is Boras' new BFF then the Sam Diego ownership is Tony Clark's - so much for the smaller markets not being able to spend.

It's highly distinctive how the Pads' method seems to be to load up on shortstops and push them to other positions.

Tatis is due back in a few days, and I guess I'd know more if I read more, but I suppose Xander Bogarts is their shortstop now and Fernando goes to the outfield.

On the other hand, Bogaerts is headed to the WBC, so maybe Fernando is a shortstop again in the meantime. Or Machado. Or Ha-Seong Kim. I dunno.

All while paying them all as if they're starting (and star) shortstops.

It may work out for them yet.

The offensive standard at shortstop in baseball is so high now that I wouldn't be surprised if the average shortstop is out-hitting the average secondbaseman, thirdbaseman, and/or centerfielder. Catcher too, although nobody is getting pushed there.

I agree, but I call Baty Batymauricientos.

Why we would want to lust after other people's infielders, in the second halves of their careers, is a mystery.
