The closest thing the 2022 Mets had to a lefty specialist has signed with Boston. Never fully gained the trust of anybody but Buck Showalter. Excelled in building the bridge from deGrom to Diaz upon Jake's return to Citi Field on August 7 vs the Braves. Went on the IL during the NLDS after spending every day of the regular season active.

A few good games does not a season make.

Did he actually see the left field wall in Fenway before he signed?

I wish him well.

The crapeaters at Mets Roster Central didn't even have him listed as a free agent. This seemingly leaves Drew Smith as the team's second-highest-profile reliever.

Joely had a strong September when most of the Met relievers were taking it on the chin. He won twice in two appearance against Pittsburgh and Milwaukee, including two perfect innings in the first of those wins, striking out five of the six batters he faced.

Checking now, he pitched two perfect innings against those same Buccaroonies two days before that. Too bad he couldn't face the Pirates alla time.

I thought this headline was a bit over the top:

Mets lose first player in free agency — and it exposes big weakness

Especially when the actual story says this.

The Mets were not expected to retain Rodriguez.....

The IL certainly got a procedural workout in late September into October, so Rodriguez's spotless attendance record having ink spilled on it so late in his Met tenure may not have been a reflection of physical malady as much as dancing as fast as the front office could to prevent elimination. Joely took a seat in deference to Taijuan getting activated after Walker was left off the initial playoff roster. Buck never did break that particular pane of glass, even as Bassitt merited early removal in Game Three.

Reconstructing those events reminds a person of two things:

1) What an awful NLWCS that was, all told — one satisfying game bracketed within two soul-sucking parentheses.

2) How great it was to have had a postseason and have an addendum of this nature to sort out, despite the brevity/futility of the Mets' participation. Despite the air seeping out of the balloon in Atlanta and the fatal flatness against San Diego, the whole thing truly beats “…then we went home after Game 162.” Kudos to the owner and general manager determined to keep us going back to the postseason and go further in the postseason. It's the place to be.
