You've been watching baseball as long as you have and you can't comprehend that this happens all the time. Every single day. Because it's as normal as the sun rising. You really have a weak, almost child-like understanding of the game.Yeah. The Mets "let" the Padres walk all over them. Because it all comes down to character and who supposedly wants it more. Tom Seaver had a crappy WS W-L record. Wanna know why? It's because he lacked character and didn't wanna win those games as much as his opponents did. /rolls eyes It couldn't possibly be luck or randomness or that three WS games carries less weight and meaning than 600+ regular season games.

Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted October 10, 2022 Posted October 10, 2022 I need another day still. I was getting excited about at least a week or so of playoff energy, and all the wind came out of the sails over the last two week so fast that I'm still reeling a little. As much as I'm glad they went to a three game series over a wild card game, the suddenly dire aspect of the series when you lose game 1 is intense. You dial it up from 0-100, especially given that most teams have clinched now well before the last day, and then suddenly you're back is against the wall and they're coming for you. jarring.

TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2022 Posted October 10, 2022 I don't understand why some humans find it so hard to hold two truths in their head at the same time. It is perfectly acceptable (I would argue logical) to be both proud and disappointed in the 2022 Mets.At the end of any sports season, I take stock of performance vs. my expectations. Back in March, I was bearish on this team not knowing what to expect from the newcomers, McNeil coming off a pretty miserable 2021, deGrom not guaranteed to come back at all. I would have signed up for 100 wins in a heartbeat...still knowing that nothing is guaranteed in October.I wish they would have looked better over the past ten days...most of all because their play over than span was not indicative of the six months of play that came before it. Yes, winning championships is the "goal", but this was the best Mets regular season in 25+ years. I'm glad I got to experience the summer team even if the fall ended early.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2022 Posted October 10, 2022 This all started over some jock (Pete Alonso) making some throwaway comment in passing about just being in the playoffs is fun enough. Which it should be. Especially for Alonso, who was making his playoff debut. And then this pushy blowhard ties himself into pretzel knots and suicidal despair over Alsonso's words --- dragging us into his over the top diva dramatics and once again insulting the entire forum over this, just like he did with his Ostrosser quiz and just like he did when he couldn't convince the forum that the infield fly rule should be ditched. All because he didn't like what Alonso said. And the thing is, it was probably a throwaway comment that Alonso himself might not even remember any more. Alonso might've been thinking more about which restaurant he was gonna have dinner in after he left the stadium when he made his "fun" comment. And this jerk holds Alonso to this ridiculously absurd and unrealistic standard that you'd think Alonso should've spoken as if he was one of the framers and founders, debating about what to include in the Bill of Rights when he said he was having "fun".

This is all our faultI didn't catch this right away because I was too busy poking fun at it. But it finally sunk in. The audacity, the outrageous mindset and sense of superiority it takes for a person to tell another -- no, not tell -- insist -- on how they should "process their grief". Wow!
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2022 Posted October 10, 2022 Jason Fry (Faith and Fear in Flushing) on that game:I was there for that night, also known as Game 3 of the Wild Card Series.... Unlike Game 1, we had good neighbors — knowledgeable about the game, passionate about the Mets, and philosophical and mournful instead of vengeful and irrational once things spun out of control. [Emphasis added][***][T]he Mets lost one and then won one and then their opponents played better and so they lost a rubber game. There's nothing earth-shaking about that — I could have just described several chunks of any season, even a 101-win one. But because this particular rubber game came in October, people will try and tell you it means everything. They'll turn it into a referendum on the entire season, or say risible stuff about 26 guys wanting it more than 26 other guys, or opine about who was battle-tested or possessed the will to win. And it will all be nonsense. The Mets lost a rubber game in an exhibition series. It's disappointing and I'm sad about it, but fundamentally that's all that happened and all this other … stuff encrusting that fact is more than a little ridiculous. The postseason is a series of coin flips that we spin into Just So stories, and the more baseball I watch, the more resistant I am to the whole narrative industrial complex that surrounds the games.[***][D]on't let losing an exhibition series sour you on a 101-win campaign that was marvelous fun for six months. http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/bml and Jason Fry similarity score --- off the charts!

I hate all of the fans whose teams are still in contention.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2022 Posted October 11, 2022 I saw an analogy online that fits my current mood: the 2022 Mets' season was like the full series of Game of Thrones. Exciting and well executed right until the very end, which sucked and seemed unworthy of being attached to the rest of the whole.
