Do you know that the glass thing goes with the picture or is it just

happening to be in front of it making the picture confusing?

sorry, I should've re-arranged it. It's in a doctor's office desk and there were all sorts of magazine nonsense in front of that too. It's an unrelated award.

The glass certainly distorts the faces, but it appears to be Mike Vail, Willie Mays, and Lee Mazzilli. But I'm mostly guessing at Vail.



The autograph, of course, looks like none of them, and appears to be addressed to "Dr. Altchek," presumably Dr. David Altchek, but his association with the team began well after the tenures of those three players ended. Beyond that, the signature appears to be of some guy named Al, or at least, some guy whose name begins with A.



So that puts us at something of a sticking point.



Are you seeing Dr. Altchek for your orthopedic needs?

Mets with first name Al and then a family name that large in the signature seem to

be non-existent in my quick look around earlier.

Is it Al? I'm getting 'T' but again, I suck at sigs. Mays was only in uniform through '79 right? I don't see anyone with a 6* number on MBTN that seems to match, are all the coaches there? could this be some sort of all timers day later appearances? The doc isn't a young guy, but I assume this is a post playing days signature, not like "I had surgery in the offseason" surgery.

I actually took this picture my last visit and forgot about it. clearer look at the faces, less so the signature.

Well, at least we know that Dr. Altchek isn't Dr. Altcheck at all, but Dr. Cahill.



So much for my cryptology training.



Our guy is clearly a 60, and no Met wore that on the field in the 20th Century, much less the 1970s, so that would suggest that we're perhaps looking at a coachie, other support staff (bullpen catcher?), or a ghost Met. It would seem to be a Spring Training number, but the background is Shea, so there we are.

Definitely not Vail, who was claimed by Cleveland off waivers before having the chance to wear that uniform at Shea.

76,77,78,79 seems to be the overlap. There's no one listed at 60 besides Jessie, and none of the coaches seem to match that signature.

That mystery guy is either a coach or a minor leaguer. First of all, the earliest that picture could have been taken was 1978, the first year the Mets wore that uni. And the only players who wore numbers beginning with a '"6" in that uni, Mario Ramirez and Hubie Brooks, are definitely not that guy. (Orosco wore #61 for one game only in 1979, but that was a road game, and thus, a road uni. And that ain't Orosco anyways). Unless there's some other player that wore a # in the 60s at that time that the Mets uni database hasn't picked up yet.

yeah, figured the uniform would help. I think Mays was only there until '79, so that's two years.



It certainly doesn't look like a coach right? especially in the 70s. I tried to do a reverse image search on the headshot and got nothing. I don't see any names on Tidewater or Jackson that look like an Al or something. hmm.

My new theory is that it's JFK, Jr. who had visited with Willie in the Mets dugout a few years earlier, and is here back, somehow passing as an adult as he approaches his 18th birthday, using his name to get on the field and hang with the Mets' star centerfielder and legendary coach, rocking the number 60 in honor of his birth year.



Reconciling that, which is already the stretchiest of stretches, with the autograph, is ... not something I'm about to pull off.

First time I'm seeing it.



My guess it's blowback against fans that who are anticipating the inevitable disaster that is around the corner, as opposed to soaking in the moment.



Pretty much, “don't worry that the lead is a game this late in the season, just enjoy the fact that you root for a 90+ win (now 95) first place team that will be in the postseason.”



With no mention of a “for now” caveat, or the issues that could make the postseason run a short one.

That's one more reason post-season proliferation is counter-productive. No team that wins 68% of the time — and no fans of such a team — should feel disappointed all winter because of a season that ended with a post-season loss, in whatever round.
