The Cardinals would have to win more games than they have remaining in order to do that. They can finish with a better record than the Braves, but not a better record than the Mets. (They can tie the Mets, but the Mets hold the tiebreaker advantage.)

His name is at or near the top of many of the lists. He didn't ground into any double plays, though. I wonder if he regrets that?

Meanwhile, this from Anthony DiComo about Terrance Gore:

Should the Mets manage to win it all this year, Gore's unique career would take an historic turn.

The pinch-running specialist is already one of the only players in MLB history to earn three World Series rings for three different franchises: the 2015 Royals, the 2020 Dodgers and the 2021 Braves. Making his feat more unique is the fact he didn't actually play in any of those Fall Classics. (Gore was on the World Series roster for Kansas City and Atlanta but didn't appear in a game. He did not make any of the Dodgers' postseason rosters.

Only 16 players have been on a winning World Series roster for three different franchises, including Jack Morris, Dave Stewart and Steve Carlton. Gore has a chance to become the 17th. No one has done it for at least four franchises.

Teams typically give out World Series rings to anyone who contributed over the course of the season, even if it was for a single game in April. As such, there's no data to determine how many players -- if any -- actually earned a ring with four or more teams. But the list is assuredly small, and Gore is the rare player with a chance to crack it.

“It would be special,” said Gore, who signed a Minor League deal in June. “It's definitely what I'm trying to do. When the Mets called, I knew they had a really good ballclub. So I'm putting all my eggs in one basket, and we'll see what happens.”

Steve Carlton would have been with the 1967 Cardinals (I assume) and 1980 Phillies. I can't think of what his third team would have been.

A 42-year-old Carton went 1-5 for the 1987 Twins. He didn't see any post season action but did briefly return the next season to go 0-1.

OE: Beaten.

My favorite ring collector is Lonnie Smith, 1980 Phil, 1982 Card, and 1985 Royal.

He would return to the World Series with the Braves in 1991 and 1992 but come up empty because the 1990s Braves did that sort of thing.

He might have returned again with the 1994 Orioles but the post-season was canceled and he never returned after the strike.

I think your spelly checky is rewriting your "Tylor Megill."

It's sort of strangely arbitrary and not particularly logically consistent that a play-in game, played by two teams tied for a post-season spot, counts as an in-season game rather than a post-season game.

It didn't matter so much when the season was scheduled to be 154 games and typically with some of those never quite played to a result. But now that we have several rounds of playoff madness, we should recognize those games for what they are.

If it knocks one homer off of Reggie Jackson's all-time regular-season total, or one win off of Al Leiter's regular season record, so be it.
