Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 I've been playing some online Acrostic puzzles lately, and decided to try my hand at creating one. (I found a utility that makes it pretty easy. Doing it by hand would be maddening.)Anyway, here it is. It's Mets-related, so it belongs in this forum. If I make more of them I may fully incorporate it into the UMDB.If you've never done an Acrostic before, you fill in the answers in the lower section and as you do, you start to be able to fill out the boxes in the upper part, which contains a quotation. The first letters of each solved clue at the bottom spells out the author of the quote. If I haven't explained it well, there's a more comprehensive explanation here: https://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/puzzles/acrostic-puzzles.htmhttps://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/puzzles/acrostic-puzzles.htmAnyway, here's the puzzle. I hope you enjoy it.https://leaptoad.com/mets/puzzle1.phphttps://leaptoad.com/mets/puzzle1.php
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 This. Is. Totally. Awesome.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2022 Author Posted August 15, 2022 Let me know what you think. Too easy? Too hard?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 It's totally puzzling. I believe the second clue should be four words.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 I love acrostics! Not feeling well so I'm printing it out to work on in bed
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2022 Author Posted August 15, 2022 Edgy MD wrote:I believe the second clue should be four words.Yes, I caught that myself a few minutes ago and have corrected it.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 I have qualms with your "F" clue. I'd go with "Oscar nominee for 'Juno'" or something along those lines.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Author Posted August 16, 2022 Yeah, but she was "Ellen" then. I originally had it as "She used to be Ellen" but realized that was bad, and changed it to "He".
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 Yeah, but it's bad form to deadname.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Author Posted August 16, 2022 Hmmm. I wasn't aware of that.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Author Posted August 16, 2022 Okay, I changed it. Thanks for pointing it out.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 Realized pen and paper were not going to work since it's interactive lolLove the idea though!Personally I suck at Proper nouns
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Author Posted August 16, 2022 It would have worked on paper, it's just harder to correct mistakes.
cal sharpie Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 Very nice. I'm a big acrostic fan and have done the NYT acrostic every other Sunday for probably 30 years. They don't use punctuation which makes it more difficult.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 wow, that was hard. the formatting was messing with my head. 94 is part of the same word as 95. that had me stumped for a long ass time.

That's the first thing I look for
cal sharpie Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 Yeah, no apostrophes - never mind commas or periods. Also, much longer than this quote.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 This is great and I had no clue on hardly any of it. More please
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Author Posted August 16, 2022 Both puzzles are available on this page: http://leaptoad.com/mets/puzzles.phphttp://leaptoad.com/mets/puzzles.phpFor the second puzzle (dated August 16) I was able to have some of the clues relate to the Mets.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 It looked kinda small on my screen, but I was able to work it out.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2022 Author Posted August 16, 2022 Yeah, I had to use the zoom option in my browser for the larger puzzle.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 My browser wouldn't blow it up with a zoom-in. All the other elements of the page enbiggened, but not the puzzle.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2022 Author Posted August 17, 2022 There's now a third puzzle. http://leaptoad.com/mets/puzzles.phphttp://leaptoad.com/mets/puzzles.php
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 17, 2022 Posted August 17, 2022 What is a "British male monarch"? I've never heard of such a thing.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2022 Author Posted August 17, 2022 Should it be "male British monarch" instead?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 17, 2022 Posted August 17, 2022 I just think it's funny, because I've practically come to think of the UK as a by-definition matriarchal society. It's been a long time since that lyric has been sung in earnest.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2022 Author Posted August 18, 2022 The fourth puzzle has been posted. http://leaptoad.com/mets/puzzles.phphttp://leaptoad.com/mets/puzzles.php
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 ‘E' had me stumped. Good one!
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2022 Posted August 22, 2022 Btw I also did not know that about Todd Zeile
