I know that it's common wisdom to bring in your closer in the 9th inning of a tie game, BUT as long as the ghost runner rule exists I'd feel more confident with Edwin Diaz on the mound than anyone other reliever. Anyone want to tell me why it's dumb to save your closer for the 10th inning when you know there's going to be a runner in scoring position (and if the guy who starts the 9th allows a baserunner you can always bring in the closer earlier, of course)?

Yeah, you're not wrong. I wanted him for both innings, but the 10th and maybe 11th is fine also.

I'd have gone to Edwin for the 10th after only throwing 8 pitches in the 9th but whaddyagonnado.



The Apple team was horrible. By the 3rd inning I was listening to Howie and Wayne even though they were a batter ahead of the broadcast.



Phillies do seem to have solved some of their problems and could be an interesting playoff team.



Tough loss, but go get 'em tonight boys.

Textbook example of Rob Manfred ruining baseball. Game decided without a batter reaching base in extra innings.



Abysmal and offensive.

I stayed up replaying this game in my mind.



Twice failing to get the runner in from third with less than two outs, including in the 10th.



Two injured-or-not-injured infielders in one inning.



The send from third? Was it a tough ask of Marte? Sure! Did he have a better chance scoring then than Canha would have driving him home? Probably?



The play at the plate — Nido had four options:

2. Go get the throw on a fly and dive back for the tag.


4. Go get the ball on a short hop and lunge back for the tag.


6. Take the ball on the in-between hop and slap down the tag.


8. Back up, take the ball on the long hop, hope it doesn't hit the runner, and lunge forward for the tag.

No option is great, and he chose number three, but (a) he had more time than he realized, and ( that being so, he tried to make the catch and tag in one motion and gakked.



I was a terrible catcher, so I judge lightly and reluctantly. I also know these choices are forced to be made with a pointless and ambiguous rule bouncing around in the back of their heads. But catchers on championship teams gots to find a way to make those plays.



The Phils played tighter defense over 10 innings and it won them the game.



Also, I wish Guillorme was just a stitch faster.
