Mets are said to be acquiring OF Tyler Naquin and LHP Phillip Diehl from the Reds in exchange for minor leaguers Jose Acura and Hector Rodriguez, both teenagers in rookie ball

Naquin, a former 1st round (15th overall) pick in 2012 from Texas A&M, can be a FA at the end of the year.

Career stats for the lefty swinger = .269/.323/.450 // 774 (120 OPS+) for Cleveland and later Cincy

So what's the deal with Diehl? 27 y/o, just 21 games/19 innings pitched in ML (5 this season) all in relief.

From what I'm reading, Naquin is a depth piece giving Buck options such as Naquin starting in the OF against a RHP and sitting Canha. Martino says it keeps McNeil at 2B instead of sometimes in LF so Guillorme can play 3B and Escobar can sit (which I'm not wild about but they didn't ask me).

Presumably Jankowski heading to the minors. Naquin is neither as fast nor as good a defender…but he can actually hit some while Jankowski has not really shown that ability.

A depth move, but Naquin has had his moments with the bat.

Seriously? We couldn't go with "Mets Make Acuna Trade" as the subject? Goodness, we're getting soft.

I was expecting "Deadline Diehl" when I checked the board.

Mets confirm trade. Naquin will wear 25.

Ghost Met R.J. Alvarez has been DFA'd.

Thus far Diehl's career numbers do not make me see him as the answer to the Mets need for a quality lefty reliever. Naquin is having an off year at the plate. At least the Mets didn't have to give up a great deal (at least for the foreseeable future) in this trade.

He might, but Diehl rhymes with McNeil.
