A cruel irony to see Smith replaced by a guy shaped like the guy everybody was afraid Smitty was growing into.

Smith instead gets into decent shape and they bring in his chunky white twin to try to take his gig away.

Smith never became the hitter we thought he could be, but for a very brief glimpse in a covid-shortened year.

Smith was drafted by the Mets way back in 2013. In the 2013 National League, Smith is probably still the the better roster fit. But in 2022 with a 26 man roster, a 13 pitcher limit, a DH, and the team's best (or 2nd best? whatever) hitter a 1st baseman, Vogelbach - a man who crushes righties, can't lefties, and can't play the field at all, becomes more valuable to the Mets in this league with this team.

more I think on this, the more I sour on it. It's spending a reliever on a recency bias bet, and I'm not sure I'd even confidently bet Vogelbach would be better than J.D. Davis the rest of the way.

I'm not keen either, but he's a lefty so it's probably not an either/or thing with Davis. I think it's more of a shore-up-with-redundancy move.

will Davis shouldn't be platooned, so there's that. for instance, Davis should've been in there last night, not random minor leaguer.

On one hand, Vogelbach hits right-handers more than well enough to justify parting with a AAAA reliever to get him. On the other hand, his approach might not be a good fit for our home park at all. He is actually hitting for a better average then normal this year, at least against righties. So the question is has he made some adjustments to his extremely one-dimensional approach (which would be a good thing), or has he gotten lucky (in which case ceetar is probably right). I'd like to think the team looked into that before pulling the trigger -- I mean, it's not the Wilpons anymore -- but I guess we'll see.

Sure. But the Mets haven't been able to consistently score runs for a while now, and I'm still glad they did something different even while I might already expect they paid too high a price. At the risk of sounding like a certain former president "what else do they have to lose."

I think this is more of a 'show Dom the door' move.

Yeah, hopefully Dom has a sub-let clause in his lease because 'he gone.'

Dom is currently on the IL, and he can't be dealt while on it.

The clock is ticking.

No longer the case.

10. A player on an MLB or minor league injured list can be traded, even if the player is not eligible to be reinstated and/or healthy enough to play.

NOTE: As far as a player having to spend a certain number of days on an IL before he is eligible to be reinstated is concerned, in the case of a trade, time already spent on an injured list is carried-over to the player's new club.

Bad news: Darn rule changes. :(

Good news: They can trade Smith now.
