Not 26-man roster business, but R.J. Alvarez, who had lingered as a potential ghost since DFA, has been outrighted to Syracuse. Like Gosuke Katoh, he remains theoretically alive.

J.D. Davis traded, clearing a space for the activation of JACOB DEGROM.

Sam Clay optioned; Kramer Robinson (inf) recalled.

Kramer Robiertson here and gone, DFA'd.

Nogosek and Lopez optioned.

Welcome Ruf and Givens. Welcome back May.

There's a strong argument that as of today, the Mets have the best, healthiest, and most complete roster they've had all year.

ruf is probably fine enough as a 1b backup that it likely would not be worth the cost of dom's 2022 bat in our lineup.

does joely rodriguez actually add anything to our team?

Tommy Hunter goes on the IL with “low back tightness,” replaced by day half starter David Peterson. Yoan Lopez is the 27th fella.

The roster increases to 28 on September 1 (that date remained constant despite the season moving back for another 3 days). Just two more players so I'm thinking that one will be a catcher and one will either be a pitcher or "a fast guy".

Guillorme to IL with moderate groin strain, 4 to 6 weeks. Corresponding middle infielder move is coming.

Nido out for non baseball reason. Michael Perez activated.

Deven Marrero gets the call to replace Guillorme, with 3B, SS and 2B experience. If he and Perez are both on the active roster, it can be inferrred Nido may be going on the COVID IL, though that hasn't been announced.

4 to 6 weeks is not all that moderate.

As restrained as moderate sounds without broader context, I'm guessing that it's the medium grade between mild and severe.

On the other hand, I tend to think of a muscle strain as the lowest grade of tissue stress injury, beneath pull, and tear.

But now we have stress reactions, so who knows?

Baty and Alvarez are better than Perez and Marrero. This isn't even a question. I know, "development" and whatever, but I see no real reason why you wouldn't bring them up in this spot now.

without marerro, our middle infield depth is, what, eduardo escobar?

as much as i'd like to see baty up, i'm really not sure i'd like to see escobar need to play too much second base.

i fully expect baty and/or vientos to show up in september, but right now, the middle infield gives me the willies. especially with mcsquirrel already a bit banged up.

maybe those lengthy depth chart discussions weren't all too bad.

supposedly defense.

Baty might be more defensible in that he can't play 2nd/SS which Guillorme did but to my mind Esco Go Go becomes the utility dude if Lindor needs a day off.

Alvarez I just don't get - even if all he did was get a few at bats and work on the side/in the bullpen with the pitchers he'd benefit from it you'd think...

I'm getting the idea that Escobar's current soreness makes him a lousy alternative at shortstop, so they specifically want someone who can do more than fake it there.

If they were to launch a prospect, I'd think that Vientos is still ahead of Baty, though perhaps less so than he was six months ago.

I feel strongly that we'll see Alvarez in September. Right now, with McCann as the #1, they need someone to probably of 30% or more of the starts, so "a few at bats and work on the side/in the bullpen with the pitchers" probably isn't something they feel they can afford to devote a roster slot to just yet.

Remember, the roster only expands by two this year, not the 15 that it used to be. I'm not so sure that Alvarez will be one of the two, especially given the numbers he currently has at Syracuse. I would guess Vientos or Baty and a pitcher.
