G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted February 21, 2022 Author Posted February 21, 2022 Having maintained objectivity as the most straitlaced of ESPN anchors for 40 years, Bob Ley has in recent times come out as a diehard MLBS. I heard him wax nostalgic for Shea on the (highly recommended) Lost Ballparks podcast and found his further testimony in an interview mostly about another sport with ace soccer writer Grant Wahl.I'm a huge Mets fan. And I love their TV booth. I think it's the best in the business.https://grantwahl.substack.com/p/q-and-a-bob-leyhttps://grantwahl.substack.com/p/q-and-a-bob-ley

bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2022 Posted March 6, 2022 I've never heard of the band Coheed and Cambria but I'm sure that they are great![bLOCKQUOTE]“This is just devastating. Opening Day is a holiday in my house. I've flown home — left the studio and flown home — for Opening Day,” said Josh Eppard, drummer for progressive rock band Coheed and Cambria and a lifelong Mets fan. “This was the year baseball was back. My Mets are making huge moves — I mean, [they signed] Max f---ing Scherzer! And now it's just — kerplunk. I just can't imagine they're going to do this to us after covid.“It's the perfect time for baseball to capture America after we've lifted the veil of covid, and they're shooting themselves in the foot. I'm gutted that now we're going to have a shortened season for the second time in three years. I can't help but feel as a fan that we're at the bottom of the pole here, that no one is thinking of the fans.”https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/03/06/covid-baseball-lockout/https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/03/06/covid-baseball-lockout/[/bLOCKQUOTE]

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2022 Author Posted March 23, 2022 Keith Olbermann professes love for the Mets.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 I mean, I get it, but let's not compare a rookie 120 years ago to a guy with a pretty established track record pre-injury.
dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 Plus Harry Krause didn't blow out his arm. The major league hitters figured him out, but he went on to win 250 games in the PCL. Pitched until he was forty, throwing 200, 300, even 400 innings.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 Yeah, but that's pretty much the way Olberman likes to play it.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 Not clear to me what Olbermann is calling "nonsense", something GKR said, something else said on SNY, or that the Mets are flogging JdG too hard, too early.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 I think he's calling bullshit on the apparent implication of the graphic that these three seasons that finished far stronger than deGrom's were exclusively the track he was on and the most obvious comparisons, when there are seasons in which other pitchers pitched brilliantly through 15 starts, but are now lost to history.I think.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 You know what they say, once you mention Harry Krause in a discussion, you've pretty much lost the argument.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 Here's his profile description.https://metsrostercentral.files.wordpress.com/2022/03/screen-shot-2022-03-23-at-12.18.40-pm.png>So, a little bit of self-regard, a little bit of cliche passed off as clever, and a little bit of contempt for his audience.I think Olberman's done some great work, but those three things have undercut him for a long time.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 Olbermann can definitely be a frustrating character.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 Olbermann's both a shrewd observer and an asshole. That's his brand.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 That pretty much sums it up, both on the sports and news sides of his career.I liked his last stint at ESPN where he had a half-hour show with what seemed like carte blanche to do as he liked. But it didn't last long because nothing he does, does.In that case the network was probably at fault at least as much as him. Olbermann is foremost a baseball & hockey fan on a network which barely allows the rest of their talent to discuss either. He also wasn't shy about revealing his distaste for the current state of in big time college sports, something which certainly wasn't going to win him many fans in mgmt of a network which essentially owns and runs those sports.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2022 Author Posted April 12, 2022 Within the Shahs of Sunset, Bravo reality celebs for the uninitiated, lurks a clan of MLBS (from 2021).Mercedes "MJ" Javid and her husband, Tommy Feight, have been hosting spectacular bashes for their son since he was a teeny baby. For Shams Francis' sip and see back in 2019, the proud parents chose a carnival theme and served cocktails garnished with cotton candy. And when Shams turned 2 this April, MJ and Tommy went big — ballpark-style. In an Instagram post from April 19, the Shahs of Sunset mama shared snaps from Shams' Mets-themed bash. "Shams is 2," she wrote in her caption. We are SO grateful & feel so fortunate to our family for these gatherings. If you need any tips on mastering the challenging art of DIY kids crafts, I am an expert now, pre-booking consultations." She added wryly: "Kidding, it almost killed me to host 5 people for ... 4 hours."But it looks like MJ's efforts paid off. Her photos show an adorable cake covered in pinstripes and baseball caps. The party had a colorful balloon arch dotted with baseball-shaped balloons, and arts and crafts for the guests. The birthday boy matched the theme, dressed up in a little Mets jersey and blue baseball pants.https://www.bravotv.com/shahs-of-sunset/style-living/mj-javid-tommy-feights-son-shams-2nd-birthday-party-mets-themehttps://www.bravotv.com/shahs-of-sunset/style-living/mj-javid-tommy-feights-son-shams-2nd-birthday-party-mets-theme
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2022 Author Posted April 24, 2022 In a Washington Post profile of Jon Stewart ahead of his receiving the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, it is noted that when Stewart hosted The Daily Show, he came to work in the same outfit every day: “a T-shirt, khakis and a Mets cap, like Steve Jobs and his turtlenecks.” Indeed, in a recent episode of his podcast, Stewart worked a reference to the Mets into a discussion about the media (they both get his hopes up only to disappoint him).https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2022/04/22/jon-stewart-twain-prize/https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2022/04/22/jon-stewart-twain-prize/
