G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 We officially have a general manager.FLUSHING, N.Y., November 18, 2021 — The New York Mets today announced the team has signed Billy Eppler to a 4-year contract to be the club's 16th General Manager.Eppler, 46, served as the Los Angeles Angels General Manager from 2015–2020 and worked for the New York Yankees in a variety of capacities from 2004–2015, rising to Assistant General Manager, before joining the Angels on October 4, 2015.“Billy has the experience, character, and respect of the baseball community that will allow him to attract the players and front office talent to lead the Mets forward,” said Mets Owner, Chairman, and CEO Steve Cohen. “He is a leader who has worked in two of baseball's biggest markets and his talents and personality will move us closer to my goal of sustained success.”During his time with the Angels, Eppler signed Shohei Ohtani in December, 2017, agreed on a 12-year extension with Mike Trout just before the 2019 season and tabbed Joe Maddon as the team's manager during the 2019 offseason.Eppler joined WME Sports as part of their baseball representation in September, 2021.“Over the past two decades, Billy has been a scout and an assistant GM. He's also more than familiar with the New York Market. This uniquely qualifies him to lead our efforts going forward,” said Mets President Sandy Alderson. “He's smart, he hustles and has a keen eye for identifying talent. He's going to make us better. I am really pleased that we have someone of his caliber leading the Mets.”“I'm so thankful to Steve and Sandy for what I consider an opportunity of a lifetime,” said Mets GM Billy Eppler. “We have a lot of work to do and will systematically begin to work towards our goal of building a perennial winner. I also have to thank WME for the amazing opportunity to join their baseball group, which is building something very special.”Zoom press conference at 12:30 PM Friday on your SNY feeds.https://newyorkmets.medium.com/mets-name-billy-eppler-general-manager-9da76a9ac9f0https://newyorkmets.medium.com/mets-name-billy-eppler-general-manager-9da76a9ac9f0

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2021 Posted November 19, 2021 Eppy speaking now with the reporters.Wants to pow-wow with the brass to discuss what kinda mngr they all want. Doesn't expect a new mgr this week but soon.Texting with agents right now.Says goal for offense is to increase the run differential. Wants to evaluate players' focus and concentration in addition to quantitative stats, a lesson he learned from Gene Michael.Perceives the Mets to be an org with a strong following but "depth challenges" but thinks the club has resources to succeed long-term.Cohen says "he's a pro." Impressed with his people skills and knowledgeThrilling so far.Sandy will be Billy's boss and his role will diminish over time
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2021 Posted November 19, 2021 Lessons from Anaheim: Had little depth in minors and didn't think they had enough to overtake Houston right away, so strategy was mid-level FAs to get by and prepare to spend big when youngsters arrived. Pitching injuries were too much in 17 & 18. Vetting process has evolved since Callaway hiring
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted November 19, 2021 Posted November 19, 2021 Nothing about that press conferences enthused me. Still a wait and see if they follow through on any of their spin. Seems lilke they DON'T want to trade any of their top-100 guys, and supposedly Eppler will be 'driving' the process, but we'll see.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2021 Posted November 19, 2021 Why would any adult ever get enthused over these kinds of pressers? It's always the same shit. Great city. Great fans. Great owners. We're gonna get better.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted November 19, 2021 Posted November 19, 2021 I dunno about 'enthused' but a firm "Not worried about the luxury tax cap" or some indication that they even care about 2022 would've at least stirred some hope. Instead we got "We're already at 185 million!" and "signing the front of those checks is the hardest job!" and laughing about collapsing last year.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted November 19, 2021 Posted November 19, 2021 yes. The first was Cohen as part of a long answer where you does say he's prepared to give them what they need but also hedges a lot.The second, about the checks, was Eppler talking about signing free agents and making sure they're good decisions.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 That's terrific. Elizabeth Benn has played for (and still plays for, for all I know) https://www.yonkersrailsplitters.com/pitchingThe Yonkers Railspliitters of the New York City Metro Baseball League. As far as I could tell, she was the only woman on the team, which was almost all Latino, last I checked.Look at that control! Two walks in 32 innings!
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2022 Posted February 28, 2022 In that case, heck, give her a spring training invite and see what she's got.
