Please consider being discreet with regard to answering each other's bonus questions out loud. That could work against your interests, or the interests of an innocent third party.

Still sitting on three Lefty Spec bonus questions. I'll jump ahead to a few more answers meantime.

Lefty Specialist wrote:

Michael Conforto...

This is correct for three points!

Your Lefty Specialist Bonus Question: Who Is the earliest MLB first-round draft pick that is still active (or at least was at the end of the 2021 season)?

Lefty Specialist wrote:

Gary Sheffield...

This is correct, for five points!

Your SECOND Lefty Specialist Bonus Question: In 2016, Daulton Jefferies was the Oakland A's first round draft pick. Which former Met is his uncle??

Lefty Specialist wrote:

Jon Matlack.

Matlack is correct. He is our first #1 draft pick to flourish. This gives you three additional points putting you, at the time of this posting, within one point of the lead!

Lefty's new bonus question (and our first to be repeated!): How many Mets first rounders were born in New York state?

Still trying to proceed while we discover the whereabouts of Lefty Specialist.

Good work staying with 1980, Baby! Three points and the lead for you!

Your Bonus Question: How many father/son combinations shared first-round draft pick status? These are father/son pairs (Metly or not) that were each drafted in the first round of the MLB draft.

Aaron Heilman

You're always in the game with Notre Dame! Three points and welcome to the board!

Your Bonus Question: What date marked the first appearance of a first-round draft pick in a Mets uniform?

Chad ochoseis wrote:

Gregg Jefferies

Correct! A first rounder and an almost unheard-of two-time minor league player of the year honoree.

Your Bonus Question: What city has the largest Francophone metropolitan area?

Johnny Lunchbucket wrote:

Billy Beanebag

And the third of the three in-house 1980 selections comes off the board!

Your Bonus Question: How many Mets who were Rookie of the Year winners, no matter which team they were with when they won it?

I don't have time to show the updated display of the all-time tables, but her are your scores.

Scoring

  1. Ben Grimm: 13

Tempted to go with “June 1965” but I'll guess they did not

have the draftees wear the jersey on on draft day like they do now.

So…wild guess…April 15, 1967??

You are effing with me. You are so effing with me.

You want me to say Montreal, right? But I'm almost certain it isn't Montreal. 4 million in the Montreal area, and I think Paris is larger than that. But I don't think it's Paris, either.

Dakar, Senegal.

Gregg would have been too obvious. So it's Blas Minor.

4. Total guess.

I like your logic and commitment to the question, but not quite. Dakar has the sixth-largest Francophone metro area. I'm glad to see you alive and well.

That's 10 bonus points for you!! Waino was drafted with the 29th pick of the 2000 draft. He is technically a 20th century ballplayer.

The second overall pick taken in the 1973 draft, courtesy of the Phillies. It took 17 rounds for him to go in the stupid, stupid NFL draft. This is five points for you, moving you squarely into fourth place!!!

We spin the wheel of 50 bonus questions, and … amazingly, you get another repeat question! What city has the largest Francophone metropolitan area?

Frayed Knot wrote:
Royce Ring

Royce Ring is currently a Mets pitching coach and was once the return on a trade by the Mets of Hall-of-Fame second baseman (and currently mysteriously banished from MLB employment) Roberto Alomar. He was also a #18 overall pick by the White Sox, and that means five points for you!!

This deposes Chad ochoseis from his brief reign as fourth-place holder, and it earns you an exciting bonus question!

Your bonus question: How many siblings of 1986 Mets were drafted by an MLB team?

Kris Benson.

You know how to pick ‘em. You get five, rather than three, points for naming a Met first-rounder selected by another organization, and you get an extra three points for naming a #1 overall pick.

Eight points! That's enough to bounce you into fourth place (our third change in that position in a row!), and you can get even more if you correctly answer a bonus question!

Your bonus question: What date marked the first appearance of a first-round draft pick in a Mets uniform? (I'm pretty sure that's come up before, but hey, answer it correctly, and you'll never have to see again!)

Chad ochoseis wrote:

Supplemental picks that teams are given at the end of the first round are variously described as first-rounders, 1a picks, or sandwich-round picks. For the purposes of this quiz, we will treat these as legit first-rounders.

Just noticed this rule. Cap'n David Wright.

Chad, depressed about falling out of fourth, is not ashamed to take a big ol' bite o' some low-hanging fruit. That three-point EXPLOSION not only knocks you back into a tie for fourth, but really gets things jammed up in the pack behind leader Lefty Specialist, with five players sitting within three points of each other.

But you, Chad, you don't want not three points. You're here for the bonus money!

Your bonus question: How many Mets were MLB Rookie of the Year winners, no matter which team they were with when they won it? (Another returning question? Another returning question!)

Let's see that scoring!

Scoring

  1. Lefty Specialist: 31

  2. Ben Grimm:: 13

  3. Seawolf:: 12

  4. Chad Ochoseis:: 11

  5. Gwreck:: 11

  6. Frayed Knot:: 10

  7. Johnny Lunchbucket:: 6

  8. Marshmallow Milkshake:: 3

I'm going to pass on the Francophone question and request another. I looked up the answer after missing it the first time.

ROYs? Quite a few, I think. So many guys just passed through that I think we're ROYs at some point.

I'll go with 9.

And now that we're active again, I think Gary Gentry was on his way to greatness before he ran into arm trouble. What might have been if Dr. Frank Jobe had thought about harvesting tendons a few years sooner than he did? We might be talking about GG surgery and not TJ surgery. Anyway, Gary's my guess as another first round pick.

Posted

So here's how we're doing the bonus questions: We have fifty. We spin the wheel and whatever comes up, comes up. As folks answer any questions correctly, I've been adding new onez to keep the number at fifty.

Part of the idea is to return to some of the more enigmatic questions so incorrect answers can lead to correct ones. So, yeah, it's probably not a good idea to look up a question a colleague missed when we may get that ourselves question later. Good on Chad for passing honorably.

Chad's new bonus question: Most first rounders in recent years still have most of their futures ahead of them, but some classes are never going to pan out. Which first round, before 2017, produced the lowest average bWAR among all draftees?

As far as the Rookie of the Year question, I'm sorry, but the answer we're looking for is more than nine!

I got this bonus question last time, and was told my guess of April 15, 1967 was “too early.” So…how about April 15,

1968?

Posted

Whoa...more than 9 ROYs. And I deliberately guessed on the high side.

I have no clue on the bWAR question. I'll go with the late 80s on the basis that draft analytics were still only half baked then, if baked at all, and statistics for players who were in their prime in the 90s were skewed by steroids. Call it 1987.

While we're waiting, one more hotshot catching prospect that we got in return for a popular pitcher - Travis d'Arnaud.

I skipped this answer earlier, and I shouldn't have, because it's GOOD FOR FIVE POINTS AND SECOND PLACE!

Another bonus question for Chad: Which year's draft featured three consecutive first rounders who ultimately got to be Mets?

Benjamin Grimm wrote:

Randy Myers

This answer provided endless handwringing back at headquarters, as we reviewed rule number three.

  • 3. Not included will be first-rounders from the old January supplemental draft or other supplemental amateur drafts that have existed or not existed over that period. Junebugs only.

Randall K. was a number-one pick in the now-extinct June secondary phase back in 1982, reserved for a constricted pool of players who had already been drafted but were not signed. This was indeed a supplemental draft under Rule 3 above, so we cannot allow this as a correct answer. This draft did, however occur in June, and we can understand how the final sentence under Rule 3 might be taken as conflicting information. There will therefore be no section of one point from Ben's score.

Going forward, however, be forewarned. Supplemental and secondary phases dinna count, even if they are in June.

Frayed Knot wrote:
Ike Davis

No such handwringing was necessary in scoring this one. Ike was the Mets' top draft pick in 2008, and his name gives you three points!

This pulls you into a tie for third, as four players jockey with only two points separating them!

Your bonus question Is good ol' #41: Which Mets first-round draft choice (not necessarily a Met) was the first such draftee to receive a bonus valued at over a million dollars in 2021 figures?

We're looking for a guy who didn't necessarily get a million dollars at the time, but after adjusting for inflation and cost of living, it's 2021 equivalent would totally be over a million dollars.

Mets! Economics! Math! Good luck!

Chad ochoseis wrote:
Big Pelf

Ocho is so ON in this quiz that he gives zero shits about names and goes right for the nicknames! We should give him a nickname-based trivia question! Anyhow, he's right for three points, breaking further away from that third-place pack!

Your bonus question: Who was the first US first lady with a formal education?

First bonus question:. Beats me. 1994?

Second bonus question: it's rather shocking how few first ladies I can think of. I need to shore up my first lady knowledge, as well as my Francophone city knowledge.

I'll go early 20th century. Her name is Mrs. Edith Wilson, and she likes Woodrow, bub.

Posted

Chad shows some good spirit and mindfulness, But 1994 is a later date than we are looking for, and Edith Wilson is a later first lady than we seek.

Edith Wilson was an educated and distinguished woman, an alum of Martha Washington College, appropriately enough, but she wasn't even Wilson's first educated first lady. Woody's first wife Ellen graduated secondary school and even went on to co-ed study at The Art Students League of New York.

Sorry if clarity was lacking, but by "formally educated," we speak of attendance at institutions of primary and/or secondary education — not necessarily university-level l'arnin'.

We have two bonus questions still on the board, both for the same competitor.

For Frayed Knot: How many siblings of 1986 Mets were drafted by an MLB team?

For Frayed Knot: Which Mets first-round draft choice (not necessarily a Met) was the first such draftee to receive a bonus valued at over a million dollars in 2021 figures?

We've got to at least get our Sandy Alderson #1's all on the board and Brandon was Sandy's #1 #1! Three points for you! This pulls you away from the field and toward the leaders, giving you some breathing room in sole possession of third!

Your bonus question: Who ended George Brett's 30-game hitting streak in 1980?

Chad ochoseis wrote:
Zack Wheeler

A giant of a pick by a giant of an organization, Zack's trade to the Mets allowed Carlos Beltran to go west and do what he does, going a Beltranian .323 / .369 / .551 // .920 down the stretch for the 2011 Giants, who somehow missed the playoffs anyhow.

But your post is about Zack Wheeler, and Zack's status as a San Francisco first rounder has earned you five points and pulled you within seven points of the lead!!

Your bonus question: Which first round, before 2017, produced the lowest average career bWAR among all draftees?

Philip Humber

Ashcroft gets on the board with Humbelina, who threw one complete game in his whole career and it was a perfecto!

Your bonus question: Which team, besides the Mets, drafted and signed the most future Mets in the first round?

My next guess: Tom Veryzer!

Veryzer well done! The Detroit Tigers made Tom the #11 overall pick in 1971, and hat's five points for you and 37 years after his last game (and seven years after his early death), TV is still helping win games, garnering five points for you and boosting you out of the cellar into seventh place, where all the cool kids hang out.

Your bonus question: How many players drafted in the first round by the Mets retired without ever playing for them?

We've got to at least get our Sandy Alderson #1's all on the board and Brandon was Sandy's #1 #1! Three points for you! This pulls you away from the field and toward the leaders, giving you some breathing room in sole possession of third!

Your bonus question: Who ended George Brett's 30-game hitting streak in 1980?

Ummm.... Goose Gossage?

Nope. Nor Al Shirley, Bart Shirley, Shirley Jackson, Goose Gozzo, Goose Goslin, Goose Tatum, or Geese Ausbie.

Questions on the board for Frayed Knot, Chad ochoseis, ashie62, and Marshmallowmilkshake.

Out of the basement!

Your bonus question: How many players drafted in the first round by the Mets retired without ever playing for them?

Making some assumptions here, I'm guessing you are saying guys who went to the minors but didn't get to the majors with the Mets, as opposed to guys like Kumar Rocker, who didn't play at all in the Mets system --which would be a trick question.

So, in 56 years, knowing most of these guys with the Mets don't make it, I'm guessing 30 of the 56.
