batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 Javy Baez quoted in Tbe Athletic: ... with a two-run homer, delivered a two-thumbs down salute in celebration, then revealed that the gesture, which has caught on with teammates, was an overt message to Mets fans who have chosen to boo the team's recent performance.“To let them know,” Báez said, “that when we don't get success, we're gonna get booed, so they're gonna get booed when we get success.”There was more. When first asked about the gesture, Báez explained that it stemmed from “the boos that we get.” When asked to expand, he clarified that the boos do not actually bother him; they just irked him enough that he felt motivated to boo back.“You know, we're not machines, we're gonna struggle,” he said. “We're gonna struggle seven times out of 10, and it just feels bad when I strike out and I get booed. It doesn't really get to me, but I want to let them know: When we have success, we're gonna do the same thing, to let them know how it feels. Because if we win together, we're gonna lose together. And the fans are a really big part of it.”
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 I agree with that. He's kind of painting some abstractions on his canvass and expecting the viewer to give him the benefit of the doubt and is surprised that they're interpreting the abstractions in such a negative way.Maybe this guy has an opinion.[fimg=600]https://ftw.usatoday.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/90/2017/09/screen-shot-2017-09-20-at-10-29-32-am.jpg?w=1000&h=600&crop=1[/fimg]

I think it's nothing more than nonsense, but Baez doesn't know that and truly believes he's making an intelligent remark. To your point, though, athletes are accustomed to journalists sanitizing their quotes, cleaning up the bad grammar and contriving to ascribe profound insights to absolute nonsense like what Baez spouted above.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 I just don't see how this ends well. When players 'boo' the fans, the fans are just going to say "Oh yeah?" and boo even louder. Plus, they'll be booing GOOD things that happen, if they see that sign from a player.Wonder if Steve Cohen is having buyer's remorse these days.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 Of things that don't sit well with me this year, Baez' remarks barely make the list. Dumb jocks who say dumb things will always be a part of every Mets team. Not every Mets team had its keystone combo duke it out in the dugout, bullshit about why it happened, and get away with it. Not every Mets team has its GM suggest they aren't listening to the advice of coaches or trainers and get away with it.

This sort of attention and discussion is like crack to him. It's why he still traded for him after deciding to punt the season, and instead of a less flashy guy.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 “I didn't mean to offend anybody,” [baez] said outside of the Mets dugout. “This is something that I've done in the past against the other team. I did it in LA to the dugout. I might [have said] something wrong about how I was booing the fans, and I really meant to [say] like, ‘Boo me now' -- and not to the fans -- to our dugout because I've done it with the other team and against other teams. "I've never seen the same fans and I didn't say the fans are bad. I love the fans. But I just felt like we were alone. The fans obviously want us to win, and they pay our salary, like everybody says. But we want to win, too. The frustration got to us, and I didn't mean to offend anybody, and if I did offend anybody, we apologize.”Baez added he's “not surprised” about the social media whirlwind that has been created around the team now. He says he understands the frustration fans might have toward the initial comments, and added “other comments for my comment has been crazy.”But the Mets still have an entire month to play. And though they've created a giant hole to dig themselves out of if they wish to even sniff the postseason, Baez says the team is trying to be unified through the off-the-field issue that he created.https://sny.tv/articles/mets-javier-baez-apologizes-to-fans-for-thumbs-down-commentshttps://sny.tv/articles/mets-javier-baez-apologizes-to-fans-for-thumbs-down-comments
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 Gary talking about the bigger picture of the insular nature of social media and twitter, the constant, toxic vitriol that has become commonplace, and how players can easily form an us-against-the-world viewpoint when online or zoom interactions become the norm during covid times. I think an extension of that is selfish entitlement we see more and more of every day, anonymous people on the internet spouting vile shit they'd never say in public (but now, sadly, they do). The world sucks.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 we can talk about it tonight perhaps (though I don't really want to dwell on this nonsense)But I think that's a small part of it. If it was really "us vs them", the 10 or so guys that aren't vaccinated would've done so for their teammates.

The world sucks. This is precisely the kind of situation that I argued with Ceetar about last year when he basically dismissed the media ban as insignificant or a net positive. And why I'm sensitive to casual and lazy remarks about Peter Gammons or whatever. It's crucial to our understanding. Of course the previous 4 years demonstrated as much wrt Trump's pretend dismissal of the media that took hold with stupid followers in this country.

I got caught up in the heat of the moment, but I want to make it clear now that Mets fans are the dregs of the MLB, they deserve nothing, and I hope every single one of them dies a horrible, painful death.” At press time, Báez had tweeted a message of unity that both players and fans should be united in directing their ire towards the cowardly, short-sighted Mets management.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 well, my main point was that THE MEDIA SHOULD BE ASKING ABOUT VACCINATION STATUS, every day. constantly. Them not being at 85% is directly related to not being able to invite the press in closer.I'm not sure how that changes this particular story. The media would've asked the same questions in person as they did on Zoom, though maybe the kid isn't there. (And like, I'm pro players being able to hold their kid after the game and maybe talk to the media in a designated spot) Báez would've said the same thing.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 Why would you care what the media asks anyone when your standing position is that they just make up what they report anyway?
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 they don't make up what they report, they make up the narrative and then report the quotes that fit said narrative. Like, they think the Mets should sign X free agent, so they poke around until they find someone to confirm that that's a good idea, and then report "someone close to the Mets thinks X free agent is a good fit" and then gets a bunch of clicks. It's leading reporting, it's garbage.
