I saw some tweet this morning stating that this was the 4th time that the Mets were in first in the division on the morning of the deadline by 3.5+ games. 1986, 1988 and 2006 were the previous years (all first place finishes). I haven't fact checked, but it seems right.



How can they not find pieces to push through the finish line if that is the case?

Traded for Edwin Nunez and signed FA Bob McClure a couple of weeks before hand. 2006 A Night In Miami Whatever plans Omar Minaya had were scrapped when word came of Duaner Sanchez' cab ride accident. Xavier Nady was sent to Pittsburgh for pen depth in Roberto Hernandez, as well as starter Xavier Nady

I just meant in general...not that those teams didn't also make moves. How could the 2021 team not find pieces? That's what I meant.

Didn't mean anything by it, I was just regurgitating the historical data of moves those Met teams made on the 7/30 non-waiver deadline.

Definitely a sad day -- this is the core of a team that won the Cubs a world championship after more than a century of futility, after all -- but I think it was clear enough for a while that a rebuild was in order and this day was coming.
