smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 I doubt there's 'demands' going on, but it's The Post. It's not a "demand" in the sense that Lindor might be stomping his feet, raising his voice, making threats and throwing an all-around tantrum as he asks for what he's askin' for. It's a contract term. Lindor's request for an amount of money is "a demand" in the language of contracts. "Offer' is self-explanatory. So you've got an offer and a demand. And when the offer and demand are the same, that'll lead to a contract.Exactly. Lindor is not demanding whole lot more than I'm comfortable with giving him. Assuming Cohen feels the same way, I don't see why meeting him in the middle won't get it done to both sides' satisfaction.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 30, 2021 Author Posted March 30, 2021 It's hard for a fan to see it from this point of view, but management tends to hold more cards than the player at this point. But man, that Fernando Tatis deal really futzes up the calculus.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 Steve would still like to hire him for the long haul.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 Funny, that tweet sounds as if Lindor has his "final offer" from Stevie
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 The Mets offer is fair. I hope he signs too.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 31, 2021 Author Posted March 31, 2021 There are other ways to close gaps besides tacking on money and years. One can bump up the opt-out date by a year, or one can add the ever-popular vesting option. Incentive bonuses are a possibility also.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 or you could whine on Twitter.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 31, 2021 Author Posted March 31, 2021 I would probably skip that step.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 Could Francisco Lindor be the Best All-Around Mets Player Ever? - The New York TimesHernandez and Strawberry. Reyes and Wright. Lindor?Francisco Lindor hasn't committed to the Mets beyond this season, but he has the talent and track record to match up with the best all-around players in franchise history.Excerpt:In six seasons with Cleveland, Francisco Lindor showcased a multifaceted set of skills that, packaged underneath an irrepressible passion and an enchanting smile, combined to make him one of the most exciting, charismatic and winning players in baseball.Beginning Thursday, Lindor will put that total package on display for the Mets, with a chance to do something even more profound. Given his age, talent and apparent dedication to the sport, and provided he eventually signs with the club long term, Lindor, 27, has a chance to become the best all-around position player the Mets have ever had.“He could exceed them all,” said Bobby Valentine, who since 1977 has played, coached, managed and been a television analyst for the Mets. “His toolbox has the best set of tools, I think, of anyone who has ever played for the Mets.”Mike Piazza hit the ball farther and had a better batting average, but was not a top-notch defender or runner. Carlos Beltran was the best free-agent signing in franchise history, but he broke down some after his first four years with the team. Darryl Strawberry hit the ball to the moon, and had the speed to steal bases, but he was less consistent at the plate and could not match Lindor's defense.Jose Reyes had the speed and the smile, David Wright put up some top-tier years and Keith Hernandez had an undeniable all-around impact on the 1986 championship team.[***]Ron Darling, the former Mets pitcher turned broadcaster, said Hernandez was the best he ever played with. Hernandez's rare combination of offensive and defensive skills, plus his unparalleled knowledge of the game, instincts, performance in clutch situations and his standing as an admired teammate, made Hernandez stand apart.“Lindor has those qualities,” said Darling, who has watched Lindor play since he first came to the big leagues in 2015. “He has to stick around and do it, but there is the opportunity for Lindor to one day go into the Hall of Fame in a Mets hat. That could happen, that's how good he is.”The statistics already shimmer on Lindor's Baseball Reference page, tantalizing Mets fans who see him as the foundation of the future, as long as the Mets can sign him to a contract extension, either now or at the end of the season....[FIMG=555]https://static01.nyt.com/images/2021/03/31/sports/31mlb-lindor-86/merlin_53899824_ae7108d6-87dc-45a4-8226-d81478597490-superJumbo.jpg?quality=90&auto=webp[/FIMG]Read it all at https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/31/sports/baseball/francisco-lindor-mets.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/31/sports/baseball/francisco-lindor-mets.html
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 It would be more fun to think about this kind of stuff if we knew he was going to be sticking around.I just hope he doesn't start hearing good things about the Denver public school system.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 31, 2021 Author Posted March 31, 2021 If you thinky about it, the well timed period of excellence of Denver Public Schools is probably the best stroke of luck the Mets have had since the Seaver lottery.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 Let's not forget Whitey Herzog's disdain for Keith Hernandez.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 Let him ask Jose Reyes how he felt about his decision to take more money from the Marlins and end up miserable in Florida, Colorado, Toronto, etc., all for just trying to max out on value.

I have no idea. Maybe the Mets had Wright higher up on their board --- but they drafted Wright second only because they thought that Wright would, likely, still be available.Just spitballin'.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 fuck that Carlos Beltran slander.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 I know it's probably sour grapes but read there was some concerns around Lindors effort last year in Cleveland. I try and remind myself of these incidents among the barrage of "best ever" stories that invariably accompany the new guy/rookie

Maybe they should've just given him a day or two off instead.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 You may think it's just a joke that Steve Cohen pisses away 60 million like it's nothing to him, but like, he bought a fucking mylar balloon bunny for 91 million.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 He's worth about $15 billion. You could steal $100M from Cohen and he wouldn't even notice without scrutinizing his statements. He can buy anything he wants. Jeez. $30M a year for Lindor to Cohen is like pizza pie money to me and you.Oh, and Cohen can sign Lindor and bemoan letting Bauer get away all at the same time, which was my original main point a little while ago in the Bauer Douchebag thread.Walk. And chew gum. And walk. And chew gum.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2021 Posted April 3, 2021 Doesn't sit on the money. 29/105/.288.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2021 Posted April 3, 2021 Whatever Lindor does won't be enough for a good chunk of Mets fans unless he wins the triple crown.I predict Lindor won't disappoint me. Is there any other team going into 2021 with a better middle infield combo, at least on paper, than the Mets duo of McNeil and Lindor?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 3, 2021 Author Posted April 3, 2021 I think Tatis and Cronenworth in San Diego are probably the main competition.Bichette and Biggio in Toronto are comers as well, with even more name power.I'd probably go Mets though. San Diego, Toronto, and the Yankees all follow. Dodgers after that. Hard to tell how much should be made of Gleyber Torres' lousy 2020. Also hard to tell how much to dock Correa and Altuve for being Astros.
