As much excitement over an in-season position player callup as I can remember in the 2010s. Seemed on the brink of a breakthrough to match the hype at several junctures. The walkoff HR at MFYS III destined to live on in Metsian trivia.

Did not supplant Mookie as the No. 1 No 1. Thought there was a chance.

Had some really good stretches and some really bad ones. The talent is definitely there. I don't think the Mets waited overly long for the consistency to materialize, but Francisco Lindor was available.

We were in Denver for his MLB debut, which was exciting to see even though I think he fouled out, whiffed, made an error, and the Mets got walked-off on ineffective bullpenning.

Probably wouldn't have hurt his career giving him a few more months to percolate in the minors but I was probably with everyone else anxious to see him.

He had kind of a weird style defensively, odd arm angle when he threw, and never really seemed comfortable with his relative gangliness despite knowing he was a good athlete, not a "classic" aesthetic at all. That bothered me a little about him, as did the terrible beard he never shaved even after I asked him to like 100 times here. Did not properly embody the No. 1 type. Would have made a better 11, or maybe 15.

All that said I wouldn't put a 25 homer/decent D year past him, he showed us a few times he could do it

Never lived up to the hype he had as a prospect but I loved watching him play anyway. When he first game up he seemed like one of those teens that had a growth spurt and wasn't really sure how long his limbs were. He was so young it might have been true.

Class act. Happy guy. Never grumbled once about getting benched for Rosario. Still think he'll be really good someday.

But not at walking. He'll never get that.

He went out with class. He didn't burn his bridges.

“To the New York Mets Organization thank you for taking a chance with a 16 yr old kid from Santo Domingo and giving me the opportunity to do what I love."

“To all Mets fans, you will always have a place in my heart, New York is truly amazing. I gave you my all each and everyday I stepped in Citi Field."

“Thank you for EVERYTHING from the bottom of my heart !”

I have a feeling that Rosario will prosper in Cleveland...he's from the old school DR reputation of "You can't walk off the island"; which never fit with Sandy's mindset of taking a lot of pitches...and usually when he took a pitch, it was called a strike anyhow...so in trying to fit in with the Mets philosophy started by Sandy, it just screwed with his ebb and flow in the batters box...IMO, he's got more talent than he showed in a Mets uniform and hopefully his talent will start to show a little more when he's not under the microscope so much...defensively, I don't know what happens to him...I was real curious to see him try 3rd or the OF, but that never happened.

He looked a lot better in the outfield than Reyes did.

Maybe.

NYP: Former Mets shortstop Amed Rosario's first game in center field resembled a bloopers scene from the baseball comedy “Major League.”

He committed three errors in three innings during Cleveland's 17-8 loss Thursday to the Los Angeles Angels.

Rosario managed two singles in Thursday's game, but he dropped two balls in center field and also made an errant throw to second base,

leading to eight unearned runs with AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber on the mound.

I feel bad for the guy. Went from top prospect to suspect to throw-in in the Gimenez trade to hapless outta position flop in just a coupla years.

Seems like a guy whose best shot now is some other team's SS getting hurt

For, like 15 minutes, he was THE top prospect. And coincidentally enough, the guy he most got compared to (though probably less than expertly) was Francisco Lindor.

The two lessons I learned were that:

(1) There's a reason they don't historically track tall, lanky ectomorphic guys toward shortstop. No matter how fast you are, it just takes a lot of mechanics to get your hands close to the ground, or to dextrously extend them in any particular direction.

(2) Encouraging José Reyes to mentor your top prospects also may be a suspect idea.
