With the Colorado Rockies open to trading superstar third baseman Nolan Arenado, the Mets are reportedly high on their list of teams too engage in discussions.

"The team that I am watching very carefully -- that I was told even this week is the team the Rockies want to engage with -- is the New York Mets," Jon Morosi reported Wednesday morning on MLB Network.

The idea of getting rid of Cano and replacing him with Arenado and putting McNeil at second is enticing. But the Mets would have to find a centerfielder to replace Nimmo who is included in the deal mentioned.

Ironically, Cano's suspension might make his contract more desirable to other teams.

I wouldn't consider dealing one of Smith/Alonso/Nimmo/Conforto before I had a quality centerfielder in my pocket. And after that, I would still have to think I was getting back more value than I was giving up, factoring contracts into consideration. Plus there are free agents available who could satisfy our need in the infield without costing us players.

That being said, Arenado is as good a defender at his position as anybody in baseball right now. And he's also a good bounceback candidate with the bat.

So I'm listening if they call, but I'm not giving ground until/unless I really like what I hear.

And you'd always want to factor in the Coors factor as a factor in your decision: OPS H=985, R=793

I mean the road number is still good, but we're unlikely to see the home figure and will instead get something south of his overall humber of 890

Turns 30 in April, signed thru 2026 (age 35) but with an opt-out following 2021 (iow: only one season guaranteed) at north of $30mi/yr

Arenado may or may not be great. I'd have to look at the splits and the analytics to know more. But he is certainly expensive. Prohibitively so. He also has a stupid contract. The team that trades for him has no security that he will stay, nor will they have any security that he will leave. Imagine trading yourself into the downside of either scenario.

A player one year away from free agency doesn't have much value. Arenado is older than most of those players, more expensive than all of them, and is the only one that will cripple you for years financially if he suddenly falls off a cliff or gets injured.

The contract is an albatross.

His value, including the contract, is negative when you consider his unilateral ability to opt out.

If Arenado would "opt in" as part of the trade... The contract still makes it hard to trade quality playets for.

I would offer some C level prospects at best and if they say no they can keep that contract.

This is right. If they want anyone of value, they better be ready to take Cano.

Of course Cano has a no trade.

Yeah I suppose if they take Cano we can raise the bar to giving them a not-useless player. Let them try to rehab Matz maybe? or Davis?

The point of having all of Cohen's Cash available is that we'll take a good player on a bad contract - but only if the 'trade' is relieving the other team of the salary obligation. good young players should only be getting traded for good young players.

Outside of last year, Arenado has consistently posted an OPS+ in the neighborhood of 130. That's about an .830 OPS at Citi, which is nothing to sneeze at coming from the best defensive third baseman in baseball, but it's also not spectacular.

We can totally afford to walk away from the table. They might not. I see no point in giving until it hurts, or even giving until it itches. I'd offer Cano, Betances, and Matz. If they want one of Alonso/Smith/Nimmo/Conforto, they'd better be throwing in German Marquez.

On his way to St. Louis with $50 million to deliver to the Cardinals.

Think about that. Colorado gave St. Louis $50M to take Arenado.

Seattle gave Brodie $20 million for Cano.

I would have insisted on them taking Cano and throwing in Marquez. The latter might have been a deal-breaker, but the Rockies are in win-no-time-soon mode, and the names MLB Trade Rumors were throwing around suggest that the Cardinals did not up any of their three prospects in MLB.com's top 50.

I keep thinking the title of this sounds like the first line to a rap from around 1986.

Let's talk about a Nolan not named Ryan!

  The Colorado Rockies be divestifyin'!

He fields like Brooks and hits like Matthews!

So the Cards went and got 'im even though they didn't have to!

Though he says he loves Jesus and rejects the Devil!

There are some who think he sucks at sea level!

We can start another thread about Charlie O'Brien

Or we can talk about a Nolan NOT NAMED RYAN!!

The Colorado "good gets" are likely A guys Luken Baker & Aaron Gomber

Luken Baker is a 6'4 280 lb 23 year old who does not hit HR's.

Colorado is out from under.

Financially speaking, yes, but from a competitive standpoint they are probably done until the 2030s.

And for the $50M they are paying the Cardinals, I hope the Cardinals' owner at least treats the Rockies' owner to playoff tickets.

Marc Carig on the Arenado deal:

Dysfunction comes in many forms, though even through the thin air of Colorado, its odor is unmistakable. And now that the Wilpon Mets are in the history books, baseball might have a new standard-bearer for the most inept franchise.

Colorado definitely has that Wilponian feeling. Could you imagine the Mets feuding with David Wright and trading him a year after signing his extension, and sending 50 million away with him to boot?? the Rockies just did that. I couldn't even see the Mets in the darkest days of Madoff doing that.
