An all-star several years ago, coming off a crap year, big guy who doesn;t throw very hard, known for his change-up.

We've got a winner if he can only reverse the career-low velocity and K/9, and the career-high ERA, FIP, xFIP and SIERA. On the bright side, he will make $9M.

Wheeler/Vargas wound up 17-13 with an ERA right about 4.00 in 2019. Their combined WHIP ~ 1.26; BB/9 ~ 2.8; K/9 between 8 & 9; and HR/9 a bit over 1.0

That's what gets me about the Mets. It's like they try to get an average guy with something to prove as a 5th starter, and never seem to consider that getting 4 No. 1s and a No. 2 would be a better solution.



There's nothing wrong with having a few average guys with something to prove, but maybe they need to be the last resort and the first.



Anyway, word is Wacha took the deal to sing for his supper both this year and in next year's FA market. He is getting just $3M but with incentives up to $10M and of course hits the market again next year at 29 so still channce for him. Not hating on him or the Mets for that.

it's junk change. They absolutely shouldn't hardwire him to a rotation spot (though I'm sure they implied it to him, and anyone else they're slow playing), but in it of itself? Whatever. It looks like it's been control issues (walk issues at any rate ,without digging deeper) the last two years for the most part. If they think they can address that? great, he's league averagish to slightly better.

Wacha's slowball is his fastball. Also, the incentive clause is that the Mets'll pay Wacha whatever Gerrit Cole's making if Wacha fans 600 batters in 2020. Plus, the Mets were all set to sign Cole until Sandy Alderson put a gun to Fred's head and threatened to pull the trigger unless the Mets instead signed Wacha.



It's Michael Cuddyer all over again. To tell you the truth, the only Mets news I'm looking for these days is stuff about Steve Cohen. And more anecdotes about how much Katz's kids think Jeff Wilpon is a dick. Because that Kaz Matsui story can't possibly be the only one.

Tensions between Jeff Wilpon and his relatives have been brewing for years. Many of them work with Sterling Equities, the family's closely held umbrella company, but the baseball team, which last won a World Series in 1986 — before the family took full control — was largely Jeff's domain.



For years, some family members have questioned his choices behind the scenes.



In 2003, for example, Jeff and his father called on Jeff's younger brother, Bruce, who is fluent in Japanese, to help pursue the free-agent infielder Kazuo Matsui.



Soon after Matsui joined the Mets in 2004 and reported to spring training, he injured his finger. Jeff Wilpon was adamant that Matsui play in televised spring training games to build excitement for the season after a last-place finish a year earlier. Bruce was more protective of Matsui and urged caution.



The disagreement came to a head when Jeff, seeing a promotional opportunity, wanted Matsui on the field. Bruce pushed back. The argument grew heated and ugly, as Jeff dug in. After that, Bruce rarely, if ever, was involved with the team again.



Such accounts of the family and its decision to sell are based on interviews with more than a dozen people with direct involvement with the Wilpon family and the Mets, nearly all of whom asked not to be identified so as not to damage their relationship with the family. Through a spokesman, Fred and Jeff Wilpon declined to comment.
