G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2019 Author Posted October 3, 2019 Release...METS RELIEVE MICKEY CALLAWAY OF HIS DUTIES FLUSHING, N.Y., October 3, 2019 – The New York Mets today announced that they have relieved Manager Mickey Callaway of his duties, effective immediately. “We want to thank Mickey for his consistent work ethic and dedication over the last two seasons and I'm certain these characteristics will serve him well in his next opportunity,” Mets Executive Vice President & General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen said. “A decision like this is never easy, however, we believe it is in the best interest of the franchise at this time.” Callaway posted a 163-161 (.503) record during his two seasons with the Mets. Callaway was named the Mets 21st manager in club history on October 23, 2017.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2019 Author Posted October 3, 2019 In the fall of 2017, if we were told this Callaway guy is going to get the Mets off to a sizzling start in his first year, like ten games above .500 immediately, and have them finishing super strong in his second year, like twenty games above .500 after the All-Star break, we'd believe ourselves to have been catapulted into Davey Johnson territory.Sadly, the middle of what became a limited tenure told the more telling tale.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 I'm pleased. I'm also glad that they let him finish the season, rather than appoint an interim manager whose tenure only lasts three or four games.

Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 Well, not a surprise. Mickey was in over his head during the game. They brought Riggleman in this year and it didn't get better.Potential hires would already be aware of the 'Wilpon factor', so I wouldn't expect a big name to take the job. A guy like Girardi would probably last until mid-April.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 former players coming out of the woodwork to twitter-petition for the job. (Beltran has not petitioning himself I believe)I've seen Schoenweis and Lo Duca so far. I could probably see Scott being good put would pass on Paul. I'm also not so much a Girardi guy but I guess I could be convinced.
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 If they're looking to hire someone who won't be inclined to curse out or fight reporters, Paul Lo Duca may not be their guy.Every time I see A. J. Hinch's name, I think, "Is this that guy who does those gimmicky lifestyle experiments in order to write medium-entertaining airport nonfiction, like living biblically or reading the Britannica a-to-z?" But, no, that's A.J. Jacobs, who is a different human being. Which is probably good, because it would probably be hard to memorize everybody on the roster AND personally thank everybody in the supply chain that led to his morning cup of coffee, all at once.Outside of the ones we've already discussed... Cone is weirdly intriguing to me.The Wilpon thing will be a hump to get over, I think, but not as big of an impediment-- you'd think-- as it is to getting good GM candidates.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 I've met Cookie Rojas a number of times and he is really nice!Cue BatMags going off on what a bad guy Rojas is...Well, I would if I knew. But the last thing I remember about this guy is that he was a Mets coach at the same time Mookie Wilson was also a coach, going back about 20 years and those hideous black uniforms. What I mostly remember is that if you saw Cookie's first name --"Cookie" -- spelled out, you'd figure it rhymes with Mookie, which is spelled just like Cookie except for a different first letter. But Cookie and Mookie don't rhyme.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 Kooky Rojas would work. I think I last saw him broadcasting on a Spanish channel?
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 how a manager treats or cares about the beat pool is like the 943rd concern for a manager imo.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 Maybe, but how he handles himself isn't.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 The ghost of Gary Carter also expressed an interest, but that was back in June.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 In the 1999 Playoffs against Arizona Cookie Rojas was coaching 3rd base and was in the umps face with total fire a good five minutes. I would be happy with a Rojas hireBrodie can be relived of his duties also

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 I rarely agree with Wilpon/Brodie, so I feel it's important to point out when I do.Canning Mickey and Riggleman are good moves. So is publicly coming out in support of Noah and Diaz.
