That Knight picture is poorly captioned. How could a homer in the seventh "win" the World Series, or even the game, for the Mets?



One might just as easily say Jesse Orosco won the game by stopping the Sox rally in the top of the eighth, collecting an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, and then finishing off the save in the ninth.

Gonna go with cover over event in this case, despite CF's suggesting that anything that says Mets Win World Series is automatically awesome (which it is). Of course a magazine that features the Mets winning the World Series is not only special but rare, but the presentation is a touch underwhelming. I admire the specificity of capturing the aftermath of the big blow, but the excitement and enormity of this powerhouse team capturing the championship that nearly eluded them doesn't feel best summed up by Ray Knight high-fiving the batboy, Rich Gedman's dismay notwithstanding. Had the Red Sox put the Series away in five, they planned to feature the Lakers and Jack Nicholson as their cover subjects (for the NBA preview) and isolate the World Series result above the flag. Maybe they weren't prepared for the turn of events.



I thought RIP CITY was a fantastic cover, hitting the mark in the moment as SI would, a la the Best Infield Ever treatment seven years before. The 2006 Mets were the 1986 Mets, Jr., at that stage and their surge was all about those five guys. "Captain Red Ass" was a daring choice for a coverline as well, prudish country that we are.

I went with the 73 WS. Not often you get a cover shot of a guy sliding into first base. Plus, classic Oakland unis, and John Milner with the flip shades, all very 1973

It also contrasts with the 1986 cover in that it's daytime excitement.
