I'm delighted with that Millan cover, but his face looks all touched up or rendered in poor resolution, and that pushed me toward Casey 2.0.

The Millan issue was my first Baseball Digest. And after that, I was hooked. What a fantastic little publication that was!

Melting Pot Mets for me.

I loved Baseball Digest, but its SI by a slight margin in this contest.

And, I'm going to try to stay away from voting for any cover with an MFY logo on it. (even though Yogi became a Met)

I'm going for Keith and Will.

Reminds me of the 80s and for a time Hernandez-Clark was a good debate. I liked both guys a lot back then though it was before I fully understood what a tool Clark could be irl. Both guys on that cover could probably be HOFers but aren't.

Fun Will Clark Facts:

* Broke Rusty Staub's home run record at Jesuit High in Louisiana.

* Homered off Nolan Ryan on the first pitch he saw in the majors.

* Was a college teammate of Rafael Palmeiro -- they'd combine for more than 800 home runs as MLB first basemen. Palmeiro left the Rangers pissed that they'd spoken to Clark when both were free agents.

* Homered 2X off Greg Maddux and drove in 6 runs in Game 1 of the '89 NLCS

Tough one. I see what you mean about Felix's face now that I'm done ogling that body. Will Clark smiling is different. And yes, though I didn't vote Casey in round one, I do LOVE him, and Yogi.

Very tough choice.

Mix Master is a great cover story.

Hmm, can't decide yet.

Was the baseball battle for NY a serious thing in 1964? From what I can tell, the Yankees finished first, and the Mets finished last. So, uh, not much of a battle.

I echo JCL's thoughts on Keith/Clark. I remember seeing that cover on newstands.

But for me, I like Omar and company.

I'm guessing (from the cover) that the story had to do with creating a diverse team and not that the guys pictured were the elite players on that team. You have Latinos, a white guy and a brother. I'm disappointed couldn't get an Asian on the team, but it looks like the only Asian Met of 2007 was one start from Chan Ho Park.

It was post-Koo, pre Igarashi/Takahashi.

The orange border complementing Felix's blue did the trick for me. A national magazine adjusting its specs for the Mets is respect.

Casey-Yogi couldn't be more photogenic, though that uniform on Berra is kind of a dealbreaker here. Yogi was 38 at the time, yet appeared not that far removed from Casey's demographic.

I get the feeling Keith's agent had to convince him to pose for Sport. When he showed up, he had to be reminded it wasn't Sports Illustrated. I'd definitely be delighted to find that issue offered on a flight.

Not pictured on the 2007 SI cover: Joe Smith. He was photographed, spread out on the floor, head resting on fist, but they cropped the kid.

Clark's like a generation removed from Keith, baseball-wise, though, isn't he? The parallel doesn't work for me. I'm more likely to associate Clark with Mark Grace, Wally Joyner, and/or Andres Gallaraga. Keith's contingent would be Bill Buckner and Steve Garvey. Maybe Darrell Evans or John Mayberry.

John Maine's smile is kinda smackable, isn't it?

That refers to a multi-part article on bridge. Goren is Charles Goren, the legendary bridge player and bridge writer who also invented a system or methodology for playing bridge. This was still, technically, the early 60s, and although SI, by then, was covering in large part, what we conider the hard core sports, SI hadn't yet completely transitioned out of its original format as a purveyor, more often than not of genteel and country club, high society sports.

Bridge journalism is from a world and a time that overlaps with my own, but damn, it is something I am entirely unfamiliar with.
