"Oh Michael, you can never lose your family" -- Mama Corleone (Part II)

Pending a physical (yadda, yadda) Jeurys Familia and the Mets reached a three year agreement for the reliever to return to the team that dealt him away last August,
presumably to serve in a set-up role to newly-acquired Edwin Diaz.

And we don't have to give back Will Toffey or Bobby Wahl or the $1 million in int'l bonus pool money.

Unexpected. The only drawback is that he is not lefthanded. Do you think that they could still be in on Miller?

I love it. Arguably the best relief pitcher we have ever had. Home grown kid. Only 29 years old. Compared to the deal the older Kimbrel is supposedly looking for this is a good bargain.

Like any relief pitcher, it comes with risks, but I think this is a solid bet. Love that he is ok with being a setup man and that the addition of Diaz didn’t deter him. We still need a lefty or two but this is shaping into a potentially great pen.

Inevitably some reporter will get this wrong. He doesn’t have a domestic violence taint. He was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and then a court affirmatively ruled that none had occurred.

Now that the Mets have two 50-save guys in their bullpen, they're guaranteed to win 100 games this year. Right?

That adds up for me, too.
And don't forget the 20 complete game victories when they won't need a closer.

I think I'm on record somewhere saying that if the Mets were going to be dumb and throw money at a relief pitchers it may as well be Familia.

I like it enough.

This deal is a bargain in that for the cost of one reliever, they receive multiple pronunciations.

I've always liked Familia. He was betrayed by his defense more than his fair share, but he remained solid for us. I do agree with Mex that an established lefty would be nice, though.

Kind of like Jay Bruce last season -- returning after a rental!

He and Bruce create a new category: Ricochet Mets.

How many guys besides those two were resigned immediately after being dealt in their walk year? Can't be too many, although honorary status has to to go to Greg McMichael.

I asked this when Bruce was re-signed and someone mentioned Aroldis Chapman.

This is a great signing. Familia and Diaz will lock down the 8th and 9th. They can now just stockpile relievers to fill out the bullpen. which will address one of the team's biggest problems.

I like it well enough, provided the infield defense is much better over the next 3 years.

I think I'd rather have Miller at this price, or two years of Happ (a la the guys across town).

Rather than assign one guy the eighth and one the ninth, I prefer a team that looks to just one of those guys as needed for both the eighth and the ninth, with the other guy backing him up for an emergency, and if they're in another situation that needs a lockdown the next night, the other guy gets the call.

It wouldn't work out this way, of course, but I'd prefer each guy get 40 appearances of two innings each, rather than 80 appearances of one inning each. It's probably less taxing and leaves the manager with an ace up his sleeve.

Edgy for manager.

I like that idea too, but it seems to be too outside-the-box for today's managers.

I think Familia will get more than a few save opportunities. There will be days when Diaz has been used two or three days in a row and then, if he's fresh, Jay-or-reese will be the designated closer for that day.

Joe Kelly just went to LA for 3/25. Would you guys have rather had a less-proven-but-apparently-on-the-rise guy (and one a little less defense-dependent) for that price?

Kelly is actually almost two years older than Familia, and not as good. No.

Frank Lary was traded to Milwaukee in 1964 and then purchased back from them in 1965.
Is that a sub-category?

It feels so weird to be happy about a Mets transaction. I can't remember the last time I felt that way.

Other than re-signing Cespedes a bunch of times, I can't remember being happy about a trade or signing. I didn't like any of the Bruce/Vargas crap from last year. Maybe trading to get Addison Reed? I must be forgetting someone right?

On Edit: The Niese for Walker trade. I liked that one.

And, of course, the patron saint of all ricochet Mets is Harry Chiti.

He ricocheted away in the other direction. Another category? :)

Bordick indeed got the flock back to the Orioles ASAP.

Assuming Familia is used early in the 2019 season, his absence should measure sixth-shortest among Recidivist Mets. The Mets have played 69 games since his last pre-departure appearance with them. Shorter absences between terms:

Greg McMichael (32 games)
Kirk Nieuwenhuis (45 games)
Jay Bruce (52 games)
Kelly Johnson (60 games/222 days)
Frank Lary (60 games/255 days)

Unless somebody else is brought back from our distant past, Familia looms as the 48th Recidivist Met.

Sui generis.
