Has there ever been a biopic about a band that was really good?

BUDDY HOLLY STORY
STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON
SID & NANCY
THE RUNAWAYS

and the best one...
THIS IS SPINAL TAP

AND lets not forget KISS VS THE PHANTOM

If this is a hit, and I figure it could be, I think rock biopics could become next superhero thing.

Greg Renoff's book VAN HALEN RISING is dying to be a movie just like this, you've got a larger-than-life charasmatic lead singer, in conflict with the boy genius guitarist and his hard-drinking brother, partying hearty in the late 70s in sunny California, and a boombastic soundtrack.

And theoretically the Motley Crue movie that's allegedly in production, although I don't think anyone really thinks that's going to be any sort of blockbuster.

Is this going to incorporate songs into the narrative to try to Mamma Mia it up?

Because, while I'd enjoy seeing something like a faithful dramatization of Queen's story, I'm not that interested in seeing a Queen (and I imagine it's going to be 90% Freddy) jukebox musical.

This seems a fair list, although THIS IS SPINAL TAP is cheating.

I want a Replacements movie then.

I'm certain that there will indeed be a slate of high-profile rock biopics. Rocketman is due in Summer 2019, and if they get two hits out of two, there will be so many put into development that they will still be coming out years after folks have stopped buying.

Strangely, contemporary rock 'n' roll is scarcely marketable at all, but rock 'n' roll rehashes (films, Broadway shows, wheelchair tours, hologram tours ...) couldn't be more lucrative.

Weirdly, Rocket Man and Bohemian share the same director, Dexter Fletcher (he took over after credited-but-fired Bryan Singer went AWOL midway through filming).

This one? The mixed reviews were deserved. Malek was spectacular, but he's far better than the movie, which simplifies and bowdlerizes and flattens in service of a plot that is so, so, SO conventional. There are charming and thrilling moments throughout, but they're mostly either minor or flat-out recreations of actual events (see: the closing Live Aid reenactment). A fantastic performance wasted on a skin deep "character study."

But hey-- my eight-year-old loved it.

if the film isn't successful, it will be ironic that the most popular use of "Bohemian Rhapsody" in a movie won't be in the movie "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Even if this film *is* successful, the most popular use of "Bohemian Rhapsody" in a movie was never going to be in the movie "Bohemian Rhapsody". Wayne's World has that award locked up in perpetuity.

Lousy film.

Rock Biopics, how about Stillwater in "Almost Famous"

Almost Famous, like This is Spinal Tap, is a great movie that is completely fictitious, so it doesn't qualify for biopic.

There are some really funny stories about what went wrong with this movie.

The primary thing that went wrong was that they decided to make it.

Control IS pretty great-- especially the kid who played Ian Curtis.

But... so. Anyone ever see this one?

Granted they aren’t “rock” but I thought this continues the Walk The Line/Ray era of the music artist bio pic?

Yeah, lotsa runway for this, tho.

Right now the ratio of rook biobooks to rock biomovies is huge but you gotta figure the movies are a bigger biz. Why not keep the cash registers running

My wife and I had seen no other "rock biopics" (for comparison), so we just saw when we saw, and both enjoyed it.
No poll here, but I would give it a 4 or 4 1/2 out of 5.
