G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2018 Posted September 17, 2018 Pete McCarthy and Sal Licata each tweeted the forthcoming demise of the WOR Sports Zone in light of WOR no longer having the Mets anchoring their sports programming. McCarthy has been really good in his pregame and postgame role since 2014, comparable to Howie Rose at the birth of Mets Extra. Listeners would be well-served if he travels with the Mets to WCBS as well, though CBS having other non-Mets commitments puts that in question.

Licata was a co-host on that or something? That would've turned me off anyway. I know I see him bloviating on commercials for SNY fake-debate shows, and I imagine that'll continue. Unless they drop him for McCarthy.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2018 Posted September 17, 2018 WOR bracketed the "official" pre and post, which was hosted by Wayne Randazzo (who I hope remains part of the crew), with Pete's shows. It created a nice buffer on either side against standard 710 fare, which was odious before a Mets game and deadly dull after, depending on the daypart. WCBS might not feel compelled to do as much. A half-hour pre and however long the post goes might be it, then back to the news. Can't stress enough how good Pete has been. He's one of us, in the fan sense, but a professional all the way through. Nothing gimmicky, talked like an intelligent person, handled callers with respect, didn't suffer fools gladly, never came off as a company man, well-prepared always. In the baseball radio matrix, he was an essential part of the season.Licata co-hosted occasionally and sat in on off nights. He became tolerable after a while.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted September 17, 2018 Posted September 17, 2018 oh. Perhaps I misread "The station will also provide in-depth pregame and postgame coverage." as probably hosting something similar to what Pete did.
dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 The best part of this was removing 710 from my radio presets as soon as the game ended...
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 DAMN IT. I think that Howie and Josh are great together and that Josh "gets" Howie. Why mess with good chemistry? Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Bad news, gotten quite used to him. I hate breaking in new voices.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Unless Josh wanted out, this is an idiotic decision of epic proportions.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Makes little sense, hopefully a better explanation will soon be provided.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 yeezus what a fucked up decision
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Inane bullshit. Also disdain the Randazzo limbo.Mets signed off on this. I wonder if there's a connection between new GM and some ill-advised desire for a fresh sound. Not a good way to celebrate Tom Seaver's and Seth Lugo's birthday.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 The NY Post's story is a bit more detailed and makes it seem more Lewin's decision than not.“Earlier this week, I removed myself from consideration as part of the Mets’ radio team,†Lewin told The Post. “Instead I will be accepting an offer away from New York, with details coming as soon as the contracts get signed.â€He also added that this new post would be 'better for his family'

I thought they were a strong pairing.

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2018 Posted November 18, 2018 “Better for his family†is code for “lots more money†right? If so, good for Josh. We will miss him. What a hard seat this has been to fill. We need to clone Gary.
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted November 18, 2018 Posted November 18, 2018 I wonder if he is going to the Tigers. He used to work for them, and the team just fired two of its longtime announcers after they had a fistfight after a game.He has done television in the past, and is well-liked here.I met him once. Seemed like a very nice guy.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2018 Posted November 18, 2018 It makes sense that it’s a tough job to fill because whomever takes it will be stuck in the #2 role until Howie retires (which could be 20 years from now). I had hoped Josh was that person because of his lifelong Mets fandom, but he’s not that much younger than Howie (as opposed to, say, when Gary first came aboard to work with Bob Murphy). Can’t fault him for taking more money or a bigger role (cf. Kevin Burkhardt) because there’s only so far you can rise in the ranks of Mets broadcasting.

Also, it gets him in the Fox Sports family which could mean more non-baseball work.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Damn. Josh and Howie had a chemistry in the booth. I just hope they don't screw this up. We've had the privilege of listening to a great TV booth and a great radio booth for a while now.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Josh spent a number of years here in Rochester; he grew up here and did Wings games for a number of years. I don't know if his family is still here or not.

Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Basically, his call entirely.Dammit. At this point, given the way each's skills/mike habits have trended, I would almost--almost-- have rather lost Howie.
