batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2018 Posted May 21, 2018 Great. After Bautista, maybe the Mets'll sign Keith Hernandez to play first base.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted May 21, 2018 Posted May 21, 2018 Well, he's a right handed hitter with power that has experience as a third baseman and outfielder, so he has that going for him. However, he appears to be in serious decline . He has struck out roughly 35% of the time in 2017 and 2018. The Mets already have enough swing and miss guys in their line up that can't reliably be counted on to consistently put the ball in play, I would pass (unless he would accept a minor league deal).
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 21, 2018 Posted May 21, 2018 I think he's an option if he comes at a rock bottom remainder price, which he likely would. And he'd likely be on a short enough leash. Rick Ankiel-in-2013 short. Probably shorter than that.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 He was ours, for a brief moment in 2004, then gone in a trice in the (I prefer to call it the ) Jeff Keppinger deal.Later
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 if he wants to play for Vegas for a little while its certainly possible that a team desperately lacking right-handed bench options, particularly until Frazier is back and relegates Flores there, could take a shot on this guy.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Can't be worse than Jose Reyes.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 He basically has to be better than Phillip Evans to be an upgrade. That doesn't strike me as too high of a bar. I'd still look for a righty bat that could play center, but in the meantime, why not? He does have two homers in 35 AB, and the .143 BABIP suggests that he's been a bit unlucky so far.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Ummmmm, no. The fork in his back inhibits his hitting.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 As an emergency option in LV? Sure. But I don't see any room for him on the active roster.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Well, if he was available tonight, he might be starting in leftfield in place of one of our three lefthanded outfielders, instead of Phil Evans. But hopefully, by the time he'd be ready to step in as the righthanded-batting outfielder the team is lacking, Céspedes would be back anyhow.

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 This year, it's a small sample size. But last year he had a .674 OPS throughout 157 games.I mean like, are we sure he's better than Phil Evans?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Not sure at all, but that's why they have scouts. They can makes the educated guesses.I have no idea if they are going to make this move or if it's the right one, but I imagine if they do, it'll be cheap enough that it'll really be a sort of an extra lottery ticket.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 If he does sign here, would that qualify him as a returning Met considering his 'paper Met' status for a day and a half 14 years ago?
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Someone was telling me a few years back, Bautista, who's an odd guy, "followed" a whole raft of Met-fan Twitter accounts. Didn't get around to me of course.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 He's here! Was he waiting in his car?[tweet:14s1hp7v] [/tweet:14s1hp7v]
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Major League deal? Savvy.
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 A no-risk, high reward signing. Let’s give him a try!

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Not at all excited about this ... but hoping for the best.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Desperation but whatever, worth a shot , looking forward to his first At Bat

Sure, but that's what having five different RH batters on the DL at the same time will do [Cespedes, d'Arnaud, Frazier, Plawecki, Lagares] including (at least!!) two gone for the year (waiting for the news that Frazier's hamstring issue has progressed to his kidneys and pancreas).
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 No doubt , if he helps until those guys get back that will be great, and who knows, maybe he'll catch a hot summer

The Mets didn't need him tomorrow. They need him tonight! 'Cuz they're not sleeping!
