Without a doubt or any hesitation whatsoever: JERRY GROTE I know Perez is screwing his team mates but what I saw Grote do, he did to a child. That don't sound right Ugh. I really should read and use links and stuff. Very interesting piece JCL. And the site looks great. Haven't been there for a bit.

SCHAEFER PLAYERS OF THE MONTH: MAY 2010
Zvon replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
Ben, I may have asked you this before but I can't recall. How do you get the font for the names to be so perfect? Maybe if i compared em to a real card from that year they are not exact, but they look to be. Is there a font pack with baseball card type fonts in it? Did u painstakingly look through fonts till you found and matched them? Do you work for Topps? I gots to know... Love the cards, love em. I have collected all your cards I've ever come across. Makes me feel like a kid again, which I know isn't a stretch but still. -

What happened to him had NEVER happened before in the history of the game. We all know he pitched one right now. But memories and history can be a little funny. Maybe history will treat him like Harvey Haddix, remembered for extended greatness before eventually falling short. But perhaps his name will become an asterisk to the story, if more people remember the name Jim Joyce. I am sure there were plenty of heroes for the Royals in game 6 of 1985, but I don't remember any of them. I do remember Don Denkinger, though. I think one of the Iorg brothers was involved in the final play, but I'd have to look it up. Point well taken.

Why have we been so snake bit for the last bunch of years! Did this all begin with the homer by FatAss in 2006? Someone, please point out exactly what we did to deserve all that has happened since. Ill become METRETROMAN and I'll develop the ability to go back in time and fix all this! After reading about this yesterday and Castillos other foot today I had to think WTF do we do now? Cora is what he is, and he has been over achieving in some aspects, but he is no PORNSTARMUSTACHMAN. Feel free to prove me wrong Alex. Feel very free.

I'm really sick of this whole situation. I said in a recent IGT that this is a game the Mets are also losing. Ill amend that. This is a game where everyone involved is losing. Its a shit storm and Perez is the eye of the hurricane. I don't give a fuck what they do anymore. I'll accept it as a result of how the game is now structured. During spring training I told my brother that I thought this season hinged on Perez. I was thinking in terms of him being what he can be. I did not expect this turn of events, however. Right now its obvious he can't even be close to what he was. Not throwing in the 80's. Reading Lupica, however, has made me dream. We all know that Mejia has great potential. But like an amateur magicians trick, sometimes we see it, and sometimes we don't. What if when Niese returns he does go down. And gets the innings he needs to evolve into the kind of starting pitcher I pray he can be. I know, arms are the things we need the most, but that can be worked around somehow. We all know that GMJ is wasting as much space as Perez right now. My point here is I think we can better serve Mejia's future, hopefully with us, and maybe the Gods of baseball are trying to force our hand so the future is all it should be. As far as this season goes, we may be already screwed in the now. It might be predestined. Omar must have thought it was. on edit: This was not from reading Lupica, it was an article in the Post by Andy Martino. Sorry, Mr. Martino.

The reason I have stopped voting has nothing to do with what anyone thinks, and I think this is one of the koolest things that you guys do at this sight. Maybe the koolest. I stopped because I would take it too serious in my own mind. I'd print out the stats and go over em and try to cut em up just right. It became an agonizing thing to me. If you saw my comment about my head exploding last week, it was not a total joke. But I have not been well lately. I hope when I'm feeling better I get back into this. Cause its one of the things that makes the Pool what it is.

This situation can't be reversed imo. I will also have a problem with MLB if it is. Not that I'm over my last problem that robbed us all of a World Series. Hey guys, I know that this guy has been ripped off of his place on the list of perfect game pitchers. But we ALL know he pitched one. He lost it to human error, like sometimes it goes in baseball. And it wasn't a player and it was on the last out and..... Doesn't this kinda make him more famous than anyone else on that list? What happened to him had NEVER happened before in the history of the game. Maybe he opens up a whole new category in baseball stats in this day and age. Blown calls. I doubt this one will ever be topped. Seriously though, he certainly has now become a HUGE part of baseball lore and if I were him, I might just be happy and content with that. The game is what it is and these things happen.

I'll remember him as clean. I'll always say when I tell stories of these days that he may have been the only clean player to rise to such heights. This kid was blessed, we all knew it. All he knew was that he was being payed to play the game he loved. I imagine that the perfect blunder yesterday taking the headlines made him smile, like so many things did. A pleasure and honor seeing you play Mr. Griffey Jr.

Part Two-What are your earliest memories of a Met game?

Edgy DC wrote: The only games I got to was tagging along as my dad took a bunch of inner city kids to Shea and Yankee Stadium with the Police Athletic League. The Yankee game I went to, no idea what year, was with my dad and a group from the United Firefighters Association. He doesn't remember ever taking me to any games. Understandable at his age. Makes me feel sad but also glad, because now I can tell him stories, like he did for me as a child. -

Frayed Knot wrote: I have no memory of NOT being a Met fan. I love you FK. Not carnally, but vicariously though everyone else that loves you. You do temp me to consider experimentation.... I spoke of my first memory in the other thread, the Art Shamsky broken ribs thing. The game itself was delayed for a while while they treated and carted him off, and this is the ONLY thing I remember about the game. It was the ONLY exciting thing that happened, imo-ata (at that age). I was in no way a baseball fan when I went to my 1st Yankee game or Met game. As a child I was too busy being Batman and Napoleon Solo to have time for sports. My dad took me to those games, more than likely because he thought I was spending way too much time as the caped crusader and The Man From Uncle. I think what qualifies as an interest in baseball was that the day after the Met game where Art plastered himself to the stands I picked up my dads newspaper and went to the sports section because I was curious as to what happened to him Of course, being at the game I only knew what I saw and never watched the news or sports reports. There was no ESPN. Don't know if sports radio, or sports talk radio, existed, but it probably did to some extent. But the fact that I was curious and went out of my way to followup was a sign. Thank you Mr. Shamsky for being the worm that was now on the hook. I remember this feeling of respect I had for him after seeing the play (not even sure if he held onto the ball now that I think of it). I thought, "wow, the way he flew after that ball and stuck with it..the determination... I don't think even Batman could do that. Surely not Napoleon Solo,....he would muss his hair." I still didn't follow baseball immediately following that but there was the hook. Towards the end if the 69 season, I saw these things in my peripheral vision concerning the Mets that got my attention. You all know what that was. Don't think I was able to see any of the 69 series live on TV. I heard things tho,...I heard some things. And when they won it all, and I'm talking the moment and the preceding minutes after, I was outside the lobby of where I lived with my buddy Dave and suddenly paper like confetti was sailing thru the sky from a number of surrounding apartment buildings. Maybe my mind is exaggerating this but I remember LOTs of snowfalling like stuff from the direction of 3 different buildings. I had no idea what was going on. I called out to the doorman,"Hey Sal, LOOK at this! Whats going on!" And he screamed " THE METS WON THE WORLD SERIES!" Never saw Sal with a wider smile on his face. Dave and I jumped and leaped and danced down the street like you see in some of those pictures that capture the moment though-out the city. That was the line. And you won't believe the sinker, cause its such a simple thing. I thought of the Mets over the winter, I guess cause everyone was talking about em. And I saw amazing pictures and clips of the now historical things that happened. My curiosity was building and suddenly I was looking foward to when the Mets 1970 season would start. Im gonna watch them on WOR-9, I thought to myself. Im gonna check em out. I knew that my hero Shamsky was still there because I saw him in the backround of all these photos of Tommie Agee's catch. So when the 70 season started I tuned into a game at my 1st opportunity. And here was the sinker. Right before going to Nelson,Kiner, and Murphy, WOR-9 played this lil short intro film to the tune of Meet The Mets. It was basically just a small highlight reel of the 69 series, although there might have been other clips in there. First time I ever heard Meet The Mets (i think, or at least payed it any mind), and that, coupled with Agee and Swoboda's catches, and the rest of what was shown... They got me: hook, line, and sinker. Started wanting to go to games all the time from that point on. The following year my parents allowed me to go to games unsupervised. It was just a walk thru Flushing Meadows to get there. (did take around an hour to reach the park from where I lived tho, lol. Probly half the time to reach Queens Blvd and the subway, but it never even occurred to me at that age) I'd walk to a game or two every weekend from then on. Having running catches with my buddies all the way there. -
Just saw the play. Its ashame, because everyone (ill include Leyland here cuz he did what a manager should do in this situation), aside from the tragically blown call, acted with pure class. From Gallaraga to Joyce. Esp Gallaraga. At least from what all Ive seen and heard so far. I don't think we need replay for things like this. Just better umps. (Leyland said he was a great ump tho,...I wouldn't know)

Who was managing the Mets when you first became a Met fan?
Zvon replied to batmagadanleadoff's topic in New York Mets Talk
Gil. And Ill forever use him as a yardstick to measure others from. My 1st Met game I ever went to I saw Art Shamsky try to make a great catch running from right into foul territory and into the stands/railing. He was taken off the field on a stretcher. I do believe he broke some ribs. Not at all sure of date. I'm thinking 1968. If someone can find out when that happened, that was my 1st Met game. I had already been to Yankee Stadium. Not a good experience, cuz out in right field I had a view of two things. A big steel pillar and Gates Brown's ass. -

In the days they let you go down and play on the field. My brothers and I set up these catches for the pictures, but I did dive. Before the run and dive I put the ball in the webbing of my glove so it looked like a snowcone catch. Thats from a picture slide, and I found them this weekend at a family getogether and tried to use the flatbed scanner to copy em. Very bad quality copy. Sometime this week I'm gonna bring em to a shop and see if I can get some clear hi-rez copies. Ill post em. Good times. The radio is coming in now, off and on. Wow, its already the 7th? -
