  2. We're so far from rock bottom. There's a lot of down to go. even if you're just talking about 2018, if they start gutting this team, or worse, promote the #brand experiment in AA. They're not actually this bad and some of these players are quite good. The right retooling around Manny Machado has them very strong contenders as soon as next year.
  3. Also I'm not sure she's right about the service time/salary.

Once Ramos was placed on the 60 day, the 40-man stood at 39, right?

It's a little more than a half season. Part of the difficulty of 100 wins is going through the ups and downs and injuries of 162. You don't need to be as good over 91. The alternative is going on a binge like the 11-1 and then just playing to roughly their ability the rest of the way. if they win 15 of their next 20 they only need to go on like a 96 win pace to get to 88.

And when Noah comes back, if they can just get close, maybe they call up Alonso and he goes on a tear. And I know that "if everything breaks right they can maybe grab a wild card" was exactly the season I was campaigning against in the winter, but given the choice between that and another lost season... Teams become other teams so fast sometimes. they turn corners. Smith and Rosario could suddenly be cornerstones. It could happen tonight. Maybe Coors was an outlier and the bullpen/pitching just wasn't ready for it, and it was a minor blip and this is the start of that corner turning. Like the corner they turned in 2015. It wasn't just Cespedes, as it took a few days for Cespedes to take flight. 57-34 to get to 88 wins isn't absurd, if they start now. The Nationals are flawed and broken too. They're really not this bad. But they've dug a big enough hole that a 49-42 'solid' finish isn't going to do it.

  8. Here's a dramatic race: Hit By Pitch, National League, 2018 T1) Rizzo, CHC: 10 T1) Bryant, CHC: 10 T1) Nimmo, NYM: 10 T4) Wong, STL: 9 T4) Cervelli, PIT: 9 T4) Dietrich, MIA: 9 7) Contreras, CHC: 8 T8) Rojas, MIA: 7 T8) Schebler, CIN: 7 T10) Anderson, MIA: 6 T10) Taylor, LAD: 6 And that only counts the stat. Nimmo's actually been hit by 11 baseballs.
  9. It's good that someone has been reading my tweets I guess.

At this point, he has already kind of won the at-bat, tilting the odds from the pitcher's favor to his own, when all he has to do is get on any way he can. Forgetting about the fact that this is a pitcher struggling with his control, if he takes the and it's a strike right down the pipe his On-Base-Percentage going forward from there is still .387. But put that ball in play, and his OBP (and batting average) is .338. Leave the bat on your shoulder! Make him throw a strike! Science! so literally more batters get hits after 2-0 than end up walking. I'm not sure .387 vs .338 is worth an automatic take on 2-0 if you identify the pitch as hittable. I wonder what those splits are when the third pitch is in the zone.

  12. Hitting is hard. Sometimes you gotta identify your pitch and try to get on, even on 2-0 or 3-0. Sometimes it's your best shot. If he'd taken the strike, it's 2-1. He might not get another hittable pitch. I mean, he threw the same fastball, just a smidge slower with a bit less spin, but instead of off the plate outside, it was dead center, just at the bottom of the zone. But that's classic pitch sequencing right? Throw a ball high to raise the eye level, and then throw one low and they swing over it. The pitch itself was a crappier pitch, which probably wasn't by design. If it'd dropped as much as the first two, Cabrera swings over it completely and gets another shot. But it was a pitch that was dead center with 9 inches of vertical movement. Hitting is hard.

  14. well 5 innings zero runs is a nice upside. That's who he is. Most of the starts are meh and you have a chance to win, with the occasional blow up where things just aren't working right. This year he probably came back too early and then had Coors happen, which isn't nothing. I mean, he's mostly a meh pitcher. he's league average when things break well across a season and replacement level when they don't. Edgy MD wrote: I would have kept him out of Denver. He's EXACTLY the kind of low-velocity, breaking-pitch-dependent pitcher who gets creamed in high altitude. He has even in his better times and did yesternight. yeah, I think they should've avoided that.
  15. Ashie62 wrote: Any new updates on Thor or Cespedes? Rest? 60 day DL? Cespedes I think was starting to slowly ramp up. no word on Thor yet but he was getting coffee in Denver on Monday so she's still with the team and not in PSL.
  16. nah, give it to him. deGrom's as good a bet as you can make probably. You look at these gifs and it's not the velocity or even the movement so much as how utterly similar everything looks until the last moment when you actually have to hit it. I feel like that's probably the most sustainable skill of a pitcher? It looks like he's good at the changing speeds within a pitch thing too. The Bartolo Colon method perhaps? His release point plot is a tiny tiny thing too.
  17. can't find a gif of that last pitch (and can't make one myself on my phone due to copyright) but there is this [tweet] [/tweet]

He's at 2.8 fWAR right now. I meant by summer, clearly. I'm still baffled by the Bruce acquisition, as it clearly showed no trust in Nimmo, despite being an Alderson draftee. It's hard to say "oops, you're a 4th OFer now" to a guy you gave 3/39 to like Bruce. but the obvious move is Bruce DL, since he's very clearly hampered by like 30-40 feet on all fly balls by all the nagging injuries.
