  1. they're 7 over, we're not going to get them to .500
  2. I have no trouble trolling the Twins. hell, maybe we shoudl've pushed hard for 'Mets' then. or like the Las Vegas BlueAndOrange or whatever I don't know the state of the other options. Vegas may be a transportation disadvantage but a new facility will undoubtedly have amenities that probably outweight that compared to make National minor leaguers play in a dump that doesn't have a water fountain or something.
  3. We missed the 51s name suggestion deadline for next year, we really missed an opportunity to troll someone, perhaps Nationals fans, with naming them like The Las Vegas Nationals Suck or something.
  4. I'm really doing neither, I think they are/were both out of touch old white men that cared primarily about status and profit. Like many rich folk, their various successes have a lot to do with already being rich, luck, and circumstance.

Agree. I was being customarily and stylistically snarky. But Madoff. Likely knowingly. Top that. If only Steinbrenner had cared enough about winning to do whatever it took to make a few extra bucks for years. It's impossible to know because these are all private finances, but maybe Mike Piazza doesn't happen without Madoff.
  6. There's no such thing as a right move, it's unlikely him playing has delayed his return in anyway, and he was productive during that time. likewise, he could've been productive and healthy enough to contribute in like 3 days and healed up just fine playing through it, it's hard to know for sure.
  7. Centerfield wrote: In 17 games, Tomas Nido had 6 total bases. Mesoraco had 7 last night. Wheeler has a higher OPS than Reyes. Plawecki has 3x as many walks.
  8. Centerfield wrote: Yeah, so just like we all predicted, that lineup scored 12 runs. Baseball. What a great game. This team badly needed a laugher. Surprised to see Callaway burn Lugo like that in a blowout. With Wheeler going today, they're likely to need help early. I guess he figures Gsellman is fresh. yeah, day off before and after so he's probably not too pitcher concerned.
  9. Blue Jays are 1-4 in NY this season. Their only win coming in the Bronx, as all their NY wins have ever come from, ever. This one is scheduled to start at 1 but like, RAIN RAIN RAIN is coming down down down in rushing rising rivlets.. I imagine they'll try to squeeze it in in some manner. The Blue Jays do technically come back to NY but the Mets are not around those times. Unless they want to try to play a really funky DH on 8/18 where they play a day game in the Bronx and the Mets play the Phillies and then rush back to NY to play a night game against the Jays. seems unlikely. This one will feature Wheeler and J.A. Happ. Though rain threatening may be heavy bullpen too. Happ is pretty much textbook league average. He's actually been really good this season just with too many home runs, though his last two starts have been crap and he only struck out 3 each game despite still having a career high K%. Mets have seen him a lot, the former Phillie, and hit him well. Thought mostly not this crew. Wheeler meanwhile is coming off a good start against the Reds after a disastrous start against the Rockies. I guess there's still hope he can be a little better with his control and walk fewer, strike out others.
  10. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Arenado is arguably the second-best position player in the league. So, yeah, he'll work at third. Machado would almost certainly work there, too. I'm not sure with what we're supposed to be agreeing or disagreeing. Is the premise that there are no, um, good/great players? If this is the case, well... I'll politely point out that you're forgetting a guy who's about 6 seasons in to what may be the best baseball career ever. Like, in history. And even if you leave him off your list... you've got Machados and Harpers and Bettses and Altuves and Correas and Bryants and Goldschmidts and Lindors all OVER the damn place. Kershaws and Klubers and Saleses and Scherzers and Thors, too. And Ohtanis! Oh, the Ohtanis![/bigpurple]And reanimated Verlanders! And Bartolo! I mean, you can say you don't see the cool shit... but you'd have to be pretty willfully looking past some pretty obviously cool shit[/bigpurple].
  11. If Wright doesn't get/have Stenosis he's a fucking hall of famer. It was absolutely the right move, he by all logical accounts had years and years left of high, perhaps great, production, especially given that his profile fits so well into the juiced ball era. The guy would've hit 40 home runs in 2016. It was absolutely the right move, on any level, to re-sign him. Only a team doing a complete tear down we actively want to lose games for 4 years to get picks would even consider it.
  12. fuck Alex Wilson then. Why would Cano have gotten in to the Hall anyway? He's not better than Barry Bonds and he's not a Hall of Famer, so Cano must not be either.
  13. They got outpitched in the play-in game, big deal. They should've started Duda, but whatever. more watered down than it was in years past but still deserved. If they make the playoffs this year, and they should, that'll be 3 years in 4 they made the postseason. And you'd have to think they'd be poised to do it again in 2019. And they capitalized off 2017 where they could, bringing in some live arms for expiring contracts. Like it or not, they're in it.
  14. I mean, hell, it's tough. The Wilpons are not good people, and if that's enough for you to not want to support the product that's fine. Same could be said for quite a few corporations, and it's a tough road sometimes. Hobby Lobby, Chick Fil-A, Walmart, etc. I'm reluctant to support those, which are probably worse than the Wilpons. But then there are the other people. the employees, the players, the workers at the stadium. They benefit by your support of the team. exponentially less than the Wilpons sure, but that's life. Do we stop watching House of Cards because Spacey is a predator? What about all the other actors, the behind the scenes people working on the set, the writers, that might just be flat out out of a job if we don't? I don't know what to tell you. The difference between the Wilpons and the Steinbrenners, the Mets and the Yankees, hell the Mets and the Padres, is way less than you're making it out to be, and the reasons to follow the Mets/baseball is generally so far removed from overall record during the years you follow and the owners pocketbooks. But if it's not, sure, step away.
  15. Rockin' Doc wrote: Most importantly, the Mets need to add players that are in their prime (or whose best years are likely to be ahead of them) not prior stars whose best years are past. Like Todd Frazier and Cespedes and Lagares? The only guy who is old and past his prime (one year past) is Gonzalez, who's actually been somewhat fine and unlucky. Jason Vargas and Jay Bruce too, but the Mets have some depth there and it's not like they're relying on these guys to carry the team.
  16. Edgy MD wrote: I'm not sure what we're talking about. If we prefer the Yankees, we prefer the Yankees. If not, why lionize Hal Steinbrenner? there's a strong, large, and persistent faction of the Mets fanbase that wishes they were Yankee fans and it's only stubborn pride, opportunity, or tradition that keeps them from making the switch.
  17. 41Forever wrote: What's a profit-monger? Hal would cut payroll to 4 million and tell MLB to fuck off with the complaining about them taking money and not spending it on the team if he felt like a 4 million payroll makes him more money than a 204 million one. Without a hesitation. seawolf17 wrote: Unquestionably, yes, but he doesn't seem to let it affect the product on the field. If Cashman goes to him and says "I need $400M for Harper" next off-season, he'll get it. maybe. I still don't see that, especially given the Stanton trade.(Machado would actually be their guy unless these prospects really really work out) But it helps to have 'acquired' the team when he did. Already running with a huge profit margin. And if you think he's not making all sorts of investments all over the place that are skirting laws and loopholes, you're kidding yourself. It's just that his 'Madoff' is slightly to the otherside of the legality line. So far. Well, if there exists a line anymore. Certain people are working to make sure people like Steinbrenner and Wilpon get much much richer, but that's more for the politics thread.
  18. A Boy Named Seo wrote: In context, it's less damning. He's trying to defend Noah from criticism, but the way he said it was dopey and it sounds like he's taking a swipe at him instead. https://nypost.com/2018/05/14/mets-rotation-defense-includes-an-overhyped-noah-syndergaard/ in the sense that 'why the fuck is Puma/other asking about Thor in that context'? maybe. But it's still stupid and wrong and he's one of the best pitchers in the game RIGHT NOW and maybe what we don't want is him feeling like he has to go out next outing and throw 103?
  19. still early I think. i'm mostly mucking along managing injuries.
  20. Nymr83 wrote: George might have sone some sleazy shit, but Hal Steinbrenner is pretty much the model of good ownership lol. he's a sleezy rich profit-monger just like the rest of them.
  21. You can't knock the process in Nimmo and ignore his major league value and also not call the Wheeler acquisition/process a fleecing. They got a talented arm for literally nothing but some sentimental AB.
  22. Lefty Specialist wrote: Well, the problem is 2009-2014 and 2017 with an end date to be determined. 2009 and 2010 were the last ditch efforts to keep the last window open after the injuries started caving it in. they drafted deGrom in 2010 and fleeced the Giants for Wheeler in 2011. in 2011 they signed Nimmo. in 2012 they fleeced the Blue Jays for Syndergaard and d'Arnaud and drafted Plawecki. They extended the contract of their Hall of Fame caliber 3Bman. They signed Rosario They drafted Conforto in 2014. They extended Lagares. So really that period you're talking about IS the rebuild. They made the playoffs in 2015 and 2016, and were extremely injuried in 2017. They did a lot last offseason, despite it maybe not being exactly what some people think was best, to make this part of the 2015+ window and not the end of it. And it shouldn't be! Conforto, deGrom, Thor, Plawecki, Frazier, Rosario, Smith, Cespedes are all still here. they're all good pieces, and it's unlikely all the rest of them will suddenly be worthless. We're in the damn window, let's stop pretending they're not good enough just because we're in the middle of a rough patch.
  23. batmagadanleadoff wrote: I saw Rey Ordonez homer against the Jays at Shea. In my mind, the HR was against Roger Clemens, but I looked it up and Clemens came out the inning before. I watched Rey's HR from that primitive by today's standards, right field corner field level food court where a frozen Digiorno mini pizza pie was about as good as it got. that was such a weird 'secret' food court or whatever.
  24. That's because it's a bad plan, that could end up meaning 'just suck' for years and years. There's no guarantee prospects turn into a good core. Hell, if Smith and Rosario were as good as once projected we'd be running away with this thing. But on that same front, the Braves and Phillies rebuild looks okay, but it's not necessarily complete and the Nats window is probably closing. The time seems ripe to double-down. Though that's what I felt like they should do in the offseason with Darvish and/or Ohtani.
