IGT 7/9: PHI @ NYM G1- Okay, NOW the Turnaround Begins

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I'll only notice if Frazier's not in there by the lack of groundball double plays. There's a lot of things wrong with the Mets but Frazier is turning out to have been a bad idea. I know they implied it was a new injury, but it being something nagging would actually explain why he's been mostly bad since returning from the DL. -

That's still be about 2017 levels and 1500 more than 2014. And we've still got some hot summer months of above average to make up some of that.

I don't think anyone 'figured out' Chris Davis, just that he started to decline and had only one tool, that of power, which plummeted. (see also: Jay Bruce) the numbers have gotten worse this year, but like 15-16-17 it's not like he was striking out much more. he wasn't missing the ball more. he started walking less and less but was still walking in '16. He's just pulling less, hitting it lower, and weaker. Pretty much exactly the definition of 'losing bat speed'.

IGT 7/17/18: All-Star Game, "This Time It Doesn't Count"

Benjamin Grimm wrote: Oh, so you're talking about people who are technically eligible, the same way that I'm eligible to be pope because I was baptized Catholic, even though I'm now an athiest. I was talking about reasonable choices. Philip Evans is as likely to be an All-Star as I am to be the next pope. Jacob deGrom is the only Met who deserves to be an All-Star based on merit. If he wasn't around, then the Mets would get a pity choice. well, you're still wrong as i made the case for the merits of three others. -

I"m low. 46 players have played for the Mets this season, and if fans had decided to mount a campaign and vote in Phillip Evans, he would've played in the game. -

Benjamin Grimm wrote: DeGrom is the obvious choice. Really the only choice. Mets have like 40 guys who could've gone. Did you mean some mystical merit based game? Well, Nimmo obviously. Asdrubal has fallen off a bit lately but he's still have a good season. He wouldn't be a bad pick. Zack Wheeler is 11th in qualified SP fWAR. That's probably border line but wouldn't be a wrong pick depending on who bows out/pitches Sunday and how many relievers you take. That's probably it though. -
Unless he shows he has nothing this season in rehab, where he's basically working for free, you have a shot of acquiring a top-flight reliever for an arb contract? sold.

Let's say your entire office is Mets fans and they're all talking about the Mets. #MetsTwitter is the 3-4 guys over there that you'd rather didn't voice their opinion. Most of the time you just ignore those people, but sometimes someone you talk to more regularly about the Mets happens to also be talking to one of them and you overhear it. Oh and the company newsletter (the beat guys) love poking the bear and talking about those 3-4 guys opinions because they're #hottakes In most cases those 3-4 guys are unaware that they're the undesirables as well.

small market teams get a bit more, and you can trade some of it, and if you're over the luxury tax, you can lose some of it.

They could do this even if they don't raise payroll 50 million, change owners, or fire every doctor that's ever touched a Met. 2015 and 2016 were not flukes, they were a result of key moves. I had a blast those two seasons and they don't need to be dismissed as lucky. With enough hindsight at my disposal, I'm calling total fluke on 2015. Dont forget that they sucked and looked headed for another Madoff ravaged season until Wilmer cried and they went unconscious for about five weeks. It was the Mets version of Linsanity, where Lin made the cover of SI for two straight weeks and for those two weeks, played like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Lebron James all rolled into one. Unsustainable. Certainly, Cespedes's Babe Rutb run was an unsustainable Yosanity streak for the ages. Once in a lifetime, you go an an incredible odds defying roll where everything comes up lucky sevens for a while. That was 2015. Lol. They won by 7 games. They started 20-11. It was the swoon in late May-June that was the aberration. They went 13-12 in July, pre-Cespedes. Cespedes was on fire, but it wasn't a one-player thing. They, players that had been there all year, stayed healthy and contributed. And then the next year they again had a winning season and a playoff birth, despite less health. They clearly swapped out some of the wrong pieces going forward there, but that doesn't mean that enough of the talent isn't still there to readjust. Especially if Smith and Rosario are pieces. I mean, that's the crux of it. If these are going to be two above average+ contributors to the franchise, the Mets will be very good. These are fine gambles. These are gambles all teams take, in relying/hoping on top-ranked high-minors players to be big parts of the team for the next few years. If that doesn't come to fruition, they have to be more creative and/or more spendy, but even that's possible. seawolf17 wrote: Edgy MD wrote: Sign him to an extension NOW!!!! and start changing the narrative. Agree on this. Get him and Thor in a room and sign them both through 2023 immediately. deGrom more than Thor I think. He's further from FA and the velocity just seems like he could break/be diminished at any point. 3.5 years is a long time.

I had a blast those two seasons and they don't need to be dismissed as lucky. At least make your points without "If you take away the good stuff, this is all bad!" I mean, the biggest issues this season are that Syndergaard has a finger injury and Cespedes has a chronic hip thing. I really don't see any real cause to say the Mets _caused_ those things. If anything they're being TOO cautious with Syndergaard. Sure, they could still be broken players next season, but so could literally anyone you peg as the guy the Mets HAVE to sign. At this juncture, I see no reason why the Mets shouldn't be in position to compete next year, so I'm not sure why I should be crying into my beer about this dumb franchise and all doom and gloom.

It counts. 2015 counts, so does 2016. Fuck the market, I'm more concerned about the competition. And the division is still very ripe in coming years.

smg58 wrote: 20/20 hindsight. People would have come after the Wilpons with torches and pitchforks if we didn't re-sign Cespedes yeah, but, that's a poor reason to do something and I'm worried some garbage reasoning about spending money was why they got Bruce again too. I was skeptical about Cespedes after 2015, less so after 2016, but it still felt like too much money. But it's not my money and I don't particularly care how much guys make unless it's actively going to prevent them from getting Machado or an infielder going forward, because that's where they needed/need help. So in that respect even in hindsight it's fine. He's a good hitter and you'd like to have him here. He could not miss another game for all we know about the future.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I'm just blown away by how fast and decisively Mickey has gone from Manager of the Year to Most Likely to Be Fired. On the one hand he's Sandy's chosen pick and almost as fast he's low-key exasperated with the players Sandy has gotten him. He comes off as thoughtful and organized but lost a game to the Reds batting out of order, and the play generally has been sloppy and the in-game stuff iffy. .Kernan of all people today wrote about how the Mets don;t have a kind of organization approach to things like bunting. I thought we'd had that much going back to Peterson and his "CEO of Pitching" approach; and there was much talk about Sandy preferring that aggressive attacking your pitch kinda thing they always referenced with Duda. But it could be those things went away when they didn;t bother to rehire anyone to tale Depodesta's role until Fred decided he wanted his man Omar back. That of course was looked at very supiciously by the existing FO and its surely at some level fouling up whatever succession plan there was. The thing that makes Kernan's article iffy about the 'organizational approach' stuff is he talked to an acquired guy about something along the lines of task lists like they didn't have it, but I _know_ there were pitchers, I think it might've been Flexen, who said the opposite. He didn't talk about it like it was some "omg, look at this very regimented thing the new guys are doing!" thing. just business as usual. I have no problem with Dominic Smith not knowing how to bunt. You'll notice that in his "back to basics" description of the Mets pre-game workouts, he Kernan doesn't mention Smith bunting either. Writers pull at a thread and everything seems connected, but I suspect they've been doing this stuff all season and it's only now been worth mentioning as it pertains to a point someone's trying to make. In any event, I like Callaway and hope they don't fire him.

When he has a stretch of 3+ starts with a K/9 above 9 I'll believe he's "better".

Centerfield wrote: Jeff Wilpon has every opportunity to say “When Sandy recovers, we fully expect him to resume his position as the General Manager of the Mets. He is our guy and has our full support.†Instead, he stood by and deflected as Sandy fell on his own sword. Sandy Alderson was fired today. Make no mistake of that. Sandy did a terrible job but is a good man. It’s terrible that his cancer has recurred. It’s an absolute fucking travesty that his dickless employer is using this illness to skirt taking responsibility. It's be unfair to the Mets to hold that job for him. You don't think they talked about this before hand? Doing that almost mandates that they go forward with this three-headed monster rather than actively look for a replacement/future. They'll miss a guiding hand at the trade deadline, but otherwise this is a particularly slow time and a great time to hire someone. (It's pretty obvious they were waiting for the draft to end) And come on, the Mets love to give their old execs cushy jobs. If Alderson wants to come back in some capacity, the Wilpons will make that happen. That's the sorta meddling we complain about right? Anyway, Good luck Sandy.

hopefully they'll being the process of looking for a replacement immediately and this will be temporary. You gotta feel kinda bad if you just wrote a "Sandy Alderson is DESTROYING THE METS AND MUST BE STOPPED" post though.
-
I've waffled on Alderson over the years. He's made some good moves and bad. Some good moves that went bad too. I have no idea what his fascination is with Jay Bruce who he presumably has been constantly trying to trade at various points since he's been here and it seems like he's the only one that wants him. I don't think this is Mets prompted though. This is media driven to cast blame further up. Your moves didn't work this time so it's your fault. The Wilpons, as they often do, will cave to what the media tells them is pubic pressure, and move on. Hopefully anyway. It seems like they have two moves, either fire the guy and move on, or micromanage him/put on restraints and screw things up. i.e. I believe a trusted GM could tell the Wilpons they have to get Machado, whereas a one at the end of his rope cannot unless they themselves think it's the move. I kinda hope they don't though. I think I like Callaway and I worry a new GM does a whole new shakeup. I believe this team can win next year, but I worry a new organization might take a conservative "Let's assess what we have" type year. Of course, they might need a shakeup, organizationally, in terms of player development/coaches in the whole system. On the other hand, they might not, and might end up losing good people to organizational churn.

Jameson Taillon vs Jim Bean Lugo Jose Cuervo Bautista is 1/3 with a HR vs Taillon.

Felt like a worthwhile flier to give Smith some time to develop properly. See if the one off year was indeed injury related or sign of full decline. Had some good metrics the first month or so, with some bad luck, and then they faded. So perhaps still has/had some talent but couldn't handle the daily rigors. Maybe should've started as a bench guy but Smith got hurt anyway. Seemed a nice and appreciative guy of his chances.
