  1. =seawolf17 post_id=23428 time=1569949270 user_id=91] Gwreck brought this up below, and I was thinking about it the other day too. Does some sort of Betts/Syndergaard deal make sense? Obviously including other players. I don't know what it looks like, but I feel like it does make some sense.
  2. good season everyone! I lost steam around August myself, not specifically to Fantasy but certainly inclusive of it. Expect the draft to be 3/18 at 9pm. Let me know if you're leaving or want to join, etc.
  3. =HahnSolo post_id=23441 time=1569952775 user_id=63] =41Forever post_id=23425 time=1569949073 user_id=69] Tracky was saying JD Davis might be one of their better trading chips, especially to an AL team. He really doesn't have a position here unless Conforto is moved — which he also thought was a possibility.
  4. Vic Sage wrote: In all seriousness... see, that's the problem. Why shouldn't it be a serious notion that the Mets sign Cole? I mean i know why its not, but $$ is not an acceptable answer for a NYC franchise with a mid-market budget. Well, that speaks to Regan (or presumably, whoever we replace him with?) Like, do you believe that whatever the Astros taught Cole is transferable? Or is there something to his routine, his daily coaching, etc. Will he be good for a few months and then start to degrade as Mets (or whoever) coaches don't know how to realign the fluctuations of the season with whatever it was that was making him awesome?
  5. do not want Buck myself. I know these things tend to oscillate, 'new blood', 'old school' and we have the new guy now, but I'd still rather someone that hasn't coached before.
  6. I 'like' Callaway better than Terry, but perhaps because I kinda enjoy the way he makes the beat guys gnash their teeth. Given young kids I haven't really been able to dive into the minutia of strategy the way I did previously. I liked a lot of what I heard from Callaway early, but it seems like he departed from some of that, and I'm not sure that was organizational directive or him over-correcting where he felt he 'failed'. I don't really have a good read on Brodie's tactics yet, but letting a manager ride out the season while you get acquainted with everything seems pretty standard, and then replacing him with your own guy. I don't think they _have_ to ditch him, but it is probably the right move. Many managers are much the same though, so I can't even say there's someone out there I want. It's all so tied in with stuff we don't understand, directives from above, clubhouse stuff we never hear, injuries and issues we never learn about.
  7. it's lame, but I still like it. go for it. it's a game and a meaningless one at that. It would've been less lame if he'd had money on it. If I could drop the ball on a project so a coworker gets an extra 10k or something? I'd do it. Also it's Chris fucking Owings. I could strike him out.
  8. find out what's happening with the ball next year. Because Edwin Diaz is very very very good. It's seemingly all the slider. It's harder to throw with this ball which leads to more meatballs and more complete misses/walks. It's hard to know how much of the damage as a result of the slider is natural, or bad luck, or whatever. It seems like a lot of those probably should've just been long fly outs or doubles. Hell, even a fraction of an inch more break or movement and they are. You don't trade a guy under control that strikes out nearly 40% of every batter he sees. That's absurd. Especially if you're trading low.
  9. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Here's a question: was the reSHaMation of the roster affected in the second half of the year a good thing? It was fun to get back into things, Fred sold more tickets, and Stroman I suppose is worth having next season. But given the ultimate miss, would the Mets have been better off long-term to have sold at the deadline? I mean, it's hard to know. What would we have gotten for Wheeler and Frazier? Who else was expiring? Lagares? meh. Wheeler also gets us a pick, so factor that into your math. I don't think they'd have gotten a real regular for him. Maybe you could've gotten a good reliever? but probably not, as relievers are gold and a team trading for Wheeler or Frazier probably needs him! Anyone expendable there is probably available this offseason too. I think, ultimately, There wasn't a clear "we're better off trading this guy if we're not going to make it" situations. Maybe around the edges, something you can hopefully remedy with a few bucks or some analytics or hell just J.D. Davis style luck.
  10. 1B metrics are particularly circumspect, but I'm surprised at how badly Alonso is scored there. I don't feel like he's been that bad, though granted my close focus on games the last few seasons to notice things like that is extremely limited. It's possibly the Metrics are actually overrating him too, because I'm not confident they truly take into account what's needed over there as it pertains to each play. But Comforto and Nimmo are probably both at least average on the corners. McNeil on the infield. I think Rosario maybe has gotten to an 'average'ish place, at least as far as next year's hopes go. Lowrie should be at least average. There's probably an argument to be made to shake up CF and C and go harder on defense there, but you'd need a decent step up offensively to what we got from Lagares and Nido this year to make that work. Brewers are gonna exercise Grandal's option. Ramos was certainly a solid second choice, but man, it's hard not to see the Mets and Brewers flip-flopped if Grandal takes the Mets superior offer.
  11. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I wish I was more optimistic that this was a building-toward-next-year type of near-miss and not a we-wasted-otherworldly-performances kinda near-miss. who's having otherworldly performances? Alonso and McNeil but like, Alonso is good and we knew that. Even if this is otherworldly, there's no reason to not expect worldly next year. I'm not ready to play fantasy offseason yet, not really my thing anyway, but this was expected to be a mid-80s team, and seems to be headed that way. If you believe some in the talent of some of these guys, it's easy to see where they're good next year. Hell, it's easy to think the juiced ball and specifically the damage to the slider as a whole affected the Mets more than other teams, in how it hit Thor and Diaz. There's a lot of talent on this team. They gotta replace Wheeler, but most of it's staying put. Brodie has roughly a billion different things he could do to improve this team too.
  12. why wouldn't Cespedes have anything left or be able to play?
  13. Benjamin Grimm wrote: They might QO Wheeler to get one more year out of him. They're going to QO him, and get the second rounder or whatever if/when he signs elsewhere.
  14. I think comparing like, David Wright and Pete Alonso to a scumbag like Lindsey Graham is cruel. I think there's just an avalanche of nonsense and off the field business and visits to this and that and firehouse and hospitals and all that other ancillary stuff ballplayers do, that's not playing ball, that asking them to maintain some sort of indignation about something non-baseball is pretty tough.
  15. Because the Mets fell short, I expect there will be a lot of dismissal of 'effort' and the multitude of great parts of this team for excuses about why they didn't make it. A lot of 20-20 hindsight stuff, a lot of narrative beating.

Frayed Knot wrote: was the $92 fee mentioned upfront when he bought this year's tickets? -- seeing as how he had to call the ticket office after the fact to find out what the charge was for, the charge was apparently neither mentioned upfront nor explained on the bill if so, quit whining! -- not sure putting a 'Because we feel like it' line on the bill makes it A-OK to charge you more than others for the exact same product or service The blue plate special today is $9.95, unless of course you don't also agree to come back for dinner next week and pre-pay for that meal now in which case we're charging you $12.95 I don't care enough to dig in, but I wouldn't be surprised if they charge that for everyone and the ticket office explained it stupidly/maliciously. and i agree, a lot, about how fucked up this all is, and it's also barely unique to the Yankees, as everything that's ticketed has a "cause we feel like it" fee or 17.

  18. I'm anti-hats anyway, so that works for me. Particularly the NYPD ones.
  19. this is such a nothing story, that happens probably all the time, and for some reason got leaked or needled out of someone. It's also not new, we knew Thor's feelings about it already. And there was no animosity anywhere. It was a private 'strategy' meeting and Syndergaard even said nice things about Ramos. He made a case, was rebuffed, no one on either side seems angry about it except a few loud fans and the 'need a story' media. Why are we even talking about it? We can focus on Ramos maybe, he's here next year but not even for that much. Should the Mets look to upgrade? is someone available that's not garbage? or should they look for an actual great defensive backup at least? Nido can go back to Syracuse, he hasn't been good here but he's still relatively young and inexperienced and sometimes catcher's need some time. Is there a catcher whisperer they can hire?
  20. =Centerfield post_id=21448 time=1568153706 user_id=65] Justin Turner is lazy and doesn't hustle. Ike Davis parties too late. Matt Harvey is a head case and parties late with models. Wilmer Flores has arthritis. All of this comes out as the players are into their arbitration years and nearing free agency. Yup.
  21. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Tuesday Night Mets Club reuniting at this one, we'll be in 407. It's basically win out from here, right? you finishing out the string? I might try to sneak in one more game in two weeks against the Marlins by myself.
  22. =metsmarathon post_id=21425 time=1568136464 user_id=83] but if syndergaard is two wins worse with ramos, it balances out.
  23. well, these broad value stats don't typically work on that granular a level but fWAR incorporates catchers defense. Even factoring in playing time, Ramos would be nearly a full win better over just the amount of time Nido has played. That's 3-4 wins over a full season. for the team. 3-4 wins. So like, Syndergaard could have Nido every game if he likes but it'd cost the team roughly a win to do so. Is there non-statistical improvement to be gained from that comfort level? that placebo effect? Sure, maybe. Especially if it's the only guy having an issue with Ramos and you can use it strategically to rest Ramos and have him 'better' the other games for being rested and all that.
  24. =seawolf17 post_id=21406 time=1568119670 user_id=91] Of course, the fact that Nido's got a .549 OPS in 126 PA probably more than cancels that out. But alas.
  25. Frayed Knot wrote: If FaFiF reminded him of it, he left it uncredited. But, considering that Howie's knowledge of NYM history surpasses even Gary's (by Gary's own admission) I'm gonna guess that he was on his own on that one. He also brought up the 'Bo Diaz' game via the same discussion. Howie doesn't follow Greg (or Jason) on Twitter, but I suppose he could be reading the blog independently. also read many of the 'expert' analysis of the 2018 postseason and you'll see plenty about how the Red Sox pen was 'not good' and going to expose them. Similar for the Astros the year before.
