next season at some point you'll be saying twice as many World Series appearances and as many wins as the Yankees in 15 years, but sure. Anyway, did Brodie make a single 'blunder' that you could attribute to him not knowing what to do? That you couldn't see various other GMs doing? Law's a hack. I believe even the Mets have a better idea what it takes to manage than Keith Law. Certainly that Beltran does. You think he learned nothing in major league clubhouses for 2 decades? Most of that argument is just gate-keeping nonsense. Of course they hired off the interview! That's what interviews are for! Oh but why not just take the safe Girardi pick? Is that what Law thinks? Probably. That's what a well run club like the Yankees would do right? They wouldn't pass over the tried and true Girardi for an ex-player manager that's never done it before.
-
well, he was Brodie's client. Luis Guillorme knows. Someone intrepid could probably ask him why he switched from 15 to 13 in the offseason. It 'might' not be nefarious? Maybe? Maybe Guillorme worked it out with Tebow when they played together in Spring Training this year, and because Luis had claim to the number until then, no one else actually picked it up. Could just be coincidence. Guillorme's listed as 13 in the spring training logs I've found. It's possible that's back filled (B-R seems to think he wore 15 from 2018-2019, but definitely not in the majors. I saw video of 4/7 with him in 13.) I haven't searched for spring training video though.

CYP: In The Neyer/James Guide To Pitchers -- co-authored by Bill James and ESPN.com's Rob Neyer presents a method, based on past results, to predict Cy Young balloting. This page provides an in-season snapshot of the Cy Young "race," as figured by the following formula: Cy Young Points (CYP) = ((5*IP/9)-ER) + (SO/12) + (SV*2.5) + Shutouts + ((W*6)-(L*2)) + VB (see below). VB: Victory Bonus is a 12-point bonus awarded for leading your team to the division championship had deGrom 5th last year.

And it's good news, showcasing the game's biggest stars. Everybody has fun talking baseball even after the season ends and before the hot stove stuff gets serious. There announcements prior to the 'Announcement' cause barely a ripple and it probably eliminates more chatter than it creates since you've eliminated even the possibility of anyone in the league winning aside from those three guys. Arguing deGrom vs Scherzer can be done with or without this interim step. But if you want to argue the merits of deGrom vs Strasburg, or Hader, or Kershaw, Soroka, Flaherty, or Castillo in Cincinnati? ... sorry, we've already pre-eliminated those discussions in order to create some 15 minutes of air time (that virtually no one will see) in early November.

every day there's 7 disasters and security issues but I feel like there was one involving the delivery of his big mac? Or maybe I'm thinking of something about ordering from a specific pizza place in brooklyn to be waiting at the tarmac in JFK? can't keep these things st raight.

wasn't the fast food thing because there was a food worker strike or something? I can't recall but I feel like the kitchen wasn't open for the NHL visit or whatever.
-
I mean, that's probably going to be Beltran's call. And depends on the rest of the roster. And ST. Like, If I can tell that Diaz needs to keep the slider down, than I assume the Mets know that too. Hell, it might make sense to have him only throw sliders all spring training and just do that. walk a billion guys if you have to, train that muscle memory!

Day/week before election day next year, do you think _Trump_ even shows? he'll probably be busy feeding access codes to Putin to make sure things are rigged properly.

=kcmets post_id=25969 time=1572903842 user_id=53] He's gonna win again, I hope we don't have to put off championships until 2025. I'm getting older by the day...

=Centerfield post_id=25936 time=1572887812 user_id=65] He has no idea. None of us do.

=batmagadanleadoff post_id=25925 time=1572885047 user_id=68] It's too bad they were too fucking cheap to get JT Realmuto. But whaddya expect? They won't even splurge for a manager and managers today, the top managers, could be had at bargain basement prices.

Carlos Beltran, 22nd Manager of the New York Mets
Ceetar replied to Johnny Lunchbucket's topic in New York Mets Talk
hitting coach Edgardo Alfonzo? one of the nice things about working from home is I guess I can easily stream and watch this press conference at 11. -
Grandal opted out with the Brewers. He had another good year. Fangraphs media projection is 3/48. Ramos, the second best choice last offseason, did not have so good a year, and isn't nearly as good defensively, something the Mets clearly need. I'd give him the same deal. convert the 4th into an option year given the year older or something. Will more teams be in? maybe, but this is a really good fit for the Mets. The rumors and allusions to Ramos being a bad guy to pitch to are going to hurt his trade value, but taking the top guy off the board will help.

Carlos Beltran, 22nd Manager of the New York Mets

https://nypost.com/2019/11/03/mets-risky-media-obsession-put-carlos-beltran-over-the-top/https://nypost.com/2019/11/03/mets-risky-media-obsession-put-carlos-beltran-over-the-top/ Sounds to me that the tail was wagging the dog in this process. Not good. Why don't you just hire the most qualified person that you can get and all this media stuff will just take care of itself when success emanates from experienced hands guiding good process? Are we instead going to be limited only to middling candidates and total shots in the dark who just happened to have passed through this town while potentially great hires are passed over just because they have done their best work in the Midwest? well that was a garbage hack job. He details all the intricate, and completely normal, steps of the interview. Look, he wanted Girardi, this is clear, but his only argument against Beltran is maybe explaining yourself to me is harder when you're accounting for more than just yourself? How is this anything but accusing Beltran of being selfish, something I bet I could dig up him saying about Beltran 10 years ago? And then he finishes it with a Wainwright mention because of course he's gotta get the dig in, he might get mistaken for being professional otherwise. hack. -
I'd love Betts and you figure it out, but the OF is crowded. Nimmo, Conforto, Cespedes, and Davis/McNeil I guess? I mean, you make it work. you put Betts in center and shuffle guys or someone gets hurt. But it's not you necessarily have an _Empty_ spot you're upgrading. This specific trade is heavily in Boston's favor. I'm not trading Syndergaard. He's awesome and probably irreplaceable in the rotation. Diaz doesn't need a change of scenery, he needs to get his slider down. Is that a new coach? better QC on the ball? New grip? Just bad luck? Fenway isn't the answer for him. Smith might be really good, I liked what I saw this year, but it was limited time, and arguably he was just put into the best positions/splits to succeed (with the bat anyway). But thanks to that value might actually be higher than his worth and he'd be a good guy to trade. J.D. Davis as well. (Trade high on Davis, buy Rendon) This Mets team has a lot of talent already, and it's going to be an interesting game of trying to figure out which guys are not helpful for 2020 and which guys are. There are like 42 permutations the Mets could do this offseason to attempt to get better, and it's not clearly obvious which ones are the best ways to go.

Carlos Beltran, 22nd Manager of the New York Mets

Edgy MD wrote: Met fans' desire for a flaming hothead as a manager must wait a while longer. Do those still exist any more? Tightly wound, ump-baiting, locker-room spread flipping managers? I would think Girardi is as red ass they come anymore, but Carlos was always a cool, calculating cat. The other thing mook Met fans are going to be reminding you of over the next few weeks is Walter Reed Medical Center. how about the guy the Phillies fired? -

boo hoo. I don't need any of this gate-keeping. There's no "right way" to become a manager. -

Love it, Beltran is awesome and smart and respected. He's got a sense of humor. He's willing to admit when he's wrong, willing to change. He's also willful and determined to succeed. (I could see that being catnip to Van Wagenen) -
IGT 3/26/2020: WAS @ NYM -- Let's Get This Decade Started
Ceetar replied to G-Fafif's topic in Archived Game Threads
Someday when I'm king, I'm going to re-vamp the off-season. When the World Series ends, everyone goes home and rests. Every team has 30 days to rest, celebrate individual awards and focus on their respective Tabloid Cover Derbies. Winter Meetings are held the first weekend of December. Free agency/trades have to be wrapped up by December 20, so that new jerseys can be under the tree by Christmas. Pitchers and catchers report the first week of January. Full Squads by January 15. Spring training games start February 1. Opening day March 1. I know there is the small problem of weather for the month of March, but I'm figuring if the Republicans stay in power, the cold weather will be just a temporary problem. I could get behind this. Well, maybe not the Tabloid covers because well the NY ones are all trash papers anyway and many of these cities don't have competing papers? Shorten up the free agency period. You probably have to work on the exclusivity window. here's a thought, let the "7 days to negotiate with Wheeler" happen after the _Mets_ season ends. helll, give them the entire month. You get the playoffs to negotiate with your own departing players, and then it's fair game. Baseball media can handle a little extra news during the playoffs, if anything it might keep eliminated teams engaged in the sport and therefore the playoffs. You've lengthened ST though, I think pitchers/catchers mid-January is fine. get 'em stretched out. You've lengthened the season a month, but I probably wouldn't add games. Add teams maybe, but work in those extra off days. Maybe end the season a week earlier just so it's not TOO many days off, but with the extra days you could set up the schedule so that march is mostly warm weather teams hosting first. Or hell, Neutral Parks to try to grow the game/try out new places? a 3-game series in San Antonio? Mexico City? etc. Or Japan, Spain, etc. The extra off days would work to your advantage this way. Plus with your team playing 5-6 times a week instead of 6-7, you might have a shot at Nationalizing the game again, at least a little bit. You'll still be assuming the team is on every night, but there will be more nights that they _won't_ be, so watch a different game. It'd help if MLB smashed the damn blackout nonsense, or networks worked together. Mets and Rays for example, made a deal so that SNY would show a lot of Rays games on Mets off days, or something. -
gotta think the Union would've preferred they stay and fight.

well yeah, Magary is awesome. He's got that snarky, but don't take all this stuff so seriously, tone down just right. But he's not the asshole working in LOLMets takes into every tangential baseball post. There are good writers, then there are writers that just go with the tone and it just comes off mean and nasty because they don't actually have anything to _say_ they just know how to say it to fit in. He's not the one pulling down posts over the editors head (what this is _really_ about). Nor is he responsible for one of the worst site layouts imaginable, going back years and years now. Nor is he responsible for the arbitrary comment section that just randomly selects some people to comment and not others. He's not writing entire articles that are just rankings designed to get people mad enough to click on them to argue about. Nor is he responsible for spamming the main 'Deadspin' page with all manner of nonsense from across the portfolio, so that if you did want to read about sports, you'd have to cycle through nonsense and every other post was a sponsored ad.
-
I"m fine with snark and sarcasm, Deadspin just had a meanness to it. That 'civil and thoughtful' discussion was mostly not that either. Society has as a whole gone to a more real. In part because we've learned that someone just made up the 'rules' of civility as a way to look down on others and thoughtful discussion was mostly because dissented voices were more easily silenced. People talk about social media 'bubbles' now but hell, 20 years ago most of the news culture was fed to you by mostly rich white men. It's not that nastiness has replaced something civil, it's that it's a lot easier for people to point that the people that claim they're above it all actually aren't.

Edgy MD wrote: And if more heads roll, it'll take them about two seconds to get a new site up and running and even some sponsorship on board Will it though? I mean, maybe they can poach some sponsors but to the tune of the same income they were making? Especially with the breadth of the place. And was it even technically profitable? I wondered that orginally, when Gawker was 'gone', why they didn't just call it something else? Less adherence to the brand/media company, more to the writer. You can (if you're an asshole billionaire or VC guy) silence a media company but you can't silence a writer. Looks like maybe Farmer's Insurance has canceled an ad deal. Also Deadspin was mostly drivel and clickbait, the site was a disaster from a user prospective, it was disorganized as hell if you actually did want primarily sports. The comment section was an arbitrary and elitist mess. There was an occasional good article but I was turned off so much by the overall tone and rampant meanness to it that I rarely checked it out.
