The narrative that's already forming that the teams that got caught are "cheaters" who didn't deserve to win and other teams are "clean" who deserved to win helps absolutely nothing. But what Houston (and maybe Boston) did with electronic spying and illegally installed real-time monitors for the sole purpose of giving an edge which obviously isn't an option to the visiting team goes way beyond what has long been considered acceptable in the sport even before Manfred specifically warned each club against attempting any such practice. well no, not illegally installed, this all stems from MLBs dumb idea of having managers challenge calls rather than just simply getting the call right. Which I guess it is also the reason for no delay on the feed, which ALSO would've solved the issue. And because you can challenge calls on the road, you could conceivably do it on the road too, depending on your opponents placement of the CF cam (which, you know, might mean they were cheating too) And it's not simply 'stealing' it, as they were decoding them too. No one's elaborated on this, but I imagine they wouldn't have used that word for simply "haha, he put down 1 finger" and figured out what the more 'complex' (because real code would've solved this problem too!) pattern. Which is why I'm generally fine with it and think it should be totally legal, like, there are a billion avenues to resolve it both by MLB and the 'victim' team. Let it be part of the cat and mouse game and don't over legislate something. But hell, baseball is still acting like it's 1930 and has to be dragged into the future kicking and screaming.
  2. he was bad and got worse.
  3. =nymr83 post_id=30020 time=1579317498 user_id=54] Who else was cheating? The Yankees - obviously!
  4. Not for nothing, but remember how we acquired Jake Marisnick despite the fact that he can't hit major league pitching? He and Beltran *were* teammates on that Astros team. I don't know what that means, but I wonder how involved Marisnick was and whether that made him such an offseason priority. That'd be a very Mets way to go about sign stealing "Hey, lot's not develop our own system for this very simple thing, let's just grab some retread(s)? Were Carlos and J.D. like, this "computer" stuff. so weird man. Actually that's maybe not true. These guys were actually decoding the signs, not just reading them. Maybe Marisnick was good with pattern recognition or whatever so why not have a 25th guy on teh roster that's gonna be able to hop back tothe video room plenty and is good at decoding the pitcher's apparently garbage deceptions.

  7. I didn't read the Joel Sherman article, but even so, I'll guarantee that Joel Sherman didn't get anybody fired. There are some reports that Beltran was one of the masterminds of the cheating scheme. If that's true, Beltran should get a lifetime ban from baseball. Lifetime. Cheating on, I dunno, dozens of games. And an entire post-season run. And to you, that's nothing. I don't know if he wrote an article, probably, clickbait and all that. If him and his ilk didn't get on their high horse about Beltran not mentioning the investigation when he was hired and a constant barrage for the past few days about how he has to answer for this thing that the investigation decided not to charge him for. But not, they whined and complained and wondered what Beltran knew and why wouldn't he speak about it and OMG HE SAID HE KNEW NOTHING. so yeah, Joel and the other assholes did in fact get him fired. Jeff all but admitted when he said "when they saw the extent to which he was mentioned in the report" which, as we know, was once. the same amount as the New York Yankees. Also 'cheating'. For one, EVERYONE is doing it. for another, knowing the signs is not a crime. Yes, it's breaking a rule to do it electronically, for some reason, and even though everyone knew they were doing it no one bothered to obscure their signs? So fuck if I care, they tried to gain an edge by acquiring knowledge that's not against the rules to know. I literally do not care about that, nor do I care about steroids for that matter. As far as I can see, the playing field was still level and the games were still fair. So fuck all to the rest of it. But most of all to Sherman who tweeted he absolutely didn't suggest someone should get fired while constantly tweeting about whether or not he should be fired.
  8. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=29923 time=1579213028 user_id=68] =Ceetar post_id=29921 time=1579210660 user_id=102] fuck the media 100 ways to sunday, seriously. Can we get some real reporters to cover baseball that aren't out to get a guy fired for not being truthful to them about a situation that was currently under investigation by MLB? I didn't think I could lose any more respect for Joel Sherman. he sure showed me. asshole.

  10. it's a play on words of an inside joke of a misunderstanding of spanish lyrics (Beltran's walk-up music, El Esta Aqui) from 15 years ago.
  11. 4. As much as I love Beltran, and as much as I am rooting for him, I don't think he was the right decision as the manager of this team. I don't agree that he is very good with the media. In fact, I'd say he's thin-skinned and sensitive to criticism. I think this will end badly. 5. It was really shitty of him to lie. Sometimes a "no comment" works really well. Not sure how he could think that this would not come out. 4 is irrelevant though. The Mets thought he was (as do I), and shouldn't now fire him because of something random that happened in a previous job that he's not being punished for that has nothing to do with his job title now. 5. I mean, sure, whatever. he lied to the media about something he should've just flat out not commented on, sure, but the no comment is a comment too, so there's no avoiding it anyway. It doesn't avoid having to address it one more time (and that's it, because the Mets and Beltran won't be discussing this even as late as March) so he kept to the company line. whatever. We know he and the Mets aren't going to forthright with the media anyway, especially this bunch, because they haven't been for years and there's no reason to expect it's going to change now. So whatever. Stick to your plan. People are going to debate the merits of it, and that's fine, but don't change your mind based on January back pages. That's dumb, totally Wilponian too, which certainly isn't mutually exclusive.
  12. OK can someone send me a link so I can see the existing teams and know which ones are open? Maybe I could have choices from the rosters being abandoned? https://ottoneu.fangraphs.com/209/homehttps://ottoneu.fangraphs.com/209/home btw folks, keeper deadline is the end of the month! SET YOUR KEEPERS If you want the Lunchladies you can have them, I need to do an audit and see who else is up.
  13. and then fuck all the people that think this matters at all to anything and that would rather hear quotes from Beltran about the 2017 Astros than the 2020 Mets.
  14. Willets Point wrote: Maybe the solution to sign-stealing problems in MLB is to allow the pitcher & catcher to use technology like a smartwatch to communicate? I suppose batters/baserunners would still try to peek but it would be easier to hide from peeping eyes. whoops, the catcher kept the tech on during his AB while the pitcher was 'relieving himself' back in the video room. You could make the 'live' feed in stadium have a delay. You could use better signs that aren't as easily decoded. That's really all they had to do. be like, 5% more sneaky. But hell, maybe that's what happened. All this fuss is over something that seemingly ended on it's own because it was deemed to maybe not be that useful, and perhaps part of that is teams got better about encrypting their signs? Really, of all the easy things MLB could've done to combat this, tapping the phone lines was their solution? That's the "put a traffic cone on the pot hole" level of problem solving.

  16. because he's no longer a player.
  17. Frayed Knot wrote: So SunTrust, a large bank with a major presence in that area, are out after just a THREE YEAR sponsorship of a brand new stadium?!?!? bank drama. On December 6, 2019, the merger between BB&T and SunTrust closed, forming Truist Financial Corporation.[11] The two banks continue to operate separately, while merging their operating systems.
  18. WTF would they fire Carlos? that makes no sense.
  19. Regardless, the commissioner seems to want to pretend he's "resolved" this by telling other teams to stop talking about it. lalala nothing to see here, we made a big show of punishing the Astros and now it's all fine. Also lots of national/local "reporters" chomping at the bit to harass Carlos Beltran about this.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: If everyone is doing it — and maybe they are — wouldn't this investigation have uncovered evidence to that effect? Dozens of players were interviewed. Wouldn't somebody have said, "And you should see what goes on in Arizona! Holy shit with those guys!"? that wasn't the focus of the investigation. Logan Morrison did name other teams.
  21. my guess that they just figured since everyone does it no one would really make a big deal or a big punishment of it, much like amphetamines, or pine tar, or pretending to, or purposely getting hit by, baseballs to get one base.
  22. =G-Fafif post_id=29628 time=1578948482 user_id=55] Playing in Washington allowed Nationals to become very familiar with ethically ambiguous behavior.
  23. =kcmets post_id=29487 time=1578583050 user_id=53] Sure, now they come up with this stuff and not in 1997-1999.
  24. I'm excited. fun stuff. I love the starting position stuff and how they got rid of positions basically. And though there are all sorts of complex things going on, really you can break it down in a very simple way and one that's easy to convey. " this play below was considered to have a mere 10% chance of being converted into an out, since Carlos Correa had just 1.5 seconds to move 12 feet, then had to get the ball 147 feet to first base before Aaron Judge, who possesses above-average sprint speed (28.2 ft/sec), could get there."
  25. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=29459 time=1578514550 user_id=68] =Ceetar post_id=29455 time=1578513894 user_id=102] It's literally harder to hit a curveball in any other stadium after you've played a series at Coors Field than it is if you're last series was in any other stadium.
