  1. Honestly someone who's 83-4 is not a great plan for a radio announcer of a game with very fast moving parts and small objects and long distances. I think the yankees should be fair to John and get him to retire gracefully. In Ireland there was a legendary commentator - Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh - who commentated on both GAA Football and Hurling - he retired in 2010 at the age of 78. His tone was still clear, his instincts still right but he said had the fear of not enjoying it. Really I think he had the fear of not being able to do it with the magnificence that he had for the previous 40-50 years. For those of you who've never seen hurling - spend a few minutes listening to and watching this. It was his final All-Ireland Hurling Final (80,000 people watching in Croke Park) he's the radio commentator but someone's mixed it with the TV footage and it's amazing. https://www.youtube.com/qVRspOFudB0https://www.youtube.com/qVRspOFudB0 (can't get the YouTube to work as an embed)
  2. 7:05, friends. https://twitter.com/anthonydicomo/status/1511835431674986499 This really didn't suit me! 4pm is 9pm and i'd planned to have dinner finished by then, tidy up and retire to watching opening day. Instead I tried to watch a few minutes at midnight - but the delay of 1 hour 20 mins put it to after 1am. I was well zzzz by then.

  4. Edgy MD wrote: The Mets do it a lot. The notion is that, now that anything over five innings from a starting pitcher is a bonus, bigger bullpens are needed, and yo-yoing creates more available fresh arms. I mostly reject that notion as (1) a pitcher who gets sent down for a few days and comes back has the appearance of freshness, because you haven't seen him in a game, but (a) that doesn't mean he hasn't been used in AAA in the interim, and ( he's got the additional wear and tear from the round trip; and ( pitchers called to the big leagues need to make adjustments in order to get outs consistently, and they never get to do that if they get sent down after one or two outings. So, yeah, I agree that there is some degree of service-time manipulation in the yo-yo game. But the knock would be the Mets are doing it with guys who aren't good enough to be on the 25 man in the first place not turning the 25 man into a de facto 28/29 man ….

  6. If the structure of ownership/industry like this was replicated in Europe it'd have been broken up by a legal challenge long long long ago. Maybe even long long long longer ago! *rolleyes* The point I am making here is not that 'Europe' is inherently better or worse, but that at least - in this case - you would not find that the interests of the the 'league' is put ahead of the players that are contracted. The football industry is as horrendous as MLB or the NFL in many ways, with regards to the commoditisation of players. However, the big difference was when the style of 'contract system' that allowed clubs to have excessive control over players was challenged in the courts it fell apart. The biggest single moment was the case taken by a relatively mid range journeyman player Jean Marc Bosman. He was not a star, but a player at one of the better clubs in Belgium who wanted to leave to go another club in France. He was on about $3,000 a month https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosman_rulinghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosman_ruling It wasn't all good, but it has definitely meant that players incomes have expanded exponentially - even at the lower levels of the game.
  7. the owners are pathetic. They're a cosy cartel who make money out of an anti-trust exemption, yet they're still so greedy that they fuck this up to be sure they don't go near allowing people to earn what they should earn for their value. If the structure of ownership/industry like this was replicated in Europe it'd have been broken up by a legal challenge long long long ago. 30 owners controlling players ability to move and earn? bonkers.
  8. =metsmarathon post_id=86002 time=1645190273 user_id=83] what really pisses me off if the reporting that if harvey signs somewhere, he's going to get popped with a 60-day suspension.
  9. While I have no particular desire for people to be tested for 'recreational' substances, it does strike me as bonkers that a guy like could have what seems to be a serious cocaine problem and nobody go anywhere close to addressing it properly. There's definitely a sense of well as long as he takes the mound (nearly) every 5th day - we don't care.
  10. that's called being a pr person.
  11. None of Terry's quotes are great but I wouldn't rush to criticise him for talking about Harvey's issues here. There's a degree where Harvey's gone under oath and talking about things that takes stuff into the realm of the discussible. I do think the "I should just kill myself.' That's kind of a common excuse" - is pretty icky but I think you can just see a guy who was a bit out of his depth trying to figure out where to go with something.
  12. Davis/Smith will spot time as corner OFs and Davis @ 3b.
  13. To my mind it's fairly simple - but all this could change new signings/trades You see DH as a rotation between Davis & Smith. Alonso will pick up some games there too as I think you want Smith still getting 20-30 games at 1b. I don't believe Robinson Cano will contribute anything meaningful.
  14. Baseball Prospectus has the Mets prospects rated higher than BA: Alvarez - 10 Baty - 13!! Mauricio - 51 Nice to see. Later two of the BP prospect team are mets fans, and they do the podcast "for all you kids out there". If you can get past the fact that they still devote a portion of the show to wrestling it's can be an interesting listen. They are very very very low on Mauricio's chances to hit - so it's interesting that he's ranked higher by them then anyone else. They are very very HIGH on Brett Baty, but think they still aren't sure about sticking at 3rd.
  15. This is very very good ...
  16. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Anthony DiComo and Jim Duquette were talking about Stroman on Mets Hot Stove. Implied that he may have been a bad influence in the clubhouse and said that Scherzer is an upgrade over Stroman. I don't know about the bad influence thing, but Scherzer/Stroman isn't an either/or, so that spin doesn't make any sense at all. It's the "subtly" racist stuff like this that makes me not care that Stroman gest a little uppity on Twitter. Almost no one says DiComo or Healey should "be quieter on Twitter" You are right that there's long been stereotypes that the media not so subtly allude to that don't stand up to scrutiny where the inference is often that there's a 'hustling white guy' whereas it seems like if the player is a person of colour they're often either a 'flashy latino' or a 'sulky black guy' (or whatever sweeping generalisation you're having yourself - PJ McCann didn't hang around long enough to be labelled a drunken paddy). However, effectively endorsing someone saying "Anthony DiComo is a WOP" is pretty clumsy and stupid and for a man who regularly pronounces how much he thinks about things to do it shows that maybe he doesn't think about things as much as he should. Good Luck to Marcus Stroman, I wish him no ill, I would have been happy if the mets had signed him and he can be as loud as he likes on twitter it just may affect what people think of him. He has no reason to care what I think of him in the scheme of life, but I can't say it didn't have an impact.
  17. Most projection things will tell you that Carrasco should be a decent number 3. It's more to be sure we have the depth to have 3/4 more possible started for 6,7 & 8 and we haven't got Jared Eikhoff types getting however many starts he did.

  19. As someone also involved in publishing some books this year I can say they are 100% accurate about the paper issues. Worldwide problem.....
  20. I did like his fielding a lot. I also liked that he was atypical. He could have used staying off twitter enough to not like posts calling people racial slurs.
  21. If you're only complaint is that you say we should have got a chance to match/beat the offer and people aren't doing it I think the problem may not be with the other people but with you ...
  22. It looks like he won't be making any new memories in Orange & Blue Apparently going to the Cards - 4 years & 44 million.
  23. I think we're on the same side here. I'm not saying they're right. I'm explaining that I think Ken Rosenthal has worked his way through to a logical conclusion that the mets actions show that they're not going to sign someone with a QO attached lightly. You can definitely argue that there's a reason for that, but you can also argue that if the prize is good enough they shouldn't be worried about it. However, the big thing here is that to 'explain' their other actions they have boxed themselves into a corner where to do the latter they'll be looking obviously silly and therefore that will potentially prevent them from making a deal that they would otherwise make if they weren't worried about perception.
  24. Edgy MD wrote: Senger upped himself to fourth on the organizational depth chart, and he has a very good chance of being snagged in the Rule V Draft. which again you could point to as front office incompetence - there's plenty of space on the 40 man - and they sent him to the AFL where he could look pretty decent just to be sure people might be alerted.
  25. Is Rosenthal editorializing or does he have a source for that? The idea fits in the Mets unspoken rebuild, but that doesn't make it less infuriating all around. He is editorialising logically. They made such a big deal about the value of the Kumar Rocker pick - , that they can't then go and 'throw one of them away'. Of course you could point that they gave the result of one away for 2 months of Javy Baez and so saying you won't sign Marcus Semien for (say) 5 years for something that was only worth 2 months of Javy Baez points to the overall bonkers ness of the whole thing at the moment.
