  1. I'd add Trammell to the yays.
  2. i was one of the bert naysayers but unless he's looking for silly money I think he did enough for the Mets to be worth another whirl. 1.5 guaranteed up to 2.5 in incentives?
  3. What's Victor Zambrano done now?
  4. by the way - I'd have preferred to keep Petit then get $ 7 million; but then I'm probably a little too excited by the idea of pitchers coming through and a little too quick to forget that there first year or two in the ML's tends to have it's fair share of lump taking (of course there are exceptions but they're in a comfortable minority).
  5. seriously people are getting WAY to hung up on Mike Jacobs. If he really can't be a catcher he'll be a mediocre first baseman with a bit of pop potential. If he can catch well he'll be a real loss but I think they've done a good job of trading him while his value was at it's highest. He just reminds me of 2003's Jason Phillips.
  6. If we're prepared to take him off their hands and pay the salary I think there's a strong argument for not giving up much. Delgado's deal was such that LAST YEAR was a complete bargain @ $4 million and from then on it's pretty heinous. They've already got value out of the deal (a seriously top player at a seriously cheap price) so to be getting prospects out of it as well seems pretty excessive. I wouldn't cry if we gave up a Diaz/Nady (not that I don't think they're decent players) but if we start giving up ML Starter (which both of them probably are) and very good prospect (like Petit) then we might be giving up too much.
  7. i'm just disappointed that we didn't think about trying to tap texas us for Kevin Mench rather then San Diego for Nady. I'm 'not sure' about it as a move, I loved having Mike Cameron, but it is true that he was sub-optimally used at RF. I think Nady's a good bet to have an EQA comparable to Cameron's in 2006 - you probably lose a little defense - though BP's report on Cameron's defense in RF was a little below average.
  8. i read that column too and had some of the same thoughts as frayed knot. I suppose what he is doing is contextualising where David Wright is after 1.5 seasons versus his peers and then imagining that he moves along a similar path to those peers.
  9. If I was Mike Piazza I'd accept arbitration in heartbeat. He'd be guaranteed 70% of his existing salary.

    Molto Minaya

this isn't about Gotham Baseball or any of the other sites here, but there's a real issue with how people treat 'unnamed sources'. One of the biggest issues you find in Ireland is that the police (in particular but lots of other people besides) feed journalists lines for their own agenda, those journalists are too lazy/inexperienced/gullible to be able to actually see through it. The explosion of the media means that everyone needs to find their own angle from somewhere and people tend to be all too willing to listen to someone 'give them an informal briefing' without carefully dissecting what they're saying afterwards. Sure there are people that you reach a level of trust with that goes past that, but fundamentally if someone's NOT prepared to be quoted what they're telling you has layers to it - layers that may not always be obvious to the journalist.
  11. It's funny, I'm not sure that I wouldn't be prepared to buy the lottery tickets that is to take Thome off their hands @ 40-60 cents on the $. They're not going to get rid of Howard and they can't (despite ludicrous ideas of playing Thome @ 3b or Howard at LF) play the two of them, so for them it's either sunk cost or retard development and chew up the cheap service time of Howard. It'd be a 3 year $20-30 million whirl on a guy who when he's playing well is worth 5/6 wins to you. That's better then a 4-5 year $50-60 million whirl on Paul Konerko if you ask me. In my mind if Thome could recover his 03-04 form, he's better then any free agent bat out there - Brian Giles Of course if he's irretrievably damaged you've got 6-9 million hole to fill. Would you do it stick or twist?
  12. "I'd prolly put Cameron in center and move Beltran to a corner," my issue with this is that it's harder to move someone back up the defensive spectrum and that we've a seven year (well six now) commitment to Beltran whereas only one more to Cameron. Also according to Clay Davenport's metrics (if you buy into them) Beltran was above average AND ".... if I was able to say for sure that what I suspect--that the program misappropriated runs for the Met outfield between Beltran and Floyd--was true."

    Duke to O's!

yeah; Duquette got a raw deal, but what's bizarre is how Baltimore's jumped from having 2 gms, to 1, to 2, That combined with the fact that they've brought in Leo Mazzeone's going to make an interesting soap opera next year without too much impact on the mets.
  14. in fairness; he'd be in spring training one way or another at the time of the world classic. I'd love to be able to represent my country - and wouldn't want to stop anyone else - would you?
  15. game over; on dinger by Chris Burke off Joey Devine. Crazy Shit going on in Minute Maid.
  16. Ramon Hernandez is doing a VERY good job of convincing me not to go near him!!! He's let TWO guys score at the plate when the throw has come home from first without the guys having to do anything more then a decent slide. Second one was really brutal.
  17. the thing about saying "the mets need a new 1bman/2bman" is that there's not so many of them about on the FA market this year. There's one 1bman definitely on the trade market in Jim Thome/Ryan Howard. Thome could probably be had for sucking up a large % of the salary, Howard would clearly take talent. If you were to give up (just say) Seo & Petit for Howard, their might be a reason to think about Burnett.
  18. nice little journey that. Wonder will they be saying in the Rittenhouse.
  19. I for one said "no way to Roberto Hernandez" I was way wrong.
  20. unfortunately suicide in the case of schizophrenia is all to often the end game of a somewhat tortured existence. Two of my uncles suffered from schizophrenia until their deaths and to be honest I understand why they chose the path they did. I'll never forget being told (while one of them was going through a particularly bad phase) "not to answer the door to XXX" there's no way either of them would have wanted their doted on nephew to be afraid. Faced with the choice of nullifying their highly capable minds (as the drugs they were prescribed did), struggling with demons or ending their life they both chose the last option. It's funny; it's at least in some way a disease which carries a degree of genetic disposition; it's the one thing that scares me about having children.
  21. for me the key is Valent - we could really use some left handed power AND he can play the OF and 1b so he really should be on the ML team rather then not.
  22. well the thing is ERA is a terrible judge of a reliever's effectiveness [evidence No. 1 - Shinjo Takutsa still has a 0.00 era as a met]. As it takes no account of inherited runners saved or the support from the rest of the pen in terms of bequeathed runners scored. It's better to look at this! http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/sortable/index.php?cid=7837 which show that Bert is our best reliever (although Heillman's second) but MORE IMPORTANTLY that Bert's been the best man at getting other people out of jams - he's saved nearly 7 runs above average for other people![/url]
  23. manager has to hold his hand up there. he got it wrong, not once but twice with the pen.
  24. seriously though, if willie doesn't get the concept of high leverage it's a real problem. He put in two guys who CLEARLY are 6th/7th in the pen territory in the most crucial spot of the game.
  25. that went REALLY REALLY REALLY well didn't it?
