But, yes, I think the offensive upgrade from Hernandez' .119/.133/.119 career line to Matsui's career .265/.320/.380 would be more than the downgrade in defense. If Beltran and Floyd are out for any significant amount of time, the lineup will need all of the offensive upgrades it can get. Are we all sold on the idea that Keppinger'd be an upgrade even offensively? I'm not.
  3. horribly it had Matsui projected at .308 obp .372 slg. god that's grim.
  4. Edgy DC wrote: There we go. There's one nut in the bag. Does anybody have one of those MLE projections of what Anderson Hernandez could be projected to hit going into this season? the 50th percentile of Pecota tabs him at .302 OBP and .361 slugging.
  5. by the way I wasn't saying for a second that Pecota was right, as i said at the outset, I'm just illustrating that i could see a reason why someone might be seeing Zambrano ahead of Trachsel. Anyone who isn't thinking of Brian Bannister as the 5th starter right now is nuts anyway. 2 starts does NOT make a season.
  6. well Tracshel's lifetime era is 4.23, Zambrano's is 4.38 Tracshel's life time era+ [era vs league average] is 1.02, Zambrano's is 1.01 & Tracshel's going on 36 vs Zambrano's going on 31. If you're looking for 'potential upside' it'd be clear that you'd pick Zambrano (especially as he's a later convert to pitching).
  7. i'm not saying your wrong but if you look at the midrange Pecota predictions for Trachsel and Zambrano, they put Zambrano a "notch" ahead of Trachsel. The mean for trachsel in Wins above Replacement is 2.2 whereas Zambrano's on 3.0. Zambrano's also got higher breakout/improvement chances and lower collapse rates. Throw in the fact that the mets control Zambrano next year whereas Trachsel's a free agent and I see a reason why they'd see Zambrano as ahead of Trachsel on the depth chart. It's marginal and everything, but I can see the reasons why. On the other hand, PECOTA tends to be a little harsh on guys who lose a year to a bad back.
  8. there's no real tension between Owen & Rooney. There was during the mid 90's a Liverpool v Man Utd clique within the England squad but even that was over blown. The big problem is that Rooney's a not very intelligent lad, who's very good at blowing a lot of wonga. Alex Ferguson will work him round, he's learnt a lot since he couldn't figure out Paul McGrath. There's been a whole load of funny tabloid stories about Rooney, my favourite in terms of sheer ridiculousness is that when at Everton he went into a brothel in Liverpool, and while he was doing his thing word got out on the streets that he was there. A group of about 30 everton fans gathered round the establishment chanting "Rooonnnneyy, Roooooonnneeey". Time up, young Wayne emerged and 'signed a few autographs'
  9. hey, what kind of connection do people have that are using mlb.tv. I'm out of my main house at the moment (it's being gutted) so I don't have NASN any more and I can't get digital tv in the one I'm staying in for another 2 months or so. That means watching baseball would have to be done by the 'net. I've dsl at home, but I'm a little unsure as to whether it'll all be worthwhile.
  10. someone'll get hit - the way Guillen's gone on it'd be astonishing if they didn't. They'll need to hit first so that the warning gets issued and Pedro'll get thrown out if he retaliates. I'm not saying it's right, but I think there's quite a bit of ballplayer machismo tied up in the 'we gotta sort this out' kinda thing.
  11. so any predictions as to who they'll throw at? Beltran, Delgado, Wright, Floyd or Pedro?
  12. I think Carroll gets WAY to carried away with gossip and doesn't necessarily have the reporter's savvy to know where spin, fact and insinuation overlap or diverge. Having said that, his 'field' is injury reports and some of the stuff he does is both really informative and on the money. He's also replied personally to about 5 emails that i've sent him which makes me give him the benefit of the doubt a bit too I suppose. Also, don't forget, he's looking ALL the time at players for signs of injuries whereas the average beat reporter wouldn't know what to look for let alone what it might be.
  13. Edgy DC wrote: Well, I don't know that there is or isn't more to Wagner's issues than lack of work, but there's more to veloicty than strength. Mike Piazza, I imagine, could arm-wrestle Wagner to dust. Having, or rather feeling, too much power can mess with your form and reduce your control, and, paradoxically, your velocity. That's part of the reason catchers and pitching coaches are always doing that "calm down" motion when they go to the mound. Absolutely - there's so much involved in anything like that; my brother bowls wrist spin pretty well in cricket http://www.channel4.com/sport/cricket/analyst/bowling/ana_63.html it's a very complicated action and he's very good except when he gets a bit hyped up and then he starts over ripping it and losing his release point. I can see it in him before he's released the ball.
  14. from WIll Carroll on BP "The Mets are concerned that ace closer Billy Wagner may be turning into Adam Eaton. Wagners middle finger has a torn tendon sheath, causing him significant pain when throwing, as it doesn't allow him to get the same pulldown on his pitches. That tight backspin is key to his boring fastball; without it, hes a bit more hittable, has lost about five mph on his fastball, and is having control problems. No one seems to be sure whether the injury is something Wagner will just have to adjust to, whether rest will help, or whether surgery is in his future. This is definitely one to watch--focus on his control to better gauge where this is headed."
  15. hallelujah. seriously though, what the fuck was that all about. Bring in anyone but Wagner there. Now you'd have to think he's unlikely to be available in more then 3 out of the next 5 games.
  16. seriously; you'd have to question that. We're going to put enough of a load on Billy's arm, do we really need him going 30 odd pitches for a 6 run lead when we don't have another off day till the 27th April? I mean if Oliver can't pitch here, what's the point.
  17. surely it's Darren Oliver time.
  18. was that vidro fly as close as it looked [on gameday] to getting outta there?
  19. and now with marlon ph'ing for ramon he's outta there. I'd LOVE to work there bullpen REAL hard tonight. Lets make 'em work in the 7th, 8th & 9th. Try and burn a few pitches for tomorrow (especially after 'em going to 12 last night!)
  20. "So now we have to sacrifice our freedom of expression so our teams can be deemed worthy of throwing $100 million dollars at some underachieving jerk? " No, you don't, but you'll understand why Albert PujolsJim Edmonds/Scott Rolen/Mark Mulder will sign in St. Louis for less money then they could get on the open market. [and yes, I know Pujols hasn't been a FA but his 7 year deal was definitely a good one for the cards]
  21. "I think that in some small way they are afraid to boo their home team guys. Possibly they are insecure people residing in a fly-over state and they have a small market mentality. Maybe they think that if they boo, then players won't want to come there and then all they'll have is an ugly piece of post-modern stainless steel to identify with. I don't know. It's a theory." Or maybe they recognise that by having a player friendly atmosphere they've had the opportunity to achieve far above what the Cardinals (going by market size, spending power etc) would be expected to achieve. In Ireland the word "supporter" is interchangeable with "fan". That's how it should be isn't it?
  22. with all these games against the fish & nationals (two TERRIBLE offenses) in 3 great pitcher's parks this is a great year for a no-hitter - or a met pitcher to lead the league in era anyway. I wonder what odds you'd get on Pedro for a Cy Young.
  23. there's something i wanna talk about but I won't for a while.
