  2. I think of When They See Us as four different movies in a series. Because each part is a different style of film-making
  3. =41Forever post_id=30241 time=1579632500 user_id=69] The other surprised me. Dan Shaughnessy from Boston. And last year he only voted for Rivera.
  4. =TransMonk post_id=29803 time=1579133580 user_id=71] Lupita Nyong'o wuz robbed.
  5. I've watched a lot of movies in 2019, but not a lot of movies from 2019. Here's my list with ratings on a 5-star scale: Captain Marvel - **** Us - **** Avengers: Endgame - **** See You Yesterday - ***1/2 When They See Us - **** 63 Up - ***** Spider-Man: Far From Home - ***1/2 Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker- *** Movies I want to see: Apollo 11 Booksmart Frozen II Knives Out The Last Black Man in San Francisco The Lighthouse Little Women Toy Story 4
  6. The fact that sign-stealing has long been a part of the "gamesmanship" of Major League Baseball is why I think that fines, suspensions, and firings will ultimately be meaningless with an effort to address the systemic problem within the game. The narrative that's already forming that the teams that got caught are "cheaters" who didn't deserve to win and other teams are "clean" who deserved to win helps absolutely nothing.
  7. I lost it at Syndergaard.
  8. So does Beltran get a watch as a parting gift?
  9. All good points. My main idea is that people in baseball have been trying to steal signs forever, and if the sign weren't out in the open, they would be harder to steal. I don't think MLB is going to solve a systemic problem by punishing a few individuals, but maybe if they come up with a more secure way of the pitcher & catcher to communicate, then they wouldn't have such a big problem.
  10. Maybe the solution to sign-stealing problems in MLB is to allow the pitcher & catcher to use technology like a smartwatch to communicate? I suppose batters/baserunners would still try to peek but it would be easier to hide from peeping eyes.
  11. I like the Charlie Chaplin movies - The Kid, The Gold Rush, and City Lights. Harold Lloyd's Safety Last and Buster Keaton's The General are also funny with great action sequences. Battleship Potemkin and Man with a Movie Camera are both very interesting from a film history/technical innovation perspective but aren't exactly entertaining movies. Nosferatu is creepy and made me realize that I know very little of Dracula lore. Metropolis and Pandora's Box were slogs but they had their moments. Wings has great flying sequences and the adorable Clara Bow although the movie feels like it was made to be Oscar bait even before the Oscars were invented. The only movie that you mentioned that I've watched before is The Big Parade, but that was in my high school film studies class so I barely remember it.
  12. I DO like old movies. I also like new movies. Starting last summer I've been making a concerted effort to watch some classic movies that I've never seen before. I started in the silent era and I'm up to the early 60s now. There's still a lot of movies I've missed though. So little time.
  13. Shea looks very sculptural in it's skeletal form.
  14. Frayed Knot wrote: I've said this before, but I don't get the purpose behind pre-announcing the 'finalists' for these awards. Kind of goes back to what I was saying in the RnR HOF thread. Announcing that certain artists/bands have been deemed worthy of enshrinement makes sense to me. Announcing that a maximum of five from a long list of artists/bands will be deemed worthy does not. In both cases it's a clickbait approach to gin up virality that I just don't buy into.
  15. A successful manager these days is 90% about the soft skills of making sure all the players feel happy and listened to as well as being the face of the team for the media (and running interference for the players to make them feel happy and listened to when the media is out for blood). I think Beltran is excellent choice under these conditions. The manager as on-field general who has a plan and makes the players listen to him is a thing of the past.
  16. Edgy MD wrote: I thought I remembered your love for The Last Dragon. Thank you for reading that far. To be fair, I haven't watched THE LAST DRAGON in 30+ years, and don't plan to, lest it burst my nostalgia bubble.
  17. The 2001 Mariners are exhibit #1 in my case for why the pennant should be given as an award for the team with the best regular season record in each league rather than the team that advances to the World Series.
  18. A younger retired ballplayer from Puerto Rico taking on his first managing job? It worked for the Red Sox! Welcome back to the Mets, Carlos Beltran!
  19. THE LAST DRAGON is a classic.
  20. My "Astros in 6" was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!!
  21. =smg58 post_id=25588 time=1572527263 user_id=62] Bottom line: the Nats manager put the game in Corbin's hands. The Astros manager trusted the game to somebody not named Gerrit Cole. At least he'll be well rested for whichever teams signs him.
  22. I always conflated Deadspin with Barstool, so I never read it. Apparently, I was way off the mark.
  23. =Fman99 post_id=25443 time=1572400981 user_id=86] =batmagadanleadoff post_id=25441 time=1572400564 user_id=68] The most annoying thing about watching a World Series - any World Series: Do the announcers ever talk about players' season stats? Or at least show them? Because obviously, whatever a player did in his last three games is much more meaningful than what he did over the first 162 games.
  24. My rooting interest: Nationals win tonight, extra inning pitching duel tomorrow!
