  1. ]What about Keith and Ron saying last night that there should be a " Player of the Year" to go with the MVP like there used to be back in the day,it was "The Sporting News PoTY". i've long clamored for something like this. There is a pitcher of the year award, there is an award for defense at each position, but how can their not be a hitter of the year in each league? well, of course, there was such an award.... that was what the mvp was created for. But sportswriters have long since construed "valuable" more narrowly than it was intended, and as a result great seasons have been ignored because they happened on teams that did not "win" sufficiently (wherever that line in the sand may be) Once you have a player of the year award, the MVP becomes an award for the best player or pitcher on the winningest team in each league. Then, the sportswriters can go "intangible" crazy and give it to anybody meeting those criteria, and ignore statistical analysis entirely, if they want. But lets get that award back and honor the singular distinction of being the best hitter in your league. It can be based on a point system (like the Rolaids award), using some version of what marathon has done.
  2. you mean like Fox New's tagline is "fair and balanced"?
  3. a 26-year old slugging 2bman is about to become available! http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-cubanplayer-dominican&prov=ap&type=lgns I know we have other things to think about right now, but this is an important news item about the possibility of solving a much-discussed problem for next year's team.
  4. according to A.Rubin in today's NYPost, Humber is scheduled to pitch Wednesday, not Dave Williams.
  5. soupcan wrote: ="Yancy Street Gang"]At least it hasn't made me surly or short-tempered. Years ago, it might have. Unfortunately I'm not as evolved. Few years back, losses would really eat away at me to the point where they really did effect me in other areas of my life - surly, short-tempered, etc. - After realizing it I made it a point to try to not be SO involved/invested that it effects my personality. I've gotten better but apparently Yancy's a few years ahead of me. This last week hasn't helped much either. Not only am i not as evolved as either of you, i'm DE-volving. I used to take losses more easily. When you're young, you think your indestructible and immortal, and a loss today will be followed by a win tomorrow. but as the days and years go by, my sense of creeping mortality makes me LESS patient, not MORE patient, with the pain of loss. And no amount of victory salves the wound anymore. so, why do i do it? The same reason a junkie does. Even though the highs aren't nearly as good as they used to be, and the lows make him physically sick, and in fact the veins are starting to collapse, he keeps looking for his next fix, because addiction is one tough bitch.

  7. geez... this thing is going down to the wire.
  8. i just don't know why i do this to myself... i really don't. the joy i get from seeing the Mets win is greatly exceeded by the pain i feel when they lose. i should just stop it. just walk away, and never look back. but i can't. somebody help me....
  9. what makes this any more complicated or difficult than the X-men movies or Fantastic Four? the fact that 2 of the JLA, superman and batman, are currently featured in their own series of films. they probably need to coordinate productions and storylines (and possibly casts) so they don't conflict with each other.
  10. George Miller to lead 'Justice League' WB moves ahead with bigscreen adaptation By DIANE GARRETT / Variety Warner Bros. is moving aggressively ahead with the bigscreen adaptation of DC Comics Justice League of America, with George Miller on board to direct. Project, which is the initial phases of casting, is a pre-strike priority for the studio, which needs a superhero tentpole in 2009. Still, making all the pieces fit has been complicated by overlapping superhero projects in the pipeline, since Justice League features a pantheon of superheroes, including Superman and Batman. Batman and Superman are active properties for the studio, though the next installment in the Superman franchise has taken a backseat to Justice League in part because Warners is so keen on the Justice League script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney. Justice League will likely feature the characters of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash and Aquaman. Warners is in the preliminary phases of casting for Justice League. Several sources close to the project said that Christian Bale, star of the revived Batman film franchise, and Brandon Routh, star of Bryan Singers Superman Returns, would probably not appear in the movie. However, helmer Chris Nolan, current steward of the Batman franchise for the studio, would prefer that Warners delay Justice League until after he finishes Batman projects in development; Bale has also let his uneasiness about Justice League be known. To work around these issues, the studio explored making Justice League as an animated film or with motion capture, but all indications are that the film will be special-effects driven live action. The project is so complicated -- and casting dependent -- that even those deeply involved in the project are holding their breath until production begins. Theyre working very hard to get it to happen, said one party close to the project. But there are so many characters its complicated. It was for this very reason that many believed Warners would move ahead first with a follow-up to Bryan Singers Superman Returns. Singer, however, is busy with Tom Cruise starrer Valkyrie. Miller has a warm relationship with Warners. He last helmed Happy Feet, which generated $379 million worldwide box office for the studio.

  13. i'm not comfortable with only Gotay backing up the entire IF. I'd like to see Marlon Anderson make the roster, too, as an IF-OF/LH-pinch hitter-runner.

  18. I'm helping a friend compile a list of good songs originally presented in cartoons or animated features, but NOT including Disney stuff. She's putting together a cabaret piece, a "cartoon cabaret" as it were, so they should be songs appropriate for a one female performer to sing. Anybody have any suggestions? 19. Dale Murphy Black Ink - 31 (Average HOFer ≈ 27) Gray Ink - 147 (Average HOFer ≈ 144) HOF Standards - 34.3 (Average HOFer ≈ 50) HOF Monitor - 115.5 (Likely HOFer > 100; VERY likely HOFer >130) Murphy has a good argument to be in the HOF, with numbers better than the average HOFer in 3 of these 4 categories. From 1980-87, he was one of the best players in baseball. It was just that his career completely collapsed after age 31, playing all or part of 6 more seasons as a strictly sub-par player. He had a high peak, but a precipitous drop. But i do think he should get more attention than he does.
  20. Juan Gonzalez Black Ink - 17 (Average HOFer ≈ 27) Gray Ink - 105 (Average HOFer ≈ 144) HOF Standards - 39.1 (Average HOFer ≈ 50) HOF Monitor - 120.5 (Likely HOFer > 100; VERY likely HOFer >130) I'd say Thome has a better shot, and Thome is borderline. Plus, Juan Gone was largely perceived by the press (ie, the HOF voters) as an a-hole.
  21. is it too soon to move Tejada to 2b?
  22. They probably figure their marriage has nowhere to go but up! It's like that scene in GARP, where the plane flies into the house, so Garp decides to buy it because its been "pre-disaster-ed". Yeah, Soupy, that was me in the grey shirt. I didn't hear you. We were in box 215, which was probably right behind you, in the first box above the walkway. Their not my seats.. i buy them from a guy i know, though, so i get 3-4 games/yr from him. I love those seats. But not on days like that.
  23. Jon Matlack was a guest at my little league awards breakfast in 1973. I remember thinking, "wow... this guy looks like Lurch!"
  24. Jim Thome Black Ink - 13 (Average HOFer ≈ 27) Gray Ink - 112 (Average HOFer ≈ 144) HOF Standards - 49.3 (Average HOFer ≈ 50) HOF Monitor - 127.5 (Likely HOFer > 100; VERY likely HOFer >130) He's borderline. He's the type of guy that will be hurt by being a DH much of the time.
  25. Soupy, did that suck or what? Fortunately, i had to go pick up my son by 5, so we left after the 7th. But my daughter is hardcore. She wanted to stay till the bitter end, and she pouted in the car until the final out. 6 errors, 11 walks. Man. That had to be the worst game i've ever seen them play in person.
