  1. my parents really wanted to rent out their basement to Cyclone players. They passed away before they got the chance.
  2. No one here is any position to second-guess the players about who is or is not a "good coach". But I think a new manager, hired by a new gm, should have whatever pitching coach he wants, notwithstanding who likes or doesn't like the current coach.
  3. how can they now possibly broach the topic of right field with him given the erosion in goodwill? uh, you start by hiring a GM who hires a manager who says: "Carlos, you're in RF now." Good will doesn't enter into the equation. He gets $18.5m, and he'll play where the manager tells him to play. It's not like they're asking him to pitch.
  4. i think Kay heard wrong... what was actually said was that the Mets manager would be jumped in the parking lot and GIVEN a melvin.
  5. write me in for "rooting for injuries".
  6. Dillon Gee... not quite as good as Dillon Eff.

  8. Is baseball still being played? J-e-t-s- JETS JETS JETS!
  9. yeah, whatever happened to that Vic Sage feller?
  10. So, i'm watching the game against Atlanta the other night, and the boys in the booth are once again defending Frenchy, when Burkhardt asks how many runs did his arm save, in a way that suggested the self-evident answer was enough to justify Frenchy's presence in a major league lineup. I threw up a little in my mouth. So today i read Pat flood's blog, and he deals with the issue. http://www.patrickfloodblog.com/2010/09/how-many-runs-did-jeff-francoeurs-arm-save.html i feel better now.
  11. that's a preponderance, under the civil standard of proof.
  12. I saw Duda play in Buffalo last week. He looked pathetic against AAAA LHer Rich Hill's good curve ball. Maybe it was just an off night, or maybe the guy hasn't yet learned to hit LHers or good breaking stuff. I don't see the point of force-feeding him a diet of major league pitching quite yet.
  13. The Sage family drove up to Niagara Falls for a vacation last week. While we were in the area, we went to a Bisons game in Buffalo last wednesday night. We got lost driving there ("oh, you'll see it, it's right off the highway", said the concierge. "Fuck you, concierge" says I, driving around desolate downtown Buffalo, getting conflicting directions from various inbred goobers), so we didn't get there til the top of the 3rd, and they were alreadly losing 3-0 to Pawtucket Red Sox. But, on the other hand, it was "Fernando Martinez bobblehead night", and we had great seats, so that took the sting away. Of course, the sting came back when we learned that Martinez was out on the DL (quel supriz!). Also, there was some drizzle soon after we sat in our nice box seats, so we ended up retreating to the rear under the overhang. As for the game, our old friend Raul Valdez was pitching, and not doing too badly despite the score. key hits from Nick Evans and Andy Green put us within striking distance by the 8th, 3-2. Then i got to see big Val Pascucci launch one into the net above the LF wall at lovely Coca Cola Field, to tie the score going into the 9th. Then Sean Green blew it in the 10th, and some miscellaneous reliever followed him and gave up a grand salami to a good Sox prospect, the CFer, whose name i forget. Impressions: - Nick Evans is playing well, and should be up with the big boys; - They had Andy Green in the OF and he had a couple of big hits; - Captain Kirk Nieuwenhuis hasn't hit in AAA yet, but he made a great HR-robbing catch in CF; - Val Pascucci is built like Paul Bunyan; - Lucas Duda did nothing against LHed curve-baller Rich Hill. There's no reason to think he won't get eaten up by LHers with a decent breaking ball in the majors, so lets not rush him; - the concession stand sold fried bologna sandwiches; - when we got the Fernando bobbleheads home, we found one of them to be broken, which made it an incredible likeness! Despite the weather, directions and outcome, fun was had by all. I love minor league ball.
  14. SCHADENFREUDE (SHAAD-n-froi-duh) (noun) = Pleasure derived from others' misfortunes. Etymology Schaden = damage (from Middle High German schade , from Old High German scado) + Freude = joy (from Middle High German vreude , from Old High German frewida , from fr?, happy). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HEE HEE HEE
  15. that trade was almost universally lauded at the time McReynolds... Chainsaw... long, slow strokes... ahhh, that's better. What were you saying?
  16. Some of these guys have been gone years don't underestimate the ability of a fan to hold a grudge. After all, many Mets fans are descended from former Brooklyn Dodger fans who used the word "O'Malley" like an epithet.
  17. I think Mazz, but he may have gone to Lincoln.

Frayed Knot wrote: Even from the 'Fugly' list I like: - Play Misty for Me (1971) -- Back when all the fuss was being made upon the release of 'Fatal Attraction' I was stunned that hardly a mention was made that it lifted virtually its entire plot from PMfM, right down to the abused pet - Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) -- not a great flick, but took a good source and, while changing it a bit, still kept it interesting and worked in the Mercer music well - Absolute Power (1997) -- A lesser D.C. political-based caper movie than 'Line of Fire', but not bad - Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) -- much better than 'Flags of our Fathers' Fuglies: MISTY, POWER = mediocre hits MIDNIGHT, LETTERS = interesting flops By the way, I neglected to mention that Clint, an accomplished musician, also wrote songs and/or scores for many of his movies over the last 25 years. I was trying to think of the last Hollywood filmmaker who was an actor-director-producer-composer, and all i can think of is Charlie Chaplin (who also wrote and edited most of his films as well), but even he didn't do a project every 10 months for 45 years.
  20. fuck McReynolds. fuck him with a power saw.
  21. i'm not sure i get why they traded LaRoche in the first place. A good glove, some pop, decent and consistent production year after year. I'm hoping Ike Davis turns into him.
  22. in making the good/bad/fugly lists, i thought "gee, there's alot of crap and flawed stuff here for a great filmmaker". But when you think about how much work he did, directing 31 films over less than 40 years, while acting in another 14 movies over that period, it works out to 45 projects. And if you add his acting work in the 1960s, thats about 54 projects in about 45 years... averaging 1 every 10 months! That's ridiculous. Even busy directors generally put out a movie every 18-24 months or so, and those folks aren't also acting in and producing their own movies, as well as those of other directors. Clearly, this was a man who'd rather be working than wait around for the right script, and even his "bad" stuff isn't unwatchable... well, except for BREEZY, PAINT YOUR WAGON and maybe PINK CADILLAC... while much of his "good" stuff is not just good but great.
  23. OJW is both hugely entertaining and critically "significant", it's the only truly great western made during the 23-year period from WILD BUNCH (1969) to UNFORGIVEN (1992) (even including DANCES WITH WOLVES). The only false note is the regrettable presence of Sondra Locke, who diminished all of his movies during this period. But insofar as she plays a moron, she doesn't do too much harm... it's type casting. but it is stylish, humorous and profound as anything he's ever done.
