  1. yeah, i'm sick of all this "buy-high-sell-low" thinking.
  2. i had him 4th, behind Longoria.
  3. freakin' Cano. He can suck Longoria's nutsack.
  4. 3 for 3, with 3 trifectas... 1 to go. i think this is the one where i go down.
  5. and just for the record, i had picked it as follows: *AL MVP: Josh Hamilton / Miguel Cabrera / Evan Longoria *NL MVP: Joey Votto / Albert Pujols / Carlos Gonzalez So, i had picked Votto too, but i have no beef with Longoria over Hamilton. I think your methodology got good results for less than good reasons.
  6. i love this. and i've been saying it for years. the fact is when the MVP was designed and named, it was a more genteel and literate age. Sportswriters waxed poetical. When they said "valuable", they simply meant "best", since how could the best player not be the most valuable one? The early MVP voting bears this out, too. It was only in later years that writers became overly narrow in their interpretation and started giving out the award primarily to the best players on the best teams, with fewer exceptions. the notion that a player should be either rewarded or penalized because his teammates were great or terrible (beyond the rewards and penalties of winning and losing), and be discounted for INDIVIDUAL awards because his TEAM was inadequate, or be carried to INDIVIDUAL glory carried on the backs of superior teammates, is just lunacy. what is being honored then? "clutchness"? it doesn't exist. And if this is NOT the award for the best player, what is? the Hank Aaron? please.
  7. Sometimes the run support isnt there, but you sometimes just find ways to win games. yes, because some pitchers are "winners"; they have a metaphysical ability that supercedes others, rendering them morally superior. That a winning pitcher would say this, of course, does not surprise me, as it constitutes self-aggrandizement of nearly megomaniacal proportions. But when sportswriters and fans repeat this tripe, romanticizing "winners" with superhuman qualities.... it makes me wanna hurl, and has poisoned the way we look at athletes for far too long. If quantitative analysis has done anything to combat this, i'm as happy as a fly on a turd.
  8. I'm still pushing for the MBot 5000
  9. so was the NL Cy voting... I'm 6 for 6, calling those 2 categories in order. I don't think i'll be that lucky in the MVP balloting.
  10. first, the Mets hire a front office of Alderson-Depodesta-Ricciardi, then, King Felix wins the AL CY over CC... yes, folks, it's morning in Mets-America! I'm practically giddy with a nearly unbearable lightness of being.
  11. King Felix wins, and the troglodytae go bonkers! 2 for 2, and counting...
  12. What would be absoutely perfect, IMO, is a big beer garden with tvs. when would this not be true?
  13. oh, the m`Bot is ready! Hire [crossout:1ln1metw]him[/crossout:1ln1metw] it, Sandy!
  14. Listen up Sandy, here's my FA list (assuming Lee, Crawford and V-Mart are not gonna happen): SP - Ill take Garland for the IP, and take a flyer on Capuano's upside. Harden? I'm not that crazy. C - Torrealba or Olivo, to platoon with Thole. LHRP - having lost 2 LHRPs, we need one from column A (Downs, Fuentes) and one from column B (Romero, DReyes, Beimel, Ohman) 2b - with Uggla gone, no obvious upgrades available, tho' i wouldn't mind Hudson for a year, or taking a flyer on LLopez as a general UT. or i'll take Lee, Crawford and V-Mart...
  15. Citifield hurts certain XBH (hr) and helps others (2b,3b). Marlins stadium isnt exactly a launching pad either and a 2bman with nearly a .900 OPS over 5 full seasons there can botch grounders for me anytime. And, frankly, he's not that bad a glove. The fact that Altanta got him for a UT coming off a career year and a young LHRP with more BB than IP is a great get for them, and just made our division that much tougher. Oh, well. Turner / Murphy will be just as good (yeah, right).
  16. If they can both field the position no worse than barely adequately, a Turner / Murphy platoon could actually work for this year, while Tejada learns how to hit playing SS in AAA and Havens learns to play a full season in AA. It would maximize their strengths, and surely result in something significantly better than the worst production at the position in all of MLB. Adding either of them to Evans and Carter would also give us a bunch of versatile bats off the bench. Add 1 UT glove and a backup catcher, and it would be good to go.
  17. there is a name for a government that uses its power on behalf of private commercial interests at the expense of individuals. It used to be called fascism. Now, it includes our own bailout nation. National socialism for the rich, laissez-faire for everybody else.
  18. Edgy, you should sticky this thread, so people can see it at the top each day and add to it as they see fit...
  19. I tell you what. We've got a smart, experienced management team in place... for a change. They're engaged in a process that seems thorough, transparent and professional, and they know a hell of a lot better than anyone here what is needed at the helm for this current roster, and for the type of team they'd like to field going forward, and who these guys really are. Since we have no real vested interest in any of these candidates (it's not like Bobby V is in the running), i'm all for deferring judgment on the outcome of the process to those entrusted with the decision. "Nightmare"? "Stinking up the joint"? please. take a pill and calm down. Its the manager, not the 2bman.
  20. lets agree to disagree...
  21. 1 down, 3 to go...
  22. batmagadanleadoff wrote: I'd like Dan Uggla. I liked Kevin Mitchell at short. And Melvin Mora. You can't win if you don't put runs on the board. batmags / sage similarity score = 98.634
  23. I think we have too many internal options at 2B... yeah, but none of them are very good options.
  24. With Tejada, if everything goes right, and he learns how to take a walk, he's a poor man's Castillo. If it goes wrong, he's Jose Lind. Turner has some legit thump, and is much readier to play right now.
  25. While i'd be happy to have Bobby V back, cuz he's done it here before, clearly that's not going to happen. So, i'd be just as happy with a low cost / low profile "middle manager" type who has a track record of staying the hell out of the way (i.e., doesn't give away outs) and evinces a willingness to bring the hammer down on underperforming players (ie., make them accountable with playing time), both as a surrogate for my frustration and as motivation to the rest of the roster. With that in mind, these are the things that mean absolutely nothing to me in searching for the next Mets manager: 1) genius-osity; 2) ability to "handle NY"; 3) philosophy (beyond doing what Sandy tells him - ie., not giving away outs); 4) playing pedigree; 5) Met-liness; 6) military service; 7) "grit"; 8) willingness to yell (at umps, media, players, owners, fans); or 9) "star" quality
