  1. What package would we have that's close to that? Either way, I never wanted Soriano, so I'm pleased.
  2. Biggio coached at the Smithtown East summer baseball camp that I attended when I was a kid, so I thought it was just about the coolest thing ever when he made the major leagues. Congrats to him.
  3. Seeya, Bert. Thanks for the memories, and I hope you enjoy your 5.48 ERA in 2006 somewhere else in the NL East.
  4. The four southpaws who have thrown the most lefty innings in Mets history were involved in transactions on this day in history:New York Mets traded Jon Matlack and John Milner to the Texas Rangers for Willie Montanez, Ken Henderson and Tom Grieve on December 8, 1977.New York Mets traded Jerry Koosman to the Minnesota Twins for Jesse Orosco and Greg Field on December 8, 1978.New York Mets traded Bob Bailor and Carlos Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Sid Fernandez and Ross Jones on December 8, 1983.Florida Marlins signed Al Leiter of the New York Mets as a free agent on December 8, 2004.(Barry Zito, anyone?)
  5. The Pirates ended the season with two Redmans; they will begin 2006 with none, as lefty Mark Redman was dealt to KC for a minor leaguer. Adding a guy who went 5-15 last year to a team that lost 100 games ain't gonna be pretty.
  6. metirish wrote: I was at a winter( union) meeting today at work and some guys there told me Zito will be a Met before sunrise.... Irish apparently is in the same union as Valadius's dad.
  7. From Jim Caple: The Top 10 Things The Mets Have Done to Piss Off Anna Benson 10. With the loss of Mike Piazza to free agency and the trade of Mike Cameron, the Mets are getting rid of all the really cute teammates. 9. Kris' crude teammates keep inviting her to join them in the showers after a game. 8. The Mets stubbornly refuse to employ Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue models as their batboys. 7. For a photo spread in the team program, the Mets marketing department asked her to pose topless with a pants-less Mr. Met. 6. When they go to strip clubs, Kris' unpatriotic teammates refuse to stand for their lap dances. 5. Unpatriotic concession stands refuse to rename the fries "freedom fries." 4. General manager Omar Minaya asked, "If I said you have a great body, would you hold it against me?" 3. She's still upset about finding out they didn't sign with the New York team Rudy Giuliani roots for. 2. For the 19th consecutive season, the unpatriotic Mets didn't visit the president in the White House. And the No. 1 Thing The Mets Have Done To Piss Off Anna Benson ... 1. Shea Stadium still sucks.

  9. No mention in this museum of his extensive porn collection? ]Flash just isn't Matsui's style, even if the conservative Giants hadn't frowned on such outr displays. Instructed to stay in the team dormitory and refrain from dating during the first several years of his career, so as to devote all his concentration solely to baseball, Matsui agreeably complied, without so much as a whimper. Indeed, his only eccentricity, if it can be called that, is his extensive private library of adult videos. His refreshing ability to laugh self-deprecatingly about his porno collection, reporters say, is one reason why fans and even nonfans have taken to him so much.
  10. I just noticed that there's a Matsui in that photo (#91). "Matsui" must translate roughly to "Smith."
  11. Grady got crucified for the Pedro thing, perhaps unfairly; I don't really know. Guess it's just another old-boys-club managerial hiring.
  12. That was scary for a minute.
  13. I thought Dan Norman led that invasion.
  14. He did say "maybe," guys. Cool out. What if we change abog's original statement to add the fact that those were his only years in a Met uniform? All those other guys (Piazza, Seaver, Kooz, Straw, Gooden, whoever) had a down year or two also. Ol' Johnny 5 came here, kicked ass for three years, then strode off into the deep, dark night. I don't think anyone else did that.
  15. You may know him better as... Keith Richards.

  17. That was fun to read; nice job by GB.
  18. If Duke Snider were dead, he'd be spinning in his grave.
  19. "The Duke" of Brooklyn is Duke Snider. Get your little punch-and-judy catcher out of his nickname territory.
  20. Oh. I just thought you were losing it, 62; I figured I'd just give everyone deja vu. Sharpie didn't hold up his end.
  21. Excellent. I had never heard of him, so I didn't click him on the list. Thanks.
  22. Good research, V. Who's the March 8 Met? I didn't think I found one for myself.
  23. My wife's birthday is much Metlier than mine: she shares with Jeff Duncan, Tony Tarasco, Mike Fyhrie, Juan Samuel, Bruce Boisclair, Doc Medich, Jerry Cram, Del Unser, and almost-Met Todd Van Poppel. That eight has to be some kind of record.
  24. I know Andruw Jones covers a lot of ground, but I think the Netherlands are going to be a bit overmatched.
