  2. It's kinda like when your crazy, drunk old Uncle Jack starts throwing political discourse around the holiday dinner table; you might agree with him, but you can't do it at that particular moment, because he's an ass and nobody will ever take him seriously. In fact, you don't say anything at all, because anything you say sets him off, embarassing the whole family. You're the CPF's crazy old Uncle Sal. You're part of the family, and you bring character to the room, but the discussion is so much more enjoyable when you're passed out in front of the TV.
  3. No, I think this is a situation where we're only saying no because the person who started the poll is acting like an ass.
  4. I have a mancrush on David Wright and I'm not afraid to admit it. I still make that trade; it's a no-brainer. But nobody, not even the Marlins, are dumb enough to make that deal.
  5. 52 times since divisional play began in 1969, a team has started the season 7-1. 25 times those teams made the playoffs. This, of course, means absolutely nothing.
  6. He's not as ugly as Willie McGee. Or The Elephant Man.
  7. Exactly. When Zambrano is "on," he's scary good. The problem is that you never have any clue when he's going to be "on" and when he's going to give up fourteen hits and eight walks in five innings. It's a risk/reward scenario: Zambrano's best days are going to be better than Trax's best days, but they both can be lit up.
  8. Right, the Willie thread. Got it.

  10. From the Neat Promotions That Are Really Just A Way To Sell More Jerseys Department: From Uni Watch: July 29 at Miller Park is "Cerveceros Day." For Cerveceros Day, the Brewers will again wear alternate uniforms for their game against the Cincinnati Reds, and they plan to transform Miller Park with bilingual public address announcements, Latin-themed music and videos featuring some of the game's great Hispanic players. Instead of the traditional "Brewers" script, players will wear jerseys with the Spanish version, "Cerveceros." Brewers great Teddy Higuera (pictured above) and Milwaukee Braves infielder Felix Mantilla will be honored at the game. Cerveceros Day will take place in conjunction with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's Fiesta Tailgate. For information about a ticket package that includes pregame entertainment and food, call (414) 643-6963. The first 15,000 fans will receive a free "Cerveceros" cap courtesy of Culver's, which is sponsoring the event. Telemundo, which hosts Spanish-language broadcasts of weekend Brewers games throughout the season, is serving as a media partner for Cerveceros Day. Proceeds from the online jersey auction will benefit the Wisconsin Hispanic Scholarship Fund, the Phillip Arreola Scholarship Fund and the Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee Scholarship Fund.
  11. There's no way Gil Hodges lets Wagner blow that save last week.
  12. Wow, Elster's right... the ESPN GameCast is way better. They totally f'ed it up last year, so I got addicted to the Sportsline version; but this one's neat. Looks like they rebuilt it from scratch; very fancy.
  13. There's magic in the air this season, isn't there?
  14. Elster88 wrote: ]when he was whining about the boos, and bitching about the love he needed from those rotten stinking demanding fans? You're exaggerating. Eh, maybe not as much as usual. Willie Randolph addressed that on M&MD regarding the curtain call issue yesterday; he basically said that Beltran was upset at the fans with the boos, and that might have been the reason why he originally ignored the curtain call.
  15. Elster88 wrote: ="seawolf17"]="Rotblatt"]I thought it was supposed to be HARD to hit a home run in Washington. Not off this pitching staff. Livan, at least, is a good pitcher. Who allows a wacky number of hits every year, a decent number of which fly out of the park. (I know, he throws more innings than other teams' entire pitching staffs, so he's of course more likely to have a higher hits allowed total.)

  17. [elvis]Thank you. Thank you very much.[/elvis]
  18. That's because Pedro is Latino and Nady is white. (sc=100) edit: Crap, this started a new page. Now I look like a racist ass.
  19. Bret Sabermetric wrote: Does Pedro spread his strategy around to the guy who pitches the night before he does? I have no factual basis for saying this, but I'd bet that yes, he does.
  20. We heard you the first two times, Yance.
  21. I don't know that a two-hour session is going to accomplish anything, because (a) that's Rick Peterson's job, and ( Pedro's a different pitcher than the rest of the staff. Tom Glavine can't do what Pedro does; neither can Trax or Billy Wagner or anyone else. And besides, it takes more than a Mensa membership to be a great pitcher.
  22. Bret Sabermetric wrote: They should offer a virtual banner day. You make up a webpage with your message on it, e-mail a link to Shea (or Prep-H or whatev stadium), they get to screen it (for hidden obscenities, or derogatory Met-Hating "Grant's Tomb"-type messages), they assign you a number, you show up two hours early, and they've printed it out on a sheet of 5' x 5' oak tag, which you pick up by the assigned number, and you go parade it through the Park. No schlepping, no size or visibility problems, no "wrong" messages, everyone's happy, the nostalgists, the anti-nostalgists, everyone. The could even skip the parade part and just show them on the Diamondvision thing in about two and a half minutes, cuttng down on the whole consumption of time problem. Not that they've got the brains to do this or anything, but this would be the way to go. It's too sanitary for my tastes, but I think this is a really neat idea. There's no way they absorb the cost of printing those banners, though.
  23. Martinez 6 Beltran 1 Delgado 1 Floyd 0.5 Wright 0.5 Heilman 0.5 Wagner 0.5
  24. Vidro ties it with a solo HR to "deep right."
