  1. Henry Owens has a blue-hat photo on his 2006 Topps insert card: This was the only image I could find, but I'll try to track down a bigger scan.
  2. Didn't Dan Quisenberry sign some sort of lifetime deal with the Royals back in the early 80s? I remember that being a big deal. Not big dollars, iirc, but I remember a "lifetime" tag. I know he finished his career in St. Louis, though. So perhaps I've lost my mind. And maybe it has nothing to do with your original point. Sorry. I'll stop typing now.

Urg. Don't think I like this one at all.
  4. That is a great story. Nice!
  5. Who schedules a wedding during the World Series? Fools.
  6. I agree with Vic (I think). I had much higher expectations for Florida than most; I thought they had very good young pitching, and some guys who were ready to pop at the plate. Combine that with the fact that they were playing with house money -- everyone expected them to lose 100, so they stayed loose all year (well, everyone except Scott Olsen), and played well. Credit them -- and I guess credit Girardi as well -- for keeping them up and ready to win every night.
  7. ]ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays won the negotiating rights to Japanese star third baseman Akinori Iwamura on Wednesday, submitting a winning bid of about $4.5 million for the power hitter. On Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox paid $51.1 million for the rights to talk to Japanese star pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. The Devil Rays have 30 days to finalize a contract with Iwamura. If he is not signed by Dec. 15, Tampa Bay gets its money back and Iwamura returns to play in Japan. Iwamura, 27, was a five-time All-Star in eight seasons with the Yakult Swallows. A left-handed hitter, he batted .311 with 32 homers and 77 RBI in 145 games last season. Iwamura was Japan's starting third baseball in the World Baseball Classic last spring. He was a six-time Gold Glove winner. Iwamura hit 188 homers with 570 RBI in eight seasons with Yakult. He hit at least 30 home runs in each of the past three years and set a Swallows record for most homers by a Japanese native with 44 in 2004. So who gets more out of their investment? Nice move by the Devil Rays.
  8. In exchange for the $51 million, the Japanese baseball league agreed to fly everyone over there for cannoli.
  9. I wish I could read what our colleagues at SoSH are saying about this one.
  10. I wouldn't argue with Craig Wilson. Dude can hit.
  11. Count me out for now... I was stretched too thin between this and my other league. There's a good chance I'm going to disband my other league, though, so I might beg back in as it gets closer.
  12. I'd be available and willing if they're interested. I should send my resume over. I make a great 3b coach for my sister's ambulance corps softball team.
  13. Good for Biggio. One of my favorite players ever.
  14. I'd take him as a Duck. That'd be fun. We loved it when Rickey came to town.
  15. Is there anyone in baseball history who's been as much of a problem child as Sheffield? Seems like he's played for eighteen teams, and every team he's been on, he's been a headache. But his bat still earns him the big payday. Fascinating.
  16. It doesn't matter to me. I'm calling it Bob Murphy Stadium.

The first six that came to mind was Melvin Mora, he wasn't around long enough. Are we allowed to at least look at the list on MBTN?
  19. Does he still have his curveball? Invite him to spring training.
  20. I'll partially take back what I said about Aurilia; he had a surprisingly good 2006. He had a $1.3 million contract last year; if we can get him cheap, a la Jose Valentin, I'd take him.
  21. We won 97 games with LoDuca batting second. He bats second. Get Rich Freaking Aurilia off this team.
  22. They're having a Festivus concert this year... starring Cheap Trick, Soul Asylum, and Fastball. That's not a bad lineup. I wouldn't pay for it, but I'd certainly call in and try to win if someone was giving away tickets.
  23. The Dugout's take on the issue. That site makes me laugh every day.
  24. Problem is, aren't the Cleveland Spiders mostly associated with losing something like 247 games in a single season? Not a happy connotation.
