  1. Howie Rose just directed the listening audience to "a great website called uniwatch-dot-blog." Way to go, Howie. Next inning, he plans to discover The Google.

I don't want to see them wear these all or even part-time, but for a weekend they're kinds of neat. Kong76 Aug 14 2009 06:50 PM Barry run, goshdarn I'm glad the Mets didn't fall into that trap of a contract. John Cougar Lunchbucket Aug 14 2009 07:30 PM That's the way (uh-huh, uh-huh) I like it bmfc1 Aug 14 2009 07:32 PM Wow, that was a nice win. Short pitcher's duel, just the way I like it. Think it was the shortest game of the year. The new video boards are working but I couldn't tell you what they're like as I just see the main boards from my seats. No sign of the improvement to the OOT scoreboard yet. Pictures in the concourse are great but they have Nikon logos on them. Couldn't we just honor the Mets without another corporate sponsor or advertisement? Uniforms are possibly the ugliest things I've seen in many a year on the Mets (black jerseys and hats excepted). G-Fafif Aug 14 2009 10:44 PM Hail to the banners. Hail to the '69 and '86 corner displays, miniaturized as they are versus the Shea versions. Hail to the RF video screen which was a big bleeping help. Hail to etching 1969 Mets into the grass. Hail to the blue and orange Cow Parade cow in the Prom food court (part of a salute to Flushing). Hail even to the uni tops that didn't match the uni bottoms because they clothed winners. I didn't see all the Promenade imagery despite looking. I did see my first game from the Pepsi Porch in the company of Met Fairy and DGW along with the man who brings you perhaps the funnest for Met obsessives blog Mets Walk-Offs[/url:25n0jahi]. Got there way early and discovered virtually no line for the Shake Shack, which hence couldn't be resisted. A great night for yours truly and Bobby Parnell. G-Fafif Aug 14 2009 11:41 PM Ah, within the seating bowls. I circled the concourses and came up empty. Hell, it's something. Gwreck Aug 15 2009 09:00 AM Nope -- in the concourse. The old timey uniforms aren't the Mets' best look. But if they continue to have 2:19 shutouts while wearing them, then they can wear 'em forever. Bobby Parnell - David Wright -
  3. Sure, it's "refreshing" to hear guys like Arroyo come out openly like this, but really, it underlines the whole problem. Professional athletes are mollycoddled their whole lives these days; they have access to the finest facilities, charter planes, luxury hotel suites, meal money, and groupies. Of course they feel a sense of entitlement that they don't have to play by the same rules as the rest of society, or even of their peers.

Frayed Knot Aug 12 2009 07:43 PM I heard some geek on ESPN radio (don't even know who) saying the exact same thing today: 'if Jeter's dirty I'm done with baseball' Two things; 1) Grow the Fuck up!! 2) Most ESPN geeks or similar nationally-oriented sports guys hate baseball anyway and statements like this are just an excuse to either knock the sport or brag about how you're thisclose to giving it up. Latching onto Jeter is an attempt at claiming 'old skool cred' because he's the guy (or so they've been told) who represents a "throwback" [ooh how I hate that term] to when all baseball players were pure and good and never switched teams or made a lot of money so that they can claim to be making a moral judgement against a sport gone wrong. All of which leads us back to: Grow the Fuck Up!! Edgy DC Aug 12 2009 10:16 PM You know, I'm thinking a bit here, and it's not like I have a single figure in front of me, but I'm thinking that --- with his work as a pitchman, with his putting his name on cologne and buttspray, with the sales of futures on his DNA --- Jeter probably makes more lettuce than A-Rod or any other ballplayer when tax time comes around. It seems to me that we've been burned by approximately the last 487 of them we've called for. OK my math may be a little off, but it's become almost automatic when a 8th place hitter comes up with men on which suxx because: - we've been giving up far too many hits to pitchers - even when you do get the pitcher out you've still done the other team a favor by clearing that spot for them to start the next inning. 8. You know, I don't listen to Michael Kay, and I remembered why today -- I flipped to him to get away from Mike Francesa sucking Joe Girardi's dick this afternoon, and stumbled across Don LaGreca saying that "there's no reason why the Mets shouldn't be a playoff-caliber team right now. I mean, they've got their everyday catcher out there in Schneider, they've got their second baseman in Castillo, and they've got David Wright at third base every day." And stopped there. 10. I can't fathom why the Mets would waste money and at-bats on Mark Grudzielanek.

(And if they're not on board... well, isn't his supposed rapport with them counted among Manuel's strengths as a manager?) Because you "can't sell that to fan base that still expects to win." I know that we don't expect that, but the nebulous "Mets fan base" expects to "win every year" or they're going to "go to the movies" instead of coming to the ballpark. I say go for it, though. 19. ="Rockin' Doc":1owguwap]I had a similar thought regarding the number of injuries in the wake of increased steroid testing and penalties. Edgy DC Aug 06 2009 07:26 AM It used to be believed that steroids were causing all the muscle injuries. Now we're to believe that lack of steroids is doing it? And what's being implied? Some of these things we're too close to. And the answers aren't so simple. Remember how many corner outfielders were lost one on top of the other last year? Alou, Pagan, Church, Anderson, Chavez. Bam-bam-bam-bam-bam! We were looking to the likes of Chris Aguila, Trot Nixon, and Andy Phillips to save our bacon. Nixon went down with a groin injury also. Was that all roids or lack of roids? Lee Mazzilli pulled his back turning to talk to somebody on the bench. Heith Hernandez was two pretty good years away from the Hall of Fame, rounded second one day, felt his hammy go, went down like he'd been shot*, and was wasted money the rest of his career. The suggestion wasn't that this is happening, only that it could be. Besides, I don't remember reading anything beyond somebody's similarly wild speculation that steroids caused muscle injuries, and you didn't hear that from my typing fingers, so I'm not sure why you're suggesting that the existence of a contrary perspective weakens my argument. ="Edgy DC":1vgavtwu]And what's being implied? Niese has spent pretty much his whole career in the aggressive testing era.[/quote:1vgavtwu] None of that is remotely being implied. I'm saying that steroids can be used regularly or in order to ameliorate injury symptoms on an as-needed basis (or both, of course). And I am not saying anything about any specific player; I'm saying if, as it seems, there are significantly more injuries lasting for a longer time this season, is it possible that the decline in the as-needed application of certain steroids may be part of the reason? ="Edgy DC":1vgavtwu]Some of these things we're too close to. Was that all roids or lack of roids?[/quote:1vgavtwu] I have no idea what role, if any, steroids played in these are any other specific injuries. Nothing in my argument is meant to imply that I do. Injuries have always happened; that hasn't changed. What has changed is how teams and players treat them. When there is a significant increase in the frequency and severity of muscle injuries coinciding with a league crackdown on commonly used substances known to have a restorative effect on muscle tissue, it raises the possibility. Nonetheless, I wouldn't be shocked to find out that there is no correlation whatsoever. ="Edgy DC":1vgavtwu]The body is a fragile and mysterious thing and athletes ask a lot of theirs. It also includes plenty of similarly wild-assed speculation about why, including the theory about steroids causing injuries that you referenced earlier. Same trainer maybe but the training staff is minus this guy, Jeff Cavaliere: And he's the one who developed this Now I'm not going to go as far as saying that Cavaliere's absence is the reason for the plethora of leg injuries, but I think it merits some discussion. Oh, and while Cavaliere no longer works for the Mets, he continues to be employed privately by David Wright. Wright, it can be noted, has had no leg issues this year. Edgy DC Aug 06 2009 11:29 AM Wright, it can be noted, joins Reed, Tatis, and Murphy as the only guys to stay standing all year. Murphy strained his hammy at the end of 2008. 22. Plus there's the whole "he's only 25" thing. Hell, guys get hurt; it happens. But he's still getting BETTER. Shut him down and get him ready for 2010. Moving him is asinine, especially considering that you get shit for him coming off an injury. If the Mets trade him in the offseason, then he comes back and has a typical year next year for the Brewers or whoever, then you're the first one bitching about why we traded this guy and complaining why David Fucking Eckstein is our shortstop.
