  1. While waiting out the Dinos-Lions Opening Day rain delay, I'm watching KBO highlights right now, trying to pick a yagu squadron to root for-- I'm currently ping-ponging between the NC Dinos (two dancing dinosaurs), SK Wyverns (it's a DRAGON!)-- and let me tell you: bat-flip fans, you are in for a treat. (Old-Timey-Minded Folk /Fun Police... you may want to go back to Mets Classic and/or binging "Ozark.") *Yes, Chris Flexen is a Doosan Bear, but, personally, I can't be front-running. Some help with picking your rooting interest: https://www.pitcherlist.com/so-you-want-to-get-into-the-kbo/PitcherList guide to the league https://ftw.usatoday.com/2020/05/kbo-espn-baseball-finally-thank-godUSA Today quickie guide (including some fun mascot video) Get to know the KBO: a useful Twitter thread from the proprietor of MyKBO.net, with some fun facts At a glance: https://twitter.com/BaseballBrit/status/1252568831823876096Team locations https://twitter.com/BaseballBrit/status/1252568833547735040Team colors guide https://twitter.com/BaseballBrit/status/1252568840183205888/photo/1Foreign players on each roster
  2. It's on! It's on! It's on... a rain delay! But, hey, Karl Ravech and Eduardo Perez at home, looking vaguely disoriented!
  3. "Gilmartin likes to play around with the deceptively slow ones. He also enjoys throwing off-speed baseball pitches."
  4. Too much wear-and-tear to the sack. Karaoke is the only real solution, here. BEST RIHANNA-SONG UP, GUYS.
  5. I mean, it's somewhat immaterial what shape the playoffs take. Anything happening this year is going to have a wartime-style asterisk hanging over it in the record book, anyway.
  6. Why are we having this discussion? Next.
  7. Gots to be Ol' Field Helmet, no?
  8. Isn't having an owner who's overly-concerned with public image (but, simultaneously, frightfully inept at the management thereof) kind of a familiar problem for us?
  9. I can play bassoon, which means I can theoretically play bari sax. Theoretically.
  10. Sonic tonic, t'is
  11. At this difficult time, it's important to remember to make sure that nobody gets an extra year of service time who absolutely, positively hasn't earned it. [bLOCKQUOTE]Gov. Cuomo said on news tonight he spoke with Jeff Wilpon. Cuomo advocated MLB season take place with no one in stands because it would be good for country to watch. Cuomo said response was that it would require a reduction in player salaries to offset lack of attendance.[/bLOCKQUOTE] While I'm certain other owners are going to raise similar concerns... it's comforting to know that some people-- even in the face of previously-unimaginable crisis-- remain so fucking on-brand. (From his brother's show on CNN. About right, judging from the clip I heard.)

    Firsts

FIRST LIKE: Gooden. He was up on the side of a building, with superhumanly-long arms and crazy command of Lord Charles. He was magic, and served like my gateway drug from superheroes like Batman and Spider-Man to big-ass sports dudes on the sides of buildings. Also, Steve Balboni, because he was meaty, and looked like the deli guy at our Gristedes. FIRST DISLIKE: Tudor or Andujar. Tudor and his pinched face. Andujar and... all THAT.

He was really only fully healthy-- and at full defensive capability-- for three years with us. Ordonez had more than just the one great year. He had 1999 PLUS about four other very good seasons by dWAR/runs saved/error count/whatever metrics you favor. I LOVE Keith-- I've never owned an action figure of any other player-- but there's no way he's worth more than a middle-infielder of Rey's caliber (consistency issues inclusive).
  14. Al Kaline taught me the value of the base on balls. Strat-o-Matic, 1971 set. By the time I was in Junior High,, the walks column would be the first place my eyes went when I scanned the back of some hitter's baseball card. Here's this Posnanski piece on Al Kaline I read last week: https://theathletic.com/1568128/2020/02/05/the-baseball-100-no-51-al-kaline/https://theathletic.com/1568128/2020/02/05/the-baseball-100-no-51-al-kaline/ Who better to teach you the value of a base than Al Kaline?
  15. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I imagine Kent is exactly like the guy we saw on SURVIVOR. He was extremely confident in himself and openly manipulative but didn't seem to be capable of fully processing how other people would interpret those qualities, so in his own mind, he was just doing the right thing. I actually think that's how most athletes have to be but could see even in a room full of them Kent's singlemindedness might rub them the wrong way, and easy to imagine the conflict he'd have with Bonds and his massive but fragile ego. I can't remember specifically why why fans see him as a dick. He was actually a pretty decent player and obviously had a long runway of getting better ahead of him when we tossed him overboard. But I wasn't paying rapt attention to the Mets in the Jeff Kent Era. JCL/LWFS Similarity Score: 97% Honestly, he just seems to me like someone who doesn't get or like interacting with people with whom he isn't 100 percent alike (which came first, it's impossible to say).
  16. I mean... without Paul, Carter's up there in the bottom of the 10th trying to fist a 2-1 pitch into left with, y'know, air.

  20. If you're going to lose him for a season, this is the season to lose him. Basically, if they play at all, they're playing 1/2-2/3 of a season. So, practically speaking, you've got 20 starts-- plus whatever else these guys lose to bumps and scratches-- to cobble together. Also, Wacha and Lugo and Gsellman. Also also, David Peterson?
  21. Beato?
  22. Vic Sage wrote: just saw it. They could've stopped with 3 and i'd be fine. They really, really, REALLY could have.
  23. 3 is Kirk?
  24. At the third base slot: down goes Frazier?
  25. Hey, he's saving arm wear and stupid practice time now!
